hunky, if you eat pre-packaged foods, you eat insects every day of the year.

Are you referring to the red dye made from crushed beetles?

No, I'm talking about allowable insect material in foodstuffs per the FDA.

A commercial food processor is allowed certain "filth limits' this includes, but is not limited to 'rodent hairs, roach droppings and bug parts."

Think about that next time you have a microwave burrito [8D]

pahunkboy -> RE: Replacing Cattle With Edible Insects? physorg.com — Insects produce much smaller quantities of gre (1/12/2011 5:37:48 PM)

We could throw in rat hairs and droppings...

a certain amount of that is allowed in the food.

I think the muslims would have a problem with that as well. The halal diet's pretty much kosher stuff as well, isn't it? They're just a lot messier slaughtering the beef...

I didn't know there was any messiness.  Halal and kosher requirements are identical AFAIK.  Although I suppose you'd need an imam to bless halal instead of a rabbi.

Err one word - SHELLFISH, Muslims are allowed to eat prawns, Jews not so much

Surely it's the same thing but at a different scale?

Imagine if a cow had as many legs as a millipede. Would look strange a cow with many legs walking towards you in a field.

Millipede, yum.

Hmmm. Once they start splicing animals for specific purposes that might not be a bad idea. That's a lot of extra beef.

It says "replace" cattle with insects.   REPLACE.     What do you think that means?

Somehow, future westerns won't have quite the same feel to them.

I really don't get why people have a bug-eating taboo.  It's utterly irrational.  Edible insects are gourmet fare, truly excellent in taste and texture when properly prepared.  They are also nutritious and healthy.  What's not to like about them?  I've enjoyed almost every entomophagous preparation I've ever sampled, and some have been impressively yummy.

Rational minds eat bugs, and like them, too.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Replacing Cattle With Edible Insects? physorg.com — Insects produce much smaller quantities of (1/12/2011 7:58:06 PM)

I've had bugs that were meant to eat, There's a candy shop in Pismo beach right on the beach that sells candy withb ugs in them, I had chocolate covered ants and I've had ranch flavored meal worms, and I even ate part of the eye out of a grasshopper that was in my lollypop. It's kind of a gross concept for some I know, but the 3 bug foods I had,  are not all that gross if you don't stop and think ewww oh my god, it's an ant in there, or ewww oh my god hell no, that's a meal worm.

It's not a matter of the animals we use for food that are the problem. Its us...People...there are too many of us. We are a species that is similar to a virus in how our life cycle is. This is particularly true since the discovery of oil as a fuel, fertilizer, chemical component etc. Historically before that time, people were balanced out in a sustainable level for the planet, both climatically and productively. Since that time, our population as a species has exploded and is only possible by the artificial use of oil based products. As that resource becomes scarce, you'll see the population decline untill another resource is a replacement or we learn how to live within our planetary means....

Oh wait..that would mean we would actually have to do meaningful work to live..not meaningless work to survive...my bad.

Its a good thing I really dont give a rats ass what anyone else says. I live off the grid as much as possible and frankly feel pretty good about it.

I agree. Now in a dictatorship, aided by a progressive religion, strict reproductive measures would easily rectify the overpopulation, but unfortunately religions have been destroyed during the past centuries and simultaneously democracies have been established. The people who have been responsible for both, in my opinion have very much goofed.

I don't know what kind of work you'd but I don't consider what I do meaningless. I have about 700 miles to drive to get to a walmart in ky. Goods have to flow to keep things running. You can go back to the pre-industrial way of doing this but that come with the nightmares they had to deal with back then too. Hard work is only meaningless if you think it is.

I have some fairly radical thought processes on many things from society to religeon and so on. I'll be happy to discuss them but I assure you they dont mean going back to the 18th century.

Suffice it to say, I believe we as a species have been poor custodians of what we are blessed with, that being intelligence and conscience. I believe if we really wanted to we could change and move beyond the yoke of oil. It would take a massive effort from every nation..and its hard enough to get a group of 5 people to agree on a place for lunch.

Be well

I thought chocolate had quite a generous quota for mashed bug parts as well?

We have done some thing right and some we could have done better. People have their own minds.

An alternative will be found when one is needed. Needed not just wanted.

LOL.  You are a riot.

With all those gourmet bugs- steak houses will be closing left and right.
