I know this comment will come back to bite me in the ass one day.....but this is just another reason why road tests should be mandatory every 5 to 10 years for everyone especially the elderly!

Actually, I think you'll find more and more people agreeing with you, myself one of them....having lived in two snowbird/elderly driver states, I know firsthand how they are a very real danger on the roadways.  They are oblivious to their surroundings like this lady was, or they are driving vehicles too big for them.....I've been behind cars that you couldn't even see the driver in it.....so you can't tell me they can see out of it!

Their reaction speed is greatly reduced, their eyesight poor....yeah, I know, flame on, but it's a simple fact.  We've all seen it in our driving around every day!  I was stopped at a red light once, and watched the elderly woman driver chatting to her friend next to her just saaaaaaaiiiiiiillll right on through the red light.....of a very big intersection in Mesa.  Fortunately, the drivers who actually had the right of way hadn't yet started through the intersection, so she made it through okay.  I caught up with her at the next red light, and she was STILL just yammering away to her friend.....who apparently didn't see the red light she ran either.

Elderly drivers should be tested every year.....a full road test, not just "look into this and tell me what you see".  I know it's a question of freedom for them to have access to a car, but when they become a hazard, and refuse to see it themselves, then someone needs to step in and draw the line.

I lived in Ft. Myers for a while.
At least every other week you would see someone stopped on the freeway on ramp at the yield sign with the arm out the window giving a manual signal for a left turn.

I dont know about testing every year.

DRs here will pretty much pull a license of those who cant have one.  Also elderly often can tell for themself when they cant drive.

My neighbor wont drive when she has vertigo.   She will drive the rest of the time and is as good of a driver as I am.
This driver tho was not her.   LOL

Everyone should be tested every five years. It would raise revenue and reduce violations, also would add jobs. But I'm now trying to figure out where they could add another three road courses around here.

Most doctors don't test for reflexes to see how a person drives.

My eye surgeon finally said either I did the second eye or he would pull my license. He let me keep it a few more months till my daughter got her learners permit on the condition I wouldn't drive in the dark. But unless they go to an opthalmologist, that doesn't happen, primary physicians don't have the data necessary to make that call.

There was a report just yesterday that insurance premiums for female drivers over 60 are 80% higher than for men in cases where all other factors are identical. When challenged for an explanation about the sexist pricing policy, the governing body pretty much said,

"They can go fuck themselves, we've published our statistics on RTA incidences between men and women over 60 for everyone to see, and our members aren't losing money just to pander to political correctness".

I'd vote for mandatory testing every 5 years. Maybe at a lower level than the initial qualifying test, but certainly at a level to prove a reasonable degree of competence.

But I don't agree that the elderly or women or any other group are especially worse drivers than anyone else. Fact is, some people really shouldn't be allowed on the road with their level of driving skill, and pretty much every social group will have members who can't drive sufficiently well to be let loose on the rest of us in a vehicle.

Out of interest, what does renewal involve?

Always has an eye test-  written and drive is how they feel.   One has to be prepared for all 3.    Tho the eye test is the one - we ALWAYS get.

I've gotten eye tests before. Last time I renewed they all of a sudden told me I no longer need glasses when I drive. (Um - that's about the only time I need them. I can't see a thing past my windshield!) I would definitely be in favor, though, of a mandatory driving skills test.

I see people now and then who have no business being behind the wheel, there was this doddering old lady who could barely walk she was so frail, and bent over an she got in the car an she couldn't even barely see over the wheel, but nobody said a word about her driving.

It took my Dad (79 years old) 2 tries last year for the actual driving test. I have mixed emotions about it. I'd hate to see him lose his independence, but public safety should come first.

My mom failed her drivers exam lol. She missed to many questions on the written test, so they gave her a one month extension, but she didn't take it seriously and hardly studied, and was just inches away from failing again one more question wrong an she would of failed, she would of lost her liscence too.

It doesnt take 10 years for changes to become drastic. especially among the elderly or anyone else. Road tests, in my opinion, should be mandatory for every renewal, along with eye exams, every 4 years till 70, then every two years after that.

There-in lies part of the problem that exists today. I know it varies from state to state, but here in Wisconsin, a driver's license is good for 8 years. So that means you have a pretty long stretch before testing would come up. I would be in favor of shorter periods, say 4 years instead of the current 8.

I understand that having a driver's license extends a sense of freedom and independence for most people. However, many take that privelege for granted, and as I originally stated, this may bite me in the ass one day, but I still favor mandatory re-testing on a regular cycle for all drivers. The tests should include written and road skills. Driving is a PRIVELEGE not a right!
