Termyn8or -> Not a bummer computer question (11/23/2010 10:23:25 PM)

I got my shit working. The PCs, router and the works. I can access across the network and now am really out of the dark. I figured out what I didn't do before. Fine.

Now this is something I would like to do if possible. On PC1 is all the media. In my room is PC2 and PC3 is my laptop. The way it is set up I can access the files on the media PC, which is what I want. However something came to me earlier and I wonder if I can do it [without buying anything].

I would like to not only play the content from the main media PC's content, I would like to make it play on THAT PC from another PC on the network.

What I'm saying is that I want to be sitting at my kitchen table on my laptop and command the comuter up front to play the music or whatever, NOT the PC that I'm on.

Because it has bigger speakers.

Could I do that possibly through "Desktop Help" in Windows ? Other things sound more complex, but it doesn't scare me. If I could have that up and running I'd be cool. [I think] Mind you I don't want any updates.

I want to find a way to do this within Windows. For example Paltalk can take over your Media player's output. Could it work that way over the network ? That idea I don't like because it is bound to lose quality. I have thrown out many songs if the copy I had was inferior.

There has got to be a way to get what I play on my [real] speakers. I would rather not run audio cable [more] throughout the house. There is more wire in this house than at the electric company now, it's bad. But that's why I want access to my media PC. It's hooked to a thousand watts of audio and has an output for a TV, to which of course, is attached a bigscreen.

So if there's some way I can do this, it would be great. I would also of course want to isolate it from the net, so people don't start messing with my stuff.

Can I do this ?

you set up file and folder sharing, and thats I think a right click,  but no you cant do it all not all of it, because you would need server software.

Termyn8or -> RE: Not a bummer computer question (11/24/2010 8:13:22 AM)

I spoke too soon, this thing just rebooted itself again, after a full restore with the CD.

Server software ? That doesn't sound cheap. I wonder if Linux MCE might do it. In the meantime I might be looking for a new PC2.

Windows desktop help seemed like it might do it, but I've never used it so I have no idea. Worse comes to worse I guess I'll just have to run audio cables from room to room. More wires ...... this place is ridiculous, phone, cable/antenna, audio/video, I think I am responsible for the higher cost of copper these days.

You smoke.  You are a bachelor.  Whens the last time you took an air compressor to those poor things.  You sure you aint having overheating issues, fans and radiators clogged, dust bunnies napping in the capacitors, smoke film all over your transistors like a slimy rapist?

Termyn8or -> RE: Not a bummer computer question (11/24/2010 10:13:11 AM)

I got the cover off and it's not bad. Actually PC1 is the worst and it has no problems. On the wall in the back of PC1 there is a black spot on the wall ! That room was kinda smoke central, as the ear numbing machine is there. The bedroom is not so bad. (PC2)

I don't even remember how old PC2 is. I don't think it's over 5 years. I'm pretty sure it has a Gateway mobo in it.

"dust bunnies napping in the capacitors, smoke film all over your transistors like a slimy rapist?   "

Nice metaphor. I get that at work all the time, plus mouse dropping and all that fun shit (pun anyone ? ). People just don't realize that you can't use a four layer PC board laden with SMD components using .020" pin spacing as a litterbox either. I've seen the pins literally corroded off the ICs. HA, I used to have a PC, full server case, two power supplies and all that. It was on the floor with the cover off and I guess a mouse got in there and wrecked the soundcard. That's the PC that caused the big power outage years ago. I added yet one more SCSI drive and half the country went dark. If you remember, they traced the origin of the problem to this area. Those drives ate power like a ----- [error 431, no metaphor available].

Since the problem occurred after a faulty software installation, I might need a BIOS flash. Damn these new computers, I don't even know how to do that without a floppy drive. I suppose it's not all that bad, boot from CD I guess.

Strange thing about that. Now that all my media is on computers and quite backed up almost, I haven't burned a CD in a long time. I wonder if any of the CD burners work.

I dunno, maybe I'll look for the flash for this thing. I'm pretty sure I can burn it on the laptop.

