I'm going back to bed.

License plates on bikes is nothing new. This was common when I was a kid. Typically administered by communities (not states), the practice stopped when it was deemed to be too costly (producing the plates). Since then many still have registration for bikes and issue a 'license sticker' for the bike. The sticker cannot be removed without destroying it. In addition to the sticker, the serial number, make, and model of the bike is also recorded.

Certainly.  And we cant have people just riding when they do not have an operator license.

KenDckey -> RE: Politician Wants License Plates -- For Bikes (1/14/2011 7:04:17 AM)

When I was a kid, the fire dept gave us riding lessons, engraved the license number on the sproket, frame and rims and then gave us the metal plate   Dad paid so I don't remember how much if anything it was.

I still have the plate

Regulation, regulation, regulation, curtail everyone's freedom, let authority take complete control and probably charge you for the privilige.

But having said that, there are many bikes on the road which are unsafe, some are even sold that way, the 'style' bikes, immitations of the real thing made up of gas pipe and coke cans. Perhaps if a bike is to be used on the road, it should be roadworthy, but who is to stop the unroadworthy bikes using the roads? So maybe a reasonable idea in essence, but unenforcable and when something can't be enforced, why bother, just take your life in your hands like everyone else does whether they be in a 'safe' vehicle or not.

the whole thing thou is what real threat do the unsafe bikes pose to any one other then the idiot stupid enough to take it on the road?

Unsafe car use can kill untold number of people(like the santamonica farmers market)
But I've never heard of a piece of shit "show bike" doing little more then injuring the idiot riding it or bending a fence post

speaking of shitty bikes, Last campaign I was on, I bought a lil "dui" special from walmart to keep myself physically active
it was a panama joe beach cruiser that had a bottle opener built into the front fork(so of course I had to buy it), but the freeking chain broke in less then five miles of riding it.....fucking Chinese made crap

Why not put tags on every pair of shoes. Later we could upgrade to a bar code on the back of our heels. Think of the money we could raise!

If "Boyle says the enforcement will be almost impossible. He believes it would also be a drain on police resources and a financial burden to some.", then it would be a great opportunity to hire more police officers! City governments love doing that. State governments love it even more, and that's about all the Federal government does anyway. It sounds like a win/win/win.

Ever get stuck behind a bicyclist on a curvy scenic road? You want a place on the public streets and country highways, you pay for the privilege like the rest of us. Make 'em buy insurance too.

I think the inherent risk of life and limb is price enough, you know how many bicyclist get killed every year doing that?

TheHeretic -> RE: Politician Wants License Plates -- For Bikes (1/14/2011 10:28:32 PM)

Probably about as many as drivers who have to live with the nightmares of killing them, and nowhere near as many as drivers who damn near have a heart attack at the stunts some of these suicidal fucks pull.

Aneirin -> RE: Politician Wants License Plates -- For Bikes (1/15/2011 12:59:46 AM)

The bicycle is the most efficient human powered vehicle and when oil finally becomes too expensive for the average person to buy, this might very well be viable transport

For the bigger family childhood obesity might take a dive though.

For the single person and with weather protection

The off roader

The Domme

The shopper

But maybe the true future I suspect will be moving towards hybrid solar/electric assisted hpv.

Burn fat not fuel, a healthier population and an end to this sucking the insides of the planet out and it's inevitable often well hidden problems, but not always, Deepwater Horizon for example and I do wonder what all this sucking the insides out of the planet is actually doing. But perhaps the gift of oil was for us to learn and accelerate the technologies to learn something better for our future, for what are we going to do when all the oil has gone.

It's coming, and coming fast, the petrochemical age will dribble to a stand still, isn't it better to be ready for that, or are we going to stick our heads in the sand and think about it another day.

allthatjaz -> RE: Politician Wants License Plates -- For Bikes (1/15/2011 6:50:00 AM)

I cycle all the time and it costs me nothing more than a drop of oil and a puncture repair kit. Fortunately where I am, we have loads of cycle paths and when I do have to go on the road most cars and especially trucks drivers are very considerate. Occasionally I get the odd prick like TH who hold a deep resentment towards us healthy nonpolluting cyclists and you just have to shake your head as they pull out without seeing you, try to overtake you on a blind spot or pull over nearer the curb in slow going traffic so you can't get past.
I have no qualms about banging on the car roofs of thoughtless and inconsiderate drivers.

Would I pay for plates? Absolutely not. We should be encouraging cyclists and not trying to deter them.
