Of course I think the "art" is crap, but it's kinda cool thinking of someone dropping a sculpture off on your lawn.

I dunno, after seeing the sculpture, I have to admit that I'd definitely prefer a Henry Moore sculpture being dropped off on my lawn... Anybody who wants to get rid of one, I'll send my address...

i love everything about guerrilla art. i even like it when i deem it "bad" or when i have to question whether it really is defined as "art".

Many guerrilla artists expect the life cycle of their art to be fairly transitory. They put the art out in the world and release their sense of "ownership" of it. The example of selling the parts for scrap metal that you gave would be viewed as just part of it's "process" or "meaning".

P.S. For clarity (ha): i put quotes on those words to convey the idea of vaguely defined concepts, not for tonal emphasis. Those really are finger quotes. :)

Honestly... I dig it.

It's not my style of art but I love it. I love the idea of going "Here you go - art for you. No reason why, it's just something I made and you don't have to thank me or do a gallery show or anything. I just made it to make it and now I want someone to enjoy it!"

While I prefer classical art, I love gorilla art. It's a striking departure from the norms of the art world. It's refreshing without the annoyance of "I... am.... woman... " or "I... am... time... immortal... " performance pieces.

I'm sorry I can't get into the ripping open hundreds of bags of sand in the middle of a crowded street or sitting in a room for hours applying hundreds of layers of make-up as people file past. And yes, before anyone asks, those are documents performance pieces that were in my art history books. But my feet hurt and I don't want to cross the room to look them up.

Guess I'm pretty simple minded, I don't think thats art at all...pretty ugly shit.
If I woke up with that in my front yard, I'd be really pissed and after selling the scrap steel, I'd try to find where to send the bill for repairing my landscaping.
Then I would see if I could sue who ever issued the grant money to that idiot to destry my lawn.
Those "earings" look cheap and Fugly...I would be forgiving if they left a corvett in the driveway...

Agreed....and this was a great example of "transitory art", in my opinion.

To be honest, and in keeping with the holiday season, this reminds me of a piece of ornamental "art" one of my siblings made for my mom while in kindergarten for the christmas tree. It looked like a turd painted blue with a hook, but my mom loved it and it still, to this day, has a place of honor on the tree each year.

The funny thing is that the first thing that pops into my head after reading this is "This is exactly why people make this kind of art - to get people to look beyond the stereotype of 'ugly' ".

What defines art - if it has to be beautiful - is hotly debated. Simply because something is beautiful doesn't make it art - "hotel art" is scorned among the art community as something vapid and pointless, simply hung on a wall to appease a guest but lacking content to cause someone to stop and look.

While it has a gilded frame, this "ugly shit" made the news and made a lot of people stop think about it. Which, in this humble art student's opinion, makes it far more artistic than any mass produced and framed print in a hotel lobby or doctor's office despite the prints being "prettier".

I get that I may not consider the ugly POS posted here to be art, I get that the "artist" has a right to expression, and some may say I ain't educated enough to understand art...blah, blah, blah.
Dumping this kindda crap on someone else lawn with out their permission is just wrong, if I take my van and do doughnuts on my neighbours lawn, can I say I'm an artist and not go to jail?
Hey I'm just expressing myself and making people talk.
I think my biggest complaint about this isn't that it's ugly, in this city there are a lot of public art works I think is ugly, or stupid, I look at it decide if I can find some aspect I find interesting and move on.
My biggest complaint againts this type of "art" is dumping it on someone that DOESN'T KNOW IT'S COMMING AND MAY NOT WANT IT.
Thats not art, just as TRULY forcing myself on someone is NOT BDSM

It may behoove you to read the article. This piece was left at a museum, not on a lawn. The only one left on a lawn was left to Donna Coughlin who, it seems, already received a piece of surprise art and was not upset by it.

Therefore one, particularly if it is the same artist, could reasonably assume she wouldn't be too upset about a second gift of art. She evidently caught the artist and didn't raise much of a fuss and she didn't name names for the article.
