Just interested in your opinions really...

Most of the internet makes a financial loss, doesn't it?

On-line newspapers can't be making much, if anything. Even Murdoch's offering behind his pay-wall is bleeding cash.

YouTube has to be a loser.

Twitter - God only knows. I don't think so, though.

Facebook is keeping quiet, but I'm not convinced. If it's just breaking even it would be the only social network to do so, surely?

And then there's all the little businesses out there, trying to chase a profit on-line.

It looks like there's a huge amount of money invested in the Net, but is any of it making money? And if it is, how secure is that revenue, given that most of it seems to rely on advertising?

Youtube   Doesn't look like it's profitable yet.

Facebook  Oh yeh...and the amount is growing.

I don't know about the others.

Lets see, Google turned small profit, a few billion or so. Yea....there is money in the Internet if you know how to get it.

Send me $20 and I'll tell who's making money on the internet.

My company only made a billion last year.  We had better be careful.

Google, Amazon, eBay, Facebook are all making money, I believe. I'd guess that Netflix is, too.

Amazon is one of the few companies that thrived during the dot-com boom that transitioned to actually making money.

Lotsa porn sites are doing well too.

Y'know ... that didn't even occur to me when I responded.  Yeah. The porn sites tend to turn a profit.

Those kinds of businesses are only one facet of the internet.  They do, however, help make the internet what it is and available to everyone.

Do we make our money on the internet?  No.  But our business would be pretty much non-existent without the internet.  With it, we do a decent six figure annual income.

I make my living off the internet. :) There is money to be made - lots of it!

Way I see it is this : If you got an idea that will be a hit on the net, go with it. You must think of long term goals, not short. Right now it is still advancing, the internet multimedia is already displayed on common TVs, in speakers in other rooms (to say the least)

Imagine the computer of the future. An octocore processor with 64GB of RAM. Four ten terabyte drives in a RAID striped and miirored configuration, and the OS booting off a totally separate drive which is switched off. The ultimate protection. In the RAID array there are no boot sectors, no registries, and this machine sends every signal to every system in the house, simulateously.. Remote controllable from many ports at the same time. All your cable TV and all that, everything goes through there. And not through AV cables, through the network in your house.

Now think beyond. Right now integrating the whole system can be pricey. Even my basic system would cost out the gazoob. However in the future, this technology will trickle down, just as the tecnology did inside of every thing you own. Affordable means cheaper, and it will become cheaper.

It exists now, it's just a matter of time until Marconi's idea becomes obsolete.

If you got anything that can stay afloat, float it. The "time" is coming, get your foot in the door.

the new porno mobile, actually vibrates and moans when driven. With the new cardswipe ignition, it charges you per minute to view the hot nasty action projected from the steering wheel, or to drive.

I think the jury has to be out on Facebook. In October of 2010, Zuckerberg was still talking about break-even...

quote:

Facebook is focused on gaining users and improving the experience for existing users, so any extra cash is just reinvested in the product, he said. That’s why the company is still run at “around” break-even level.

There's a huge difference between revenue and profit.

Most of the reports I have read suggests it might have gone into the black in September 2010, but the low level of real income, given the size of the business is only really good for cash flow. This theory is supported by the recent agreement to receive an investment of $500m from Goldman Sachs. There may be no sensible profit there, although obviously some investors believe there will be. I'd be anxious that Facebook might never do much more than break even.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Is anyone making any money on the internet? (1/4/2011 3:20:25 AM)

You know there are countless online shops out there, some even without an actual physical shop anywhere, they all make money and most of them make more profit than in a physical shop somewhere, because on the net more people see it (you are having a nationwide audience instead of just the local one), not just local people, advertising is still cheaper than sending out catalogs, you're not paying rent for a shop or a shop assistant, you just need storage...

Hosting business make quite a bit of money, especially specialized hosting.

People wouldn't advertise on the net if it wouldn't bring them money... It's not the dot boom, but think about how much more people purchase on the internet? So yes, plenty of money to be made there...

They don't all make money, in the same way as not all bricks and mortar businesses make money. Those countless on-line stores could be made up of many thousands of money-pits which will come and go within a few years (as long as it takes for their owners to wise up or lose everything), with just a very small minority scratching a living. How would we know?

I'm not sure how true this is. I know of any number of businesses which have a web presence costing them a fair amount of money and they get little back in return. Why do they persevere? I think partly it's because of the perception that if you don't have a web presence, then you don't exist. It's a false perception, but it doesn't stop people throwing money at their rubbish web sites. I suspect the same may be true of web advertising. I'm not convinced that business people are as rational as you suggest. They could be wasting money advertising on the net, but they might feel compelled to continue because 'everyone else is doing it'. In this sense, it is possibly a bubble we are looking at. I don't really know. I'm not convinced anyone does for sure.

anniezz338 -> RE: Is anyone making any money on the internet? (1/4/2011 4:25:44 AM)

I had a couple of free porn sites (content purchased) about 10 years ago.....had to close them down as work and school took all my time. But I had them paying my mortgage and lights after about 4-5 months. The good ole days :) I had a blast with it.

So, I purchased about 5 websites and a pretty good software for making pages a couple of months ago. Advertising and content, especially streaming video content, is much more expensive now. There are also lots of webmaster forums with some very helpful people on them. I wouldn't mind getting on the content selling side of it.

So yes, I believe there is money to be made. Now if I can get to it, as some other small investments are eating up alot of my time.....lol.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Is anyone making any money on the internet? (1/4/2011 4:29:39 AM)

If most of the shops wouldn't make money, people wouldn't do them, nobody runs a business to lose money, however the hosting costs...

Most businesses keep an eye on what they spend and their ROI, I don't know about you, but a lot of things I buy online and get them delivered on my doorstep, so do others, so somebody earns money.

That's another key point. Time. If you are using your time to maintain a site, then it needs to be costed in. I am convinced most small sites, if one took account of the time spent maintaining them, would be making a proper loss. I think there may be a lot of sites only stay up because their owner is taking $10 an hour, and working like crazy to keep it all going.
