I was just going to say, not every one can or does dress buisnessy. It's good to know they'd consider that.

(making a mental not a talking Dino would not be well recieved)

In our area, anything that would waste the courts time is not well received, hence the need to fine people who would show up in inappropriate attire.

We also get paid for jury duty here its 9 dollars a day for the first week then if it continues on they pay you 100 dollars for the entire week after that you serve, on top of lunch parking and everything else being provided your work at least in pa has to compensate you for the time your on the jury. My company will pay up to a week a year. So you get double compensation for sitting there and pretending to pay attention. I dont understand why anyone would try to get out of jury duty with out a necessary reason.

Whatcha think would happen. To lay the weirdness on even thicker, you could only have the dinosaur or stuffed toy talk for you lol.

Does the term "contempt of court" ring a bell?  Pull a Klinger and I expect you'd get slapped with a fine at the very least.  You might even end up doing jail time or being involuntarily committed for psych evaluation.  Neither would be much fun.

There are subtler and smarter ways to get out of jury duty that don't put you at risk of jail time.  Personally I'd be inclined to tell so much of the truth that neither side would want me on the jury under any circumstances.

I was called for a murder trial a few years ago. It was a hate crime -- a skinhead-type killed a gay man -- so there was an extensive written questionnaire to facilitate the initial screening. I explained in writing that I intended to judge both the facts and the law. I expected to be dismissed after they read that, but they left me in. In the end I wasn't selected, but just by luck. My intuition is that judges are growing wary of dismissing jurors who assert their rights. I didn't care if I was dismissed or not, but figured there was no point in hiding from them what they'd be getting if they picked me.

I have been called for jury duty and served in a wrongful death suit.  The doctor had *clearly* made a horrible mistake.  There was no question.  We made it through I think 2 days before they settled.  I found it an interesting experience and was deeply disappointed that other jurors were doing things like... falling asleep.  I was horrified by that.

Best,
sunshine

I just realize...if I dressed up like Leslie (a legend in Austin), I would be dismissed from jury duty.

But landscapers and farmers wear tees and jeans as business attire. So unless the jury summons specified exactly what must be worn, I think it would be easy to have the fine dismissed.

Here they're pretty easy. My daughter was up at college when the summons came, she just went up and saw the clerk and he rescheduled her for the summer. If I get called in winter, I would just ask them to move it till the ice is out. But it's not uncommon here to simply call in every night and be told you aren't needed. When my daughter's rescheduled time came, that's what happened. They never needed her.

However I will not do grand jury. I have a moral objection to the rules that govern them. If you answer any question to a grand jury, you are not then allowed to plead the fifth amendment. I'm a Jeffersonian democrat, if the fifth amendment was good enough for Thomas Jefferson, then it's good enough for me.

I can't think of anything more boring* ok I can, but for this purpose lets just go with the catch phrase* then spending all day at a court house on the small chance you'll get selected.  And you don't have to just pretend to pay attention if you're actually on a jury, someone's fate will be partially in your hands, if you haven't been paying attention and know the facts, and you just go along with something and fudge an answer, I don't think it's right to do that to someone else , Plus I really can not sit for as long as a person on an active jury  is required to sit. Even with breaks to get up now and then. It's just flat out boring and one of the last things I'd ever desire to do. I probably also if I am honest don't have the capability of following along and comprehending some of the stuff. I imagine there's a lot of legal jargon and other stuff I wouldn't even begin to come close to understanding.

Also, When Daddy was called for Jury duty, he found out his job* We're in Sacramento California and no I am not telling people what his job is, he's asked me not to do stuff like that, because I was to free in the past with the information an he didn't approve* didn't pay for Jury duty, so he'd be loosing wages, the paltry 9 dollars a day they pay you wouldn't e ven begin to compare to the 10  dollars an hour he'd get for working a full day,  plus any tips he'd be making at work. On a good day at work, you could pull in 60 to 70, even 100 dollars a day in tips if you were lucky, so 9 dollars a day is a slap in the face to someone who can make such good money at work. Nor would it even begin to compensate for gas and wear and tear driving clear across town to the court house.

He went and he wasn't called, so that was the end of that, he went in plain old  street clothing, jeans anda t shirt,  an they didn't say a word about it.

So the whole day he spent waiting around the court house, just to not get called was wasted, not only wasted in time but a waste of money, he could of been making at work.

True. True. I don't have much to do with courts an stuff, so it never occurred to me you could get a fine or be called in contempt of court.

You could get a judge who might decide to hit you with contempt of court.

If you really didn't want to be there just listen once the lawyers start asking questions.  It shouldn't take but a few minutes to figure out what to say to be dismissed.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: if you show up for jury duty selection carrying a stufffed toy sucking thumb in your jammies lol (11/4/2010 2:29:57 PM)

I was told the judges have nothing to do with picking the jurors, just making sure the selection was picked right, or something like that.

I don't even know what that is Shar, but I could still plead it if I ever get called again.

soul2share -> RE: if you show up for jury duty selection carrying a stufffed toy sucking thumb in your jammies lol (11/4/2010 3:46:12 PM)

Yes, TFB, it IS the Judges that determine if someone is in contempt of court.  Do anything to disrupt the proceedings on his courtroom, and you'll find yourself sitting in a cell.  The judges I've personally known in the past wouldn't think twice about putting someone there for doing anything like the situation you're describing.  (And the "you" is a generic term here, not personal.)  And you'll usually sit there until called back before the judge to make an apology.

Not the way I'd want to spend the day.......

YSG -> RE: if you show up for jury duty selection carrying a stufffed toy sucking thumb in your jammies lol (11/4/2010 3:50:54 PM)

Meh, if I was trying to avoid jury duty, I'd just show up naked.

Well, my excuse for the double posting is punchiness (up at 3:30 am this morning).

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: if you show up for jury duty selection carrying a stufffed toy sucking thumb in your jammies lol (11/4/2010 4:32:10 PM)

Soul, I'm talking about not the judges place to pick the jurors, not decide who's in contempt.

Yeah, I wouldn't want that to happen either. If I thought sitting around the court house waiting to be called was boreing I would sure find sitting in jail till the judge decided to call me back  was worse.
