Farkling the mundanes... SCA term. Or, shocking the vanillas....

Have you ever stopped at the store going to or from a lifestyle event and loved the reactions your outfit got in the local bistro? And a kilt in Wal-Mart gets a lot of notice.

Anyone have any good anecdotes?

If I've ever had to do something like that then I either changed in the car or threw a coat over top of myself. I see no reason or need to shock anyone. I stopped having any interest in doing so once I grew up.

The thing I don't understand is why people who do this are such cowards? You want to scare an 85 year old with dementia? So why do it to my father who you don't know? Why not go do this to your own elderly parent or grandparent?

Want to make little kids have nightmares? Why pick on strangers? Why not visit your own family, and terrify your own nephew? Have the courage of your convictions. Man up. But no, they're always cowardly, doing this to strangers instead.

This.

If I saw someone like the OP describes, rather than be shocked or scared, I would laugh at the fool. As would most people I know.

Going to and from Maryland Renaissance en garb or in belly dance attire is a hoot when sudden cravings for sustenance grab me and I must stop at safeway for a bite.
Especially on the way home when I am black and gritty with the day's dust, pollen and dancers sweat all over me.
Kilts are not shockers in theis area at all. Too many celtic/sca/renaissance events in the genral area. Plenty of Pipe and Drum Bands.
at Renn Fest we call them mundanes, muggles and straights

Sure!  I have went all sorts of places in the clothes I wear to "lifestyle" things.

Of course, I am rather boring.  So the best way to describe my clothes at these times is akin to business-office.  Slacks and blouses or dress tops.

I can't say that anyone has ever found it memorable.

I would have to say the strangest reaction I've ever gotten was from an outfit I created with my son's garb. A co-worker had a Halloween themed wedding reception (she was a twit) and invited all of her co-workers....costume required. I didn't particularly care for this co-worker but she was damned good at brown nosing the owner, owner's son, and son's wife. Attending that reception was nearly required if you worked there. There was NO WAY I was going to spend the amount of money, most of the others did, at the costume shop. So I decided to go as my son. It was during the time a very specific style of dress was popular with teens, especially boys. Very baggy, super wide legged, pants. Huge baggy shirt. Chains hanging on the pants. Baseball cap turned sideways and some specific sort of sneakers. I really nailed it.....got the shuffle and attitude going. No make up.

I had some people at the gas station doing quadruple takes trying to figure me out. It was actually rather embarassing. It was fun in that, my co-workers did not even recognise me when I got there.

Overreacting a bit aren't you? Scaring old folks, giving kids nightmares? He's talking about wearing medieval clothing for fuck's sake...you know pantaloons, tunics, maybe a shirt of chain mail.

I was under the impression that he wasn't talking about wearing medieval garb, he was talking about wearing lifestyle or "kink" clothes.

I have occasionally shown up in a store, before or after and event, dressed FOR the event.

I am usually a bit self-concious about doing so.. but if I am stopping it's because I have a damned good reason for it (tampons, for instance).

And then I look around and see what the teens and twenty somethings are wearing and I realize, by those standards, I am overdressed.

I used to have a tshirt that said " I fucked your girlfriend, and she said I was better than you".
THAT certainly got a reaction...  way more so than anything I ever wore to fetish events..LOL

I'm more subtle. I have a belt with a lucite buckle that has mistletoe embedded in it.

I have to go find it when I get home. First Xmas party of the year tonight.

Not responding directly to you, playfulotter, more using your statement as an example of a common reaction.  No offense meant.

Although it's seems frowned on here on these boards--and i understand and generally agree with people's reasoning, i think "farkling with the mundanes" is referring to what a lot of different subcultures have done e.g. punks, goths, hippies, beats, those wacky burning man artists and of late, steampunks.  It's a little bit of using chaos theory in a cultural, social, psychological way.
Yes, some might lack attention in other areas of their life, yes, it's probably sad.  They also might be trying to send a (slightly playful, if a little forceful) message of "Wake up!  There's other ways of being." Or "Don't be afraid, you won't die if you express your own uniqueness!"  Think whatever comes to mind about people who feel a need for self-expression through attire that is outside or even far outside societal norms which might garner less approval--mostly i land on the side of "s'okay by me."  But then, i kind of like things that have Trickster-spirit in it.  i'm a little more uptight about actions and behaviors though--dressed like a gimp, meh, whatev', yo', but chewing on a raw chicken in the middle of aisle three is plain ol' bad manners.  Especially if you haven't purchased it yet.

They also might not be trying to send any message at all, really, they might be just walking around as themselves--just like some of those "mundanes" do.

That aside, yes, i dated a Dom who didn't give a hoot if he was dressed up in those fetish-y outfits (think vinyl priest outfit, kilt, etc.) to do everyday things like grocery shop before or after an event, or heck, on a lazy Sunday afternoon. As i don't have much of an exhibitionist bent, i'm grateful he didn't require i do the same but i wasn't particularly upset if he was dressed that way.
i don't recall ever seeing someone having a extreme fear reaction.  At worst, there was no mention and prune-faced looks (which, i've noticed someone, somewhere might give you just for being alive). Mostly there were fairly innocent compliments. People seemed to enjoy a slightly Halloween-esque interruption to their dull-ish day.  But then, we never went outside the law or particularly far outside decorum.  my nips weren't hanging out and his pants weren't ass-less chaps.

As for amusing tales, haven't anything specific--i can guess that BDSM interested people really are everywhere though based on some people's purring complimentary reactions to fetish-y garb.

edit: no wait, i did at one point have a t-shirt that said essentially "I <3 pussy!" and a very innocent 80+ year old lady saying without any sarcasm what-so-ever, "You must really like your cat!"
Yes, ma'am. Yes, i do.
