Wasn't it, and I am trying to remember so not 100% sure, Teddy Roosevelt time in office that gave us the telephone tax to pay for the Spanish-American War.   And wasn't it one of the Bush's or Clinton that finally got rid of it.   I wonder how many times we paid for that war.  Wonder how many times we pay for any war thru special taxes.

So we can be proud of ending a tax that, in the end, cost the treasury 46 billion dollars in lost revenue and refunds.

Yes we should.   It was a dedicated tax.   When the reson that we had the tax went away the tax should have gone away.     It is like the cigarette tax used to pay only for medical costs incurred by the state associated with cigarettes.   When cigarettes are outlawed, the tax won't exist any more

As above - whenever I see the concept of bipartisan debt reduction, I laugh.  Debt reduction means taking away goodies, and that there is no Santa Claus.  It's far easier to blame the other side than to do anything tough.
