"Oh shit...she's gonna COOK!!"
                                  ~Every 911 operator, every year

I thought a holiday recipe thread would be a good idea. I made these for the LoudOnes Halloween party at school and they were a HUGE hit. They taste just like the Reeses Peanut Butter cups and are so easy to make!!

Reeses Squares - 5 Ingredients & No Bake
Yield 36 bars

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1 lb confectioners' sugar (3 to 3 1/2 cups)
1 1/2 cups peanut butter
1 cup butter, melted
1 (12 ounce) bag milk chocolate chips

Directions: Prep Time: 15 mins Total Time: 15 mins
  1.  Combine graham crumbs, sugar and peanut butter and mix well.
  2.  Blend in melted butter until well combined.
  3.  Press mixture evenly into a 9 x 13 inch pan.
  4.  Melt chocolate chips in microwave or in double boiler.
  5.  Spread over peanut butter mixture.
  6.  Chill until just set and cut into bars (these are very hard to cut if the chocolate gets "rock hard".

Yeaaaaa !
A recipe thread. I love these, have tried many dishes ovr the years from these threads. Thanx Holly ! And I LOVE those Reeses Squares. I have never made them, but will try this weekend

I recently tried this recipe and it was a huge go over. I'm making it for Thanksgiving too. It says it's a " pie " but it is more like an apple crisp pie.

Ingredients

4 cups Cortland or Winesap apples, peeled, cored and sliced
3/4 cup white sugar
1 to 2 tsps Cinnamon
1/2 cup Bisquick mix
2 eggs
3/4 cup Milk
2 Tbsps Softened Butter or margaring
1 tsp vanilla extract

Topping:
2/3 cup All -purpose flour
1/3 cup Packed brown sugar
1/4 tsp salt
3 Tbsp butter or margarine - softened

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 10 inch pie plate. Place sliced apples in pie plate along with the sugar and cinnamon, stir.

Mix the bisquick, eggs, milk, butter & vanila. Blend until smooth, Pour over pie.

TOPPING:
Mix the flour, brown sugar, salt and butter until crumbly. Scatter over apples. Bake 350 oven for 50 minutes until apples are cooked.

NOTE: You can use any cooking type apple that you like. I find the harder the apple, the better the texture. The recipe called for McIntosh and it came out way too mushy

I'm wondering if adding some cream to the chips would help them stay a bit softer, will have to experiment.

"Mormon Waffles"

(so named because the Mormon missionaries in Argentina ordered them this way)

Waffles
dulce de leche (recipe follows)
fresh fruit medley- cut into bite sized pieces (bananna, strawberry, kiwi, apple, whatever)
whipped cream

Dulce de Leche
1. Turn your crock pot on high
2. fill halfway with water
3. take 2 unopened cans of sweetened condensed milk (Not evaporated milk!) and with a permanent marker, mark an "X" on the top side of each can. This will help you to keep track of them when you are turning them.
4. place cans in water with the "X" side up
5. Make a note of what time you put the cans in
6. After 1 hour, turn the cans (with tongs!!) so the X's face down
7. After another hour, turn the cans again (X's up)
8. After another hour, turn the cans again (X's down)
9. After another hour, turn the cans again (X's up), and immediately turn off the crockpot
10. Let the cans cool overnight in the water, with the crockpot off
11. Do not try to open cans while they are hot!!!
12. The paper labels will come off in the water. If You plan on storing the unopened cans, make sure You affix some kind of a label so you know what it is
13. Dulce de leche is a very thick, very sweet milk caramel from Argentina. Enjoy! Our family always ate these waffles Christmas morning, to celebrate the fact that both my parents were missionaries to Argentina.

Ganache might not be quite right for this. This sounds like oneof those jobs where a good serrate dbread knife or an electric carving knife would do the trick or you could just be careful with how thick the chocolate top is.

How about a nice appetiser ? Slice of water chestnut and a medium size smoked oyster wrapped in a half piece of bacon. Keep it together with a toothpick and broil for just a couple of minutes.

*Sigh*... holly's recipe would send me into a diabetic coma and servantforuse's recipe is about as nonkosher as you can get.

I just wanted to chime in that dulce de leche can be bought if you do some looking.  That would save a LOT of can turning.

pam, I always thought that dulce de leche had sugar in addition to condensed milk...?

It's a family recipe. i'm sure there are other ways to make it. But reducing milk and sugar slowly over heat seems even more of a pain than flipping cans.

If you make dulce de leche in the crockpot, just lay the cans on their sides and you don't have to turn them at all; they should be completely submerged. Lay a piece of foil under them to avoid rust marks in your crock (although that can be scrubbed off). Cook on low for 8 hours, take out the cans, let cool to warm or room temp. If you want some for a breakfast recipe (with waffles, for instance, or stirred into coffee), you can put them in before you go to bed and they will be ready in the morning.

When I make dulce de leche, I do it in a pot of boiling water on the stove, cans on their sides. Every time I replenish the water, I roll the cans around a bit. Total cooking time is 3 hours, let cool before opening (can be opened warm, just don't open hot). I use the finished dulce de leche for caramel tarts, topped with freshly whipped cream.

Around here, in the mexican food section, Walmart carries cans of dulce de leche, but I like the flavor better when I make it myself.

Condensed milk already has the sugar added to it.

I do the peanut butter blossoms with Hershey Kiss in the middle. Except my son found the bag of cookies in the freezer and ate them all so I need to make a new batch. Also chocolate almond biscotti and chocolate chip cookies. Toffee mandelbrot with mini chocolate chips.

We go to my sister's, about an hour and a half so I have to bring stuff that doesn't need a long reheat. I also bring baked stuffed potatoes which we reheat on the grill since the oven is full.

coquito (Puerto Rican eggnog)

2 - 3 cinnamon sticks
2 c. water
12 oz. evaporated milk
14 oz. condensed milk
4 egg yolks
15 oz. cream of coconut
4 c. white rum (Bacardi, Don Q. etc) (Adjust to taste)

Directions
Start by boiling the cinnamon sticks in the 2 cups of water.

When the water turns yellow and has the smell and you can taste the cinnamon, take the sticks out.

Now add the evaporated milk, condensed milk and egg yolks and cook at a very low temperature. Make sure to stir while it is cooking to avoid it sticking to your pan.

After it has boiled for a few minutes, stir in the cream of coconut and then the rum. Stir it very well and take off the stove.

Let it cool, chill and enjoy it .

Tips
you can leave the Bacardi out. tastes better after a feww days in the fridge but still quite good when fresh. Salud.

So no sugar and kosher. hmmm, ok take some turkey bacon, precook it for about 3 minutes and then wrap 1/2 a piece around a shrimp and secure with a toothpick. Repeat with remaining shrimp.  Place on a cookie sheet, sprinkle with bbq seasoning and  bake at 475 for about 15 minutes.

Another one I have found people go for. Take some cream cheese and spread on the bottom of a pie tin. Should be about 1/2 inch thick. Spread a can of Hormell no bean chili on top of that and then sprinkle on some shredded sharp cheddar cheese. Put in oven at 350 until cheese is melted. Serve with tortilla chips.
