purepleasure -> RE: if you show up for jury duty selection carrying a stufffed toy sucking thumb in your jammies lol (11/6/2010 8:59:39 PM)

i get jury summons every 2 to 3 years, and have only served once, it was a driving under teh influence, resulting in an accident causing a death.

last time i was called was july of 2007, so i'm about due again.

Kaliko -> RE: if you show up for jury duty selection carrying a stufffed toy sucking thumb in your jammies lol (11/6/2010 11:47:41 PM)

I was called to jury duty and went, but wasn't chosen for the trial. That was over 15 years ago. I know other people who are chosen every few years. I wonder why?

purepleasure -> RE: if you show up for jury duty selection carrying a stufffed toy sucking thumb in your jammies lol (11/7/2010 5:16:58 AM)

because we're such fine, upstanding citizens <insert eye roll>

or we're just lucky like that.

Depends what they draw from. If it's voter registration rolls and you don't vote, then you won't get called.

Kaliko -> RE: if you show up for jury duty selection carrying a stufffed toy sucking thumb in your jammies lol (11/7/2010 9:03:56 AM)

I always vote! And I'm one of those sickos that feel it is my not completely unpleasurable duty to serve on a jury.

I am interested now how they choose. I will have to look into it.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: if you show up for jury duty selection carrying a stufffed toy sucking thumb in your jammies lol (11/7/2010 9:49:56 AM)

I'm not registered to vote, but I have a CA Id. my dad says they pick from DMV info too.

TFB -- Jury selection is very indepth, most people don't know this or understand the ins and outs of same.  The Judge has a vital role in jury selection -- he presides over the questioning of possible jurors by the attorneys and may even question same themselves.  In some venues he is the one who does the questioning and may allow the attorneys to question the juries.  Jury selection tends to be a very important part of the trial and the judges do have a significant role in same.

Also, as for making up things to get out of jury duty etc like the OP or  the capital punishment excuse is not always a valid concept to be excused from jury duty, saying your are biased or will interpret the law or whatever you think will get you out of jury duty most likely will not because on many levels you really don't know the type of person the attorneys are each looking for.  It is harder in my opinion to pick a criminal jury versus a civil one simply because of what is needed to convict.  The usual is each side has only a certain amount of strikes they get to use in jury selection - and how these strikes are utilized are different in each venue. Its not always if one side doesn't want you, you are outta there.   The courts are long used to people doing everything they can to get out of jury duty.  So while you think your idea may be a brilliant way to get out of jury duty -- don't be so sure you are that brilliant -- better people have come before you lol.  The attorneys know a little more about you than your answers to their questions.  They know who is going to be in the jury pool days before the trial.  You also have to realize you are up against attorneys who spend their livelihood questioning people and deciphering things from the answers as well as judges doing the same,  They really aren't as stupid as many people want to believe they are.

What if you go for being utterly honest and tell them for every question you ask you don't care, you're only here because you have to be ? I suppose maybe the judge would find that in contempt of court too?

tiggerspoohbear -> RE: if you show up for jury duty selection carrying a stufffed toy sucking thumb in your jammies lol (11/7/2010 3:43:07 PM)

Most people don't show up because they want to, some are there out of a sense of a duty, some couldn't care less, some would do anything to to get on a jury.  Why not just consider that if it wasn't for the justice system in Canada, the States, and other countries where you're lucky enough to get a trial by a jury of your peers and not just considered guilty for your crime.  Yes, there's always going to be injustices, but that's the legal system for now.  The best we have for the time being.

So being "honest" as you call it is unfair to the system that's in place now.  No disrespect intended, but get a clue, and no matter what you ask, it comes down to the same thing.  You either get called for jury duty and act like an adult and treat it as such, or face the consequences of your actions.

If ya don't get called, then you don't. It's considered an act of maturity on the part of those being summoned to jury duty to act like it, with grace, dignity and common sense.  Not like some spoiled child who says "no I don't wanna" and has a temper tantrum.

POINT. FINAL. BATON.

poohbear, my question first place was more of a joke fantasy. I wouldn't really do it, I have more brains than that, the private little fantasy did amuse me though. Second of all I don't care if you think people should go want to or not because it's the mature thing to do, or our duty or we're obligated, or we're doing a service or what ever reason people who're in favor of forcing those that don't want to, care to, or can go to jury duty to do jury duty. . I don't support the idea you have to go cause it's your duty. I always get excused from jury duty the few times I got called because I am probably unfit as a potential juror, and I couldn't care less and would half ass the job, if I couldn't get excused or the likely hood of being picked was that great . Getting excused,  that to me is more mature than going and half assing my appearance.

And if you're a respectable law abiding citizen, I am willing to bet, that the times you find yourself in court, in need of a juror of your peers, will be slim sort of slim, to none. I don't intend on doing shit to get my ass in a sling bad enough to need to appear in court before a jury, so  yeah, while  it's great California has jurors and fair court proceedings, but I never intend to need one. Any of us could be called in as a witness to an event, and you'd need to provide a solid assessment of our testimony.  Not half-ass it.

If you know you are unqualified to be a juror, simply ask for a side conversation with the attorneys and the judge and explain why.

I hope that works out for you.  The courts are full of people much smarter than you who never thought they were going to be in court one day either.

Amen Sistah!
I was called several times over the years, and I always felt a sense of pride.
Of course, that was before having to go around the block 20 times to find a place to park.[:)]

Why do you see yourself as unfit?

The defendant is being tried before his/her peers.
You don't have to be perfect, or dress a certain way or have a certain level of schooling.

I do not see you as incapable.
You are capable of making well thought posts.
You are capable of careful thought.

True you are impulsive sometimes.
But you have some control over that if you want to.

Most cases aren't very long.

You may not need a jury, but that doesn't mean you don't have a duty to participate in what is an important part of our society: our justice system.

Don't sell your self short like that.
Using disability as an excuse to get out of responsibility, is such a disservice to you.

I often go to work in jammies . . . (I work at home)
I have a collection of stuffed safari animals . . . (they are awesome little guys)
Why shouldn’t I go to court all comfy like… Michael Jackson did.

I think a lot of the stuff that goes on in a court room would  be very technicalish, and go over my head and my ability to know what was going on.

I don't know for sure, never having been in a court room or  on a jury, but I have a suspicion that court stuff is above my level of intelligence or "book smarts".
