Congress quietly prepares to renew Patriot A Tags: Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) has introduced a little-noticed bill that intends to once again renew controversial provisions of the Bush administration's USA Patriot Act that are due to expire this year. When the act was first signed into law, Congress put in some "sunset" provisions to quiet the concerns of civil libertarians, but they were ignored by successive extensions. Unfortunately, those concerns proved to be well founded, and a 2008 Justice Department report confirmed that the FBI regularly abused their ability to obtain personal records of Americans without a warrant.

lolol

Candidate Obama said in 2007 that if he were elected president there would be "no more National Security Letters [NSL's] to spy on citizens who are not suspected of a crime" because "that is not who we are, and it is not what is necessary to defeat the terrorists."

Much like Obama's vow to close the Guantanamo Bay military prison, the use of NSL's has also continued. Most recently, Obama's Department of Justice sent an NSL to micro-blogging site Twitter, seeking information on all 635,561 users who followed secrets outlet WikiLeaks -- a list that included Raw Story.

I don't begrudge a President that couple hundred grand a year. Know why ?

Because winning the election is like a sentence to a POW camp. SIGN ZE PAPERS OR FACE ZE CONSEQUENCES.

I wish people would realize that and it would quell some of this ridiculous partisamship. The President has but one power that matters and it is not publicised much when it is used, the power of executive order.

However now this is a bill. Without risking life and limb Obama can refuse to sign it. This would actually fulfill one campaign "promise". Let's see what happens. I doubt they would assassinate him for that.

And quit kidding yourself. Who do you think talked JFK into riding down the street in a convertible in Texas years ago ? Come on, those SS Men who surround him are loyal to him, without any prejudice (meant in the correct way) or any external influence ? This after meeting him last week ? Gimme a break. If I were President I would have people I KNOW I can trust between me and the secret service. And we would all be packing Sig Sauers at least.

That quippy "Yes we can't" is not a joke, nor is it funny. I was disappointed in Obama after he had the chair for a bit. I was expecting a bit more backbone. I was expecting required modifications to the health care bill, to allow options. I was expecting too much. Do I think he lied ? Maybe a bit. But like Ron Paul in his new post, he learned about all the things he simply can't do.

Will he sign the extension ? I think he shouldn't but I think he will.
