I didn't say that, just that you have a tendency to pick up links from papers that are aimed at a certain part of society, I'm trying to phrase it kindly - you seem to have an affinity for those papers that are aimed at that part of society that isn't overburdened by high IQs or education...

I wouldn't call all US papers pretty dismal just because you have pearls like the National Enquirer....

The term tabloid means something to you? And not all papers are tabloids or write tabloid style, you just seem to pick them....

This whole episode reminds me of Heathrow airport fiasco.  It was such a blunder that New York thinks it can imitate it.

1. Records began in 1659.  So it might be the coldest in 450 years, but speculating about what the winters were like before 1659 is ridiculous.
2. It's already warmer than 1683/1684.
3. Winter officially began on December 21.  So we've had nine freaking days of it, and making projections on the whole season from nine days is preposterous.

Yes, and so were all the European airports that were closed down due to unforeseen heavy snow fall, you should blame them all for not having those nifty machines that influence the weather, I'm sure I've seen them recently - I remember now, it was a rerun of Star Trek, even Mr Spock found it fascinating.

...meanwhile the govr of NJ went to Disneyland...and refused to come back early to deal with the snow!

Mayor Bloomberg- the biggest snob in recent memory-  ....  dropped the ball- but maybe not- as there is rumor the union did a work slow down- -  BTW- there are STILL passengers who have not got home from Christmas and wont until after the New Year!

Lack of efficiency is the new normal!

Status: offline 		I have been having a Cold Winter here, So far temperatures have been as low as minus 16 where i live
in North Yorkshire, Uk.
I have had frozen and burst pipes, Lack of heating as the lpg companies not been able to get through,
snowed in for 3 weeks, and just as its nicely thawing and warming up, i think there is a lot more winter
to come yet. It is no doubt the coldest winter i have ever seen, I think the winters over the last 3 years
have been getting worse.
I would like to see a nice summer to compensate for the winters, but doubt that will happen.

Status: offline 		Riesa, same here, and the house is actually quite heating efficient though the boiler is in the garage which is not so well insulated... One of the outside pipes froze and I don't know how it happened, boiler died, just spent a few K for a new boiler and pipe repair (oh well, it's also bigger than the old one, plenty of hot baths for me) and in spring I am going to work over the garage... Don't want another boiler

Status: offline 		My Pipes were all inside, Fortunately for me, each of the 3 times I had leaks, i was at home, so
not too much damage was done, and Partner being a plumber, i am still waiting for Carpets to dry out,
Repairs taken care of, and end stops fitted to a couple of pipes til the weather warms up, so no further damage can be done.
on the news tonight, it was saying its been 100 years since we had such cold temperatures.
My home is badly insulated, and my pipes are in the eaves, also run along side the external walls, which didnt help,
Now everytime the temperature drops too cold now, i turn on an oil filled radiator, to help keep that
stretch warm enough. Hopefully we wont see such dramatic temperatures for a while yet.

There is a small pipe for the overflow of the boiler (I think if there is too much pressure on it or so) that sticks out a little bit and then goes into the the drain, that froze. It's an old mews house and they couldn't change too much due to it being a listed or graded building (still don't understand quite how it works, like a house of a certain age and type, you can't change a lot because it's historic) so I assume the previous owners had it like that and since there never really was such a harsh winter, it froze. You know the UK isn't used to lots of snow and freezing, hardly ever happens.

Back-to-back houses are a form of terraced house in which two houses share a rear wall (or in which the rear wall of a house directly abuts a factory or other building).. Of low quality (with only two rooms, one on each floor) and high density, they were built for working class people and because three of the four walls of the house were shared with other buildings and therefore contained no doors or windows, back-to-back houses were notoriously ill-lit and poorly ventilated and sanitation was of a poor standard. Many back to backs that escaped the Blitz of World War II still remained standing until the mid 1960’s Everything was outside: ‘pig bins’ (for waste food collected to feed pigs), dustbins and toilets. The toilet was the only part of the system that needed water directly as there was usually on tap of water in the middle of a shared yard. Thus most pipes, which were first of all lead and then copper, were on the outside of the properties.

Actually not a back to back house, but an old mews house, changing anything requires a ton of permissions, I assume that is why they didn't do much with the piping and still had that little copper pipe sticking out where it then joins the drainage, quite a few of the graded buildings here have those features and they're not small houses, simply from another time where apparently the winters were a lot milder. Usually the houses are actually great because they have thick stone walls (most of the more modern ones are often only single brick) but changing the windows or anything like that is a major expense because you can't just have modern windows, they have to be wood, the same shape, etc. So you end up paying a lot for a joiner and the person putting the glass in - I guess you can tell we had double glazing done...
