So this is the world today's kids are growing up in.  Another reason I don't want kids.  To subject them to this type of idiocy is cruel but, sadly, far too usual.

A South Carolina high school freshman has been expelled from school for possession of a butter knife.

The butter knife apparently can be dangerous. i was told a story by a co-worker just this past weekend, about a father who castrated his teenage daughter's 50+ year old boyfriend with a butter knife. This happened in Germany apparently.

Whether or not it's true, i don't know. If it is, awesome.

tazzygirl -> RE: Beware : Candy Canes can be Weapons (12/22/2010 1:20:57 AM)

He did it with a bread knife, not a butter knife. I googled it because the thought of castrating a man with something so blunt as a butter knife left me puzzled.

Candy canes were banned in my school district because some kid seriously stabbed a kid in the eye with one and that kid was blinded for life because people were fucking around with them....

Either way, it hurt *me* to think about.

LOL... i understand. But a bread knife is typically serated, a butter knife is dull.

Mind linking that story? As hard as i looked, i cannot find it. Sorta sounds like an urban legend, or out of Black Christmas.

If items that will put an eye out need to be banned from school, I think we should start with pens and pencils. I suspect they have a much higher risk for blinding some one.

Just remembering when I was a Jr and SR in HS and I would get in a bit of deer hunting before class. The rifle stayed on the back seat in the parking lot but My dressing folder (knife for field dressing) came in with Me in My pocket. One of the coaches was having a hard time opening a package and asked for a knife. No less than 6 of us offered one up LOL.

I dont see that happening today.

C'mon folks, we all know what's really driving this nonsense.

Shakespeare nailed it: Let's kill all the lawyers.

Do you want to know how far we've come? My grandfather owned a one room rural school house that the family uses as a hunting lodge and get-a-way. The school house was in operation from the 1880's to the 1930's. When I was a child an elderly woman who had taught there in the 1920's visted us and the stories she told would flabergast your typical safety nazi today. Boys were expected to chop wood (students swinging axes, oh my!) after school for the wood burning stove (the girls had to clean). It gets worse. The school house had a gun rack because the kids hoped to shoot something - for the family dinner - walking to and from school. If they were lucky enough to shoot something on the way to school, they were given a few moments before class to pull out their knives and properly gut and skin the kill. Sometimes they'd clean their guns during lunch break.

Not only that but the family pet chicken had its head chopped off and then served for dinner.

What were those boys thinking! Tossing candy canes? Geez...[8|]
Don't they know there are more sadistic things one can do them?

In my HS we had the gunracks in pickups, full gunracks.
No one thought anything of it.
Didn't have to lock the trucks either as no one would have stolen the guns anyways.

Happy Holidays to All

Yeah, have the kids use a lump of coal on the back of a shovel. If it was good enough for Abe Lincoln it's good enough for them.
Whenever I fly I always carry three sharpened pencils with me ala G.Gordon Liddy.

I read later in the thread that it was a bread knife.  It didn't stop me from thinking how truly angry and absolutely focused one would have to be to castrate a man with a butter knife.  It got me a bit giddy and I should be ashamed of myself.  *giggle*

The fact remains that kids can turn ANYTHING into a weapon or a toy.  It is a level of creativity that most seem to lose with age, excepting for certain toymakers among us perhaps.  LOL  An incident here or there of something being used inappropriately leading to outright bans is a road to nowhere.  This is life stuff.  Sometimes it is just plain silly and sometimes it is deeply life altering, but it's just stuff.  Things happen.  People are idiots.  No amount of policymaking is going to change that.  I am more interested in responsibility than rules in most cases.  Responsible parents and teachers teaching students to be responsible and responsible administrators using their own minds instead of using the cop out of "zero tolerance" would solve a lot.  Then again, people wouldn't have anyone to blame.  I knew there was a catch somewhere.
