KenDckey -> Govt intrusion or smart govt (11/9/2010 7:56:03 PM)

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101110/ap_on_bi_ge/us_kids_meal_crackdown

SF limits when you can give a toy with a kids meal.

Personally I think it is an intrusion.   Yes, the toys are a marketing thing, but what difference does it make to the county BOS.  I think it is a major intrusion that wouldn't hold up in court.

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Govt intrusion or smart govt (11/9/2010 8:10:19 PM)

Its ridiculous, but I dont agree that it wont hold up in court.

littlewonder -> RE: Govt intrusion or smart govt (11/9/2010 8:14:27 PM)

Being a mom I have no problems with it. When my daughter was young she'd always want the unhealthy meals for the sole purpose of the toys. I rarely ever bought them for her though for that reason. They're tempting to children and it's like rewarding them for bad behaviour. I think it's a good idea but parents have to be vigilant and teach their children to eat healthier as well and not give in to the gimmicks.

In this day and age where the obesity rate in children is at an all time high I think it's time that government steps in. It doesn't seem like anyone else is willing to do the work.

I see no reason they shouldn't prod the companies to switch apple slices for fries. Or a yogurt. It's hardly an imposition for them to carry that. Only they won't without it being required. My daughter didn't eat fries and would have loved to have a yogurt with her chicken pieces. The option ought to be there.

On one hand you claim it is your responsibility as a mother, then in the next sentence you decide that it is the government's responsibility.

When the company spends billions in advertising dollars to woo or sell the child and not the parent on the product then, yes, the gov't has the right to step in and help the parent police the company. No one parent would or could have an effect on McD's by themselves.

How about if parents police their own children?

Seems a much easier solution to me.

DomYngBlk -> RE: Govt intrusion or smart govt (11/10/2010 5:24:35 AM)

you are driving down the road and see the playground and the shop. What can you police? You turn on the TV for 10 minutes and you see a commercial. Stop watching TV altogether? Come on, tell me how you police a child out of not being sold on McD's

KenDckey -> RE: Govt intrusion or smart govt (11/10/2010 6:13:31 AM)

To me it sounds like the socialists of the world are taking control again.   Let us take care of you kids because you aren't qualified to make those decisions.   We'll take good care of them.   Now go stand in a corner and cry because you aren't allowed to decide for yourself.

Lucylastic -> RE: Govt intrusion or smart govt (11/10/2010 6:20:30 AM)

socialists of the world?? what are you on?? seriously, do you  over dramatise much?

Whether they are sold on it or not you are the parent.

As Aunt Nancy told us, just say no.

This has nothing to do with socialism.

This is the "do-gooder" mentality that we have always had in this country.

KenDckey -> RE: Govt intrusion or smart govt (11/10/2010 6:35:00 AM)

When they tell you what you can eat they are socialists/communists/something other than what I think our government should be.

When the media calls a criminal an immigrant (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101110/ap_on_re_us/us_adoption_battle) they aren't serving the country.

When the government seals someone's work under the guise of color (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101110/ap_on_re_us/us_supreme_court_doctor_s_advocate) of law to shut them up (no I didn't agree with the individual only their right to speak).

Wasn't it during the Clinton Administration that wanted to take your children under the government's wing    Looks like SF took it to heart.   Isn't taking your children under the Governments wing socialism?   If you don't have a logical argument isn't it in the socialists playbook to attack the individual personally the way I feel you did me by accusing me of being on something?   Who made you the boss of what I take (althought I didn't take anything I did exercise my god given right to FREE SPEECH - which it appears to me that you desire to quell.   Now may I suggest that you comment to the facts and issues or feelings and issues.   Thoughts are good.   Ideas are good.   But personal attacks aren't except in the socialist playbook (my personal research over the years)

thishereboi -> RE: Govt intrusion or smart govt (11/10/2010 6:37:28 AM)

That is just great news for all those parents in SF who can't grasp the idea of telling their kids no. Now they don't have to worry that their kids will be mad at them, because that is vital when raising a child. Wouldn't want little Sally to learn that she can't have anything she wants. So much better to have the gov do it for you.

McDonalds has been doing that for quite a while now. And yes I think it's a really good idea.

The same way we did with our kids. If it has been a while since they had a happy meal, and they have been good, you let them have one. If they had one last week, you say no. See how easy that is. Just say no[8D]

DomYngBlk -> RE: Govt intrusion or smart govt (11/10/2010 7:07:04 AM)

Reality going to swing by anytime now......or are we going to stay in fantasy world

servantforuse -> RE: Govt intrusion or smart govt (11/10/2010 7:12:42 AM)

I think it might not hold up in court. Why not crack down on all fast food chains ? Why are all of the other chains excempt ?

KenDckey -> RE: Govt intrusion or smart govt (11/10/2010 7:16:20 AM)

I think that is the intent of the law.   I think that McD's is being used as an example not the sole target.   I also believe that they have passed out more toys than the others, but that is an opinion.

Well both kids are grown now and yes it did work for us. Neither one hated us for saying no and neither one grew up to be obese. In fact my parents took the same route and it worked for them also.  So just how many years does it take for the reality and just what is reality to you?
