Ok, i'll have to admit, it's never been done to me, as rope is a hard limit of mine.  So, i have to ask... please...what's the point?
 
Why spend hours upon hours tying a girl/boy up and at the end...not have access to them?
 
Is it purely for beauty's sake?
 
i can understand the submissive being comforted within the bonds, so perhaps that is it.
 
i'm not judging.  i'm just curious.  i'll be interested to see your input.

I enjoy the act, the time it take's to tie her up can be quite relaxing.
I enjoy how she looks, usually naked, but with ropes, in a design i created accenting her body, bringing and showing her nicer points
I enjoy that she can wear clothing over a lot of Japanesse rope configurations so we can wander around in public with her tied.
And i just enjoy tieing her up :D

I love being perfectly still while he ropes me up.  I feel like a toy, being played with by him.  The process is very comforting, and makes me feel my submission quite deeply.  Typically he does breast bondage - tightly.  He likes the look, the swelling, the purpling, and how tender they become....and then he torments them...

Actually, rope bondage doesn't take as long as you seem to think. I can tie a rope ladder fairly quickly and do a full rope dress in less than 20 minutes. It's all about practice. I do it for a variety of reasons, one of which is the beauty of the art itself, but also because you can tie in such a way as to create tension in any number of delicious spots and it's no hardship to leave uncovered those spots you wish to have remain uncovered.

In addition, I adore being 'in' such bondage myself. It can be very relaxing. The rope itself is your anchor, so you don't have to keep your own weight supported. I especially like working with flat rope in 75' increments but depending on which body parts I'm tying, anything from 25' to 150' is doable with minimum effort. Once the subject is in bondage, a host of evil toys can be brought to bear on exposed flesh. Granted, floggers are not my toy of choice because the fall can get tangled, but it's perfect for crops, canes, single tails and the like.

If you know what you are doing and you care, you can still have all the access you want, even for intercourse.  I love bondage for a host of reasons, I love the analness of Japanese bondage, getting it all pretty and perfect.  I love the look of having someone bound like a gift.  I am a very sensual person, despite having tons of toys, I often do entire scenes using only my body as a toy.  Rope feels like an extension of my hand and fingers sliding slowly over and across someones body.  the rope is like my arms wrapping around my partner, the ends are like my hands and I am always conscious of where they are as they slither over a woman's body.  I whip the ends so they are soft and beautiful and tease, tickle, and tantalize with them.  I can be soft and gentle or I can pull and tug so they bite and hurt.  It is in many ways like making love.

Since there are those for whom rope and bondage IS hot, I get to set them flying with the pleasure of the rope, the eroticism they find in the bondage, and my reaction to them and their reaction to me and it is hot, very hot.

Japanese rope bondage is something I am going to be looking into further once I'm settled.  I am an avid photographer and the aesthetics of it all are just wonderful both for enjoying the work of art created as it is and also creating more wonderful art through my lens. It doesn't always have to be about sex you know [:)]

I love it and I've attended sessions and have had several lessons when I've been in Japan and attended a photo shoot there. I adore it, mainly for the aesthetics and I find it enormously calming and contemplative. The Japanese can turn just about anything into an artform and that is how I view it. It's wonderful when you have a subject that also loses herself in it too, it just adds to the whole experience.

Rope bondage is fabulously aesthetically pleasing for a start. It is all encompasing, as the bits around your waist/breasts don't really restrain you, but you can feel them there anyway...

Why is rope a hard limit?

I.love.it.  It's part of a ritual for us.  He binds me in the ropes, I cover up and we go to dinner.  He knows I am constricted and he knows how much I enjoy it.  The ropes are pretty (the designs and diamonds) and also, an important thing (for me, anyway), when they are undone, they leave marks (indentations) on the skin.  And like Crappy says, you can be tightly bound and still have access.  It's all good.  [;)]

The act of the tying IS the scene for me.  It's using your skill and your hands to directly connect and bind someone into your bonds.  It can be a slow long sensuous process, feeling the rope slither, slide, burn, tighten, and take the submissive away from the normal world and into the bound world. 

It's like anything- some people really get into it and some people don't.  As Bita said- it doesn't HAVE to take a long time, depending on what you're going for.

Not all scenes are about having access to their sex parts or their physical body.

Rope is a hard limit for me because of the emotional connotation i associate with it.  i had a very bad experience a while back with rope.  i'm not comfortable discussing it publically.  But let's just say... it's not a place i need to be in durring a scene.

It is the art and finesse of the practie that I admire.  I know a bit, have participated
in both observering and learning.  One aspect that is very intersting is that the
Scene can become very meditative, because of the time involved and level of
concentration, both for the subject and the artist.
 
Midori's book on Japanese bondage has exquisite photographs and
detailed instructions, and is highly recommended by Shibari practicioners. 
You can find it in many major bookstores and also Online.

Besides the beauty of the art,and the erotic implications; the ropes can also be tied,so as to translate any motion of the body to sexual hot buttons..I.e. clitoris etc.
just the rolling of a shoulder,can bring delightful sensations to bear,elsewhere.

Because it puts the sub into a wonderful headspace? Some women (and men) respond just amazingly to rope. I am the resident nawashi at our local club here and get to tie at least four or five people at every party. One, in particular, was flying so high in subspace that I was worried how I'd get her back down to earth. In the end, it took two days of intensive aftercare.

Who says you don't have access to them? Some ties are great for access, others aren't.

And I could give the question back: why spend hours upon hours flogging somebody into subspace if you can just spend twenty minutes tying her up and getting the same result?

Really, it's very individual. Rope can be like a hug. It can expose the person for sex. It can protect the person, cocoon her. It can be calming. Or it can be exhilerating. Or threatening. Or even therapeutic.

Some people do it for the beauty. Some people do it to show off.
