I was comparing the methods being advocated by Ken for use on our borders, such as planting mines and setting up machine gun towers, to the methods used by East Germany. Is that really what you want this country to become Popeye? A walled, fenced fortress where we have no problem maiming or killing those who dare cross our borders without authorization?

Rule, allowing illegal aliens to remain in this country would be like letting car theives keep the cars they stole. And as far as our borders go the only people ever killed or maimed by minefields are the ones dumb enough to walk into them. We've been using them in S. Korea for 60 years now and they're extremely effective at keeping people out! What we're doing now certainly isn't working is it? As for what I'd like to see this country become, I'd like to see us become a country of laws again that enforces our laws. And that means federal prison sentences for crooked bankers and deportation for illegal aliens. Deportation should be swift and it should be certain. Since when did enforcing our laws especially our immigration laws become "optional?"

Sealing the borders won't give you a job. Jobs are not a fixed number, they are a product of demand and productivity. Immigration drives both. Attitudes like yours have been commonplace in the US since it was founded, but thank God they have not determined our policies.

First the post didnt say a "Republican minority", which would have been correct, and second Republican minority is not even close to the same as a minority of Republicans. If are 99 Republicans in the Senate 49 would be a minority of Republicans, and if there were 3, then 1 would be a minority of Republicans. English 101.

If we have any "shortages" in manual labor jobs why not import in Chineese labor for a four or six month period and then when the job is done they go home. And they can't bring their families, pregnant wives or their 350 cousins with them. CB, I grew up in the 1950's and 60's. We never had any problems being productive in those days in this country. And the only immigrants I saw were a few Irish and Italian immigrants who came here legally. And there was no "mantra"! And the ones who were here illegally got ratted out by their own and the INS would show up at their workplace and scoop them. A hundred years ago we needed immigration. Now with 300 million plus population we simply don't anymore. Surely you've noticed that most of the factories are gone from this country now. Yes, we need "some" immigration but not millions of lawn jockeys and pickers. We need highly skilled immigrants like Nurses, M.D.s, Engineers. Immigrants who won't be getting on our public systems and filling up our schools with their kids. We simply can't afford to be running a luxury flophouse for the third and fourth world countries. Immigrants are far more productive and innovative? And just how do they do that with a fourth grade education? Most of them aren't even literate in their own languages. How can you expect them to read blueprints in English? And the immigration of the last twenty years has definately hurt the U.S. Try to get into an emergency room in any big city. Look at the exploding crime rates. Look at all the Haitians that Bill Clinton let in. They live in the "Pork and Beans" section of Miami. Not very many "engineers" or Nurses there! But the crime rate is sky high! Every once in a while on those police shows they have something about it. No problem getting all the cocaine you want though.

Surprisingly enough, there are enough nurses who hold licenses to take care of the shortage. What we dont have is enough nurses practicing. Why arent they practicing? We dont have that much time... or bandwidth.

That means they were on soil. They get to stay. My point is that Cubans get special treatment in immigration. NO other group on the planet gets it. Can you imagine what would happen if we told Mexicans "hey, if you can get to this side of the Rio Grande and step on American soil, you're LEGAL" (kinda like the old amnesty program) During the 80's when a lot of Cubans and Hatians were rafting over to S FL, the coast guard was picking them up and the Hatians went back and the Cubans were brought in to miami. Wanna know why? TONS of money that the CANF fed to Jesse Helms.

The decision to embrace political action from the pulpit is part of a broader effort by the Roman Catholic Church and other faith groups that support President Obama’s call for new immigration laws. It includes advertising and phone calls directed at 60 Catholic Republican lawmakers and “prayerful marches” in Congressional districts where the issue has become a divisive topic. -------------- I wonder if this might make any kind of dent in the moribund House of Representatives..... many of the Republicans there perversely see immigration reform as immoral.....