Back to this later. Got things to do.

shit, you can do that off a thumb drive now. they send flashers for it with the .bin.

Arpig -> RE: Not a bummer computer question (11/24/2010 10:59:07 AM)

I am not entirely clear on what you want to do...
1) I think this is what you want...you want to control PC1 from another PC in your network (various ways, but Remote Assistance comes to mind first)
or
2) Play media that is located on PC1 on another PC in your network (File sharing will do it)

Termyn8or -> RE: Not a bummer computer question (11/24/2010 11:12:14 AM)

File sharing, no it's more than that. One PC is hooked up to the floorshaking, copbringing, neighbor pissingoff sound system in the front room. I want to sit in another room and make that particular system play the tunes from elsewhere in the house.

Remote assistance is what I was thinking, but that is mainly for help reasons so I dunno if I can just make it run the media that way. I'd also want to have the audio controls on the remote PC so I can mute it or control the volume. If I have the player window on the remote PC's screen, then videos would show up as well I would think. Think though, I don't know.

You need a remote desktop application to be able to run apps on a different machine. GoToMyPC may do what you want and is avaiable as a 30 day free trial.

MasterG2kTR -> RE: Not a bummer computer question (11/24/2010 5:40:55 PM)

There are free and/or cheap VPN softwares out there that will do what you want.

Also look at remote access control software (I think windows has some built in). It's the same stuff that a remote site service tech would use to access your computer.

hertz -> RE: Not a bummer computer question (11/25/2010 1:57:57 PM)

Why can't you just get a slave like any normal person would?

Termyn8or -> RE: Not a bummer computer question (11/25/2010 7:48:25 PM)

Thanks Ken. I might go for that but go figure, they want you to pay ! Can't really fault them for that. Since your post I actually saw it advertised somewhere, so I assume it's fairly new. But then I was kind of looking for some function in Windows that might do it. This version has surprised me at times. I assume it's futile to look for a small portable utility that isn't invasive for such a purpose.

hertz, your logic is of course infallibe. However there are probably facts not yet in evidence for you. My music directory is now so vast that it can actually take longer to find what you want to play than it takes to play it. In perhaps a month I'll have the whole thing compiled. Want it ? You have to send me a hard drive. I could instruct a slave to play some Zombie or ZZeplin, but what song ? I would rather pick it myself so I would have to see the list. Plus the fact that a slave requires constant feeding and a few other things.

So I was hoping to just write a batch file or something really. Keystrokes are cheap. Not free though, as I know firsthand. After beers and coffees going into keyboards (partly due to CM) I used to buy keyboards used in bulk. It was cheap enough but I have to modify each new keyboard. I pop off the Windows keys, one each of the control and alt keys and the capslock goes first. Otherwise every time I type an "A" the fucker starts typing all caps. You can change damnear any text attribute quite easily - except for caps. If you don't watch the screen and it comes out caps you have to typo it again. Can piss one off.

Yeah - I was only teasing you. I completely get your point. I have 120GB of music on a partition (and a full backup on an external) and finding what I want, even with the files correctly named, is a pain. Especially so because I like to create a playlist to suit my mood rather than play a whole album through. I dunno what your answer is.

It would be well cool if you could do what you want to do from a smartphone.

DomKen -> RE: Not a bummer computer question (11/26/2010 2:32:08 PM)

Happened to mention this problem to a friend who is more into PC audio than I am. Turns out winamp has a plugin that does this.

Termyn8or -> RE: Not a bummer computer question (11/27/2010 12:55:48 AM)

Now that one I really have to check out. The only problem would not be a problem. We got this software that allows streaming transmission, and it works from Windows Media Player. However, the send to menu fixes that. Even if I have to give Winamp all the file assosiations, I can still force it to play in WMP.

Nobody associated with that site seems to be able to explain just where the signal is tapped off for transmission. Old fashioned; it would be/it must be reasoning doesn't work with computers. In fact even if I don't give it all the file associations, if the addon accesses it directly, what do I care what program is playing it ? As long as the quality is good and it doesn't FUBAR the system, it doesn't matter.
