Serbs' Claim of Kosovo Organ Ring Is Investigated
By DAN BILEFSKY
Published: August 4, 2009

Europe's leading human rights group began an investigation on Monday into Serb allegations that Serbian civilians were abducted in Kosovo during the Kosovo war of 1998-99 and taken to Albania, where their organs were extracted for sale before they were killed.

Evidence suggested... the organisers used safe locations in Kukes on the Kosovo border, Rripe in the Mat region further south, and at Fushe-Kruje near the international airport. The location in Fushe-Kruje was specially built.

"It constituted a state-of-the-art reception centre for the organised crime of organ trafficking. It was styled as a makeshift operating clinic, and it was the site at which some of the captives held by KLA members and affiliates had their kidneys removed against their will," Marty's report said.

Age, sex, state of health and ethnicity, with mostly Serbs targeted, determined the selection.

"Some of these captives are said to have pleaded with their captors to be spared the fate of being 'chopped into pieces'," Mr Marty said, citing source testimonies his team had obtained. "The testimonies on which we based our findings spoke credibly and consistently of a methodology by which all of the captives were killed, usually by a gunshot to the head, before being operated on to remove one or more of their organs."

Two-year inquiry accuses Albanian 'mafia-like' crime network of killing Serb prisoners for their kidneys

It's the stuff of nightmares, really. A single kidney apparently sells for about $20,000. At a guess, a body's worth of parts might fetch $80,000 minimum. A bullet is just a few pence. There are plenty of dying wealthy people out there willing to buy, no questions asked. Capitalism kills. Really, it does.

It seems to me that as long as there is a market, and as long as the items are in demand, then this sort of horror will go on. Is there an answer?

Capitalism my ass. Black markets thrive everywhere. If something people want is illegal, you can count on being able to buy it from somebody.

Good point. It would be great to see this particular market curtailed, though.

I do recall that a few years ago there was a big scandal, some South American countries had crime rings and were harvesting organs from kids living on the street. it was fairly well documented and rather dreadful, I assume that they clamped down on it and it just moved to other, less regulated places. It's still pretty dreadful...

Just because it is illegal doesnt mean it isn't capitalism.

Ugh. How awful!

But you know, I always wondered how rich people, even ones that were criminals or medically not-so-great candidates, got to skip to the front of the transplant list... I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

It isnt capitalism in the proper sense though is it. The Kosovan PM is implicated and he is left leaning, but you cant call this socialism either. All it is is criminality and greed carried out by gangsters, allegedley.

I went for the Capitalism angle because the way I see it, the customers are the product of Capitalism, and organs belonging to someone else and taken for a fraction of their true value are the ultimate consumer product.

But I agree, it is a bit clumsy.

In a PURELY Capitalist society, there is no black marjet. Black markets floourish because of controls on trade. Either something is rationed, regulated or flat out illegal. In a truly Capitalist society, if I am the owher of goods or provider of a service and you have the amount of cash or other goods or services that I am willing to accept in exchange, we have a deal.

Nothing is rationed or regulated and the only rules are those of supply and demand.

Obviously, that doesnt work in the real world.
