I've heard that when an individual gets a tooth pulled, that drinking anything messes with the blood clotting that it has to endure to gradually stop the blood flow.

So, I'm curious. Would saliva have the same effect, in saying that it could just as easily mess with the blood clotting?

Sorry, but I was just thinking about it.

Be sure to gently put some salt water in your mouth tho.

People often suck and lick at their wounds. I did as a child. So my guess would be that saliva promotes blood clotting - but I am not sure.

Am watching this, as am getting two wisdom teeth removed on Thursday and I got an important engagement on friday, where I have to be at my best. Am wondering if I should cancel the operation till another day.

Honestly, I would. I just had to have 2 extractions today (due to my braces, and having a small mouth), and it took me 2 hours last Wednesday (when I also had 2 extractions) to get my blood to clot, and I think it is going towards 2 hours now. So, I would move the date. My mouth gets sore the next day, and although it's easy to talk, food is still a bit difficult.

Granted I think wisdom teeth are worse, but I have no knowledge of getting those extracted or messed with at all. So, this is just some "I think so, but I've never had that before" advice.

Please take it with a grain of salt though....

Use a teabag to help form the clot.

Replace your regular mouthwash with warm salt-water for the next two weeks.

You should be good.

Even better would be to talk to your maxo-facial surgeon or dentist.

One of the main things you will have to be careful with is suction. You don't want to do anything that will pull the clot out because then it will hurt like hell. This includes drinking with a straw, smoking and anything else you can think of that will cause suction on the clot. I have been told to rinse the mouth with salt water, but as gently as you can. I've never had problems after the first day, but it will also depend on where the tooth is. Ask your dentist and you should be fine. Good luck.

If you have to be at your best, yes I might reschedule the surgery.
Swelling and pain after wisdom teeth extraction is unpredictable.

You might not have any and might feel fine.
You could have a lot.

There is no way to pre-determine how it will go.

Well, I had two teeth yanked here a week ago. And a job interview the next day.....other than some residual pain which the vicodin handled, I was ok. Do the teabag thing, it works perfectly for stopping the bleeding. Once you get back home, soak the teabag under cold water and then insert it into the space in the teeth and bite down. Just leave it be...I actually fell asleep with it in my mouth, and when I woke up, the blood was done. I didn't even have a clot in the upper cavity, and one in the lower one for several days.

Don't use straws, and they tell you to drink cool drinks....specifically, no coffee. Try not to suck at the spot, or run your tongue into the hole left...you'll find yourself doing it automatically, trust me. I didn't have any problems drinking, I just sort of curved my tongue around in front of the gaps and swallowed slowly. Eating was the bear. I ate a lot of applesauce and ice cream the first couple of days, and then was eating canned pasta, ie Chef-boyardee stuff, because you can just mash it against the roof of your mouth. I'm back to eating regular food, but am still careful that I don't chew on the side with the gap on top.....I hurt it eating a wonton when the hard edge jabbed into the spot.

It all depends on where the tooth is, and how much work it is to get it out....the only one that I ever had pulled that didn't have any pain at all was the upper right wisdom tooth. The other three had to be cut or broken out of the jaw. Oh, and one other thing....if it's on top, be prepared for the pain when they shoot the novacaine into the roof of the mouth....that hurt even worse than the pulling of the teeth!

One more note....the gums heal from the inside out, so don't be afraid when you look at the hole and see jawbone......you'll see it until it closes up inside. Hopefully, your dentist will at least put a couple of stitches in for you. This last butcher didn't and they holes were HUGE!

About the numbing shots on the upper roof of the mouth: I almost cried this time. Pitiful, but dang if hurt.

Absolutely reschedule either the surgery or the appointment. I have had all my teeth removed (not all at once, but in several batches)and I always plan to do nothing that requires I be in top form the next day or two (try to schedule it for a Friday so you have the whole weekend to recover as how much recovery you require depends on many imponderables.

Doll, I DID cry.....the first time I had a tooth done, the surgeon warned me, and even put that numbing gel on the gum, but HOLY CRAP!!!!! Childbirth didn't hurt that much!!!!

And even tho I expected it this time, I still cried.....what sucked was the idjiit surgeon pumped in like the minimal amount he could, then left me for 20 minutes, the stuff started to wear off, and he had to do it AGAIN! I would have so bitten him if he hadn't put that bite block in!
