I am, for the first time, embarrassed to be living in NH.

I don't understand, though, how they can do that. Isn't that discriminatory? I can see if they won't print an article supporting it. But to not print an announcement about it? Does that mean that they won't mention a same-sex spouse in an obituary announcement, either? How can it be okay to make a blanket rejection of merely an announcement of an event in someone's life based on their sexuality? Even if they're privately owned - privately owned doesn't mean permission to discriminate - ...... does it?

They pick and choose which wedding announcements to cover every day. They probably would print one about a banker and an architect over one about a garage mechanic and convenience store clerk. They aren't obliged to print all of them. I would suggest you call up and inform them you're canceling your subscription because of this. Newspapers are not that profitable any more and getting hit in the wallet will make them more willing to change then getting all this publicity.

Freedom of the press means that a paper can choose to print, or to not print, whatever they like.

I hope that any and all homosexuals and gay friendly folk will boycott this paper and will also write to the publisher and make them aware of why they are choosing to boycott.

Is it discriminatory? Yes. Is it discriminatory in some actionable manner? Probably not. I would guess that the paper would protected under the first amendment. The press has a long history of printing what it wants when it wants. Since most press leans to the left it usually doesn't bother most people. When one that leans to the right does it it ruffles feathers. Go figure. I'm sure the ACLU will be along shortly to chime in.

it's a private business. They can pick and choose to print whatever they like.

Around here the newspaper never prints same sex unions and you'll never see mention of such in an obit. I live in a conservative area so no one really ever takes notice anyway.

Same sex marriage isn't legal here, but obits don't state "they leave their beloved friend", they refer to it in an oblique manner such as funeral arrangements being made by in order not to annoy any of the conservatives.

Yes, I know how you poor conservatives are always getting picked on by the liberal media.

I feel your pain.

Hello,

It will change eventually.  Fifty years ago papers wouldn't announce a birth to an unwed mother, thirty years ago actors had to hide if they were gay.   Change does happen, but it takes a long time, and it takes people being "radical" and speaking out about discrimination in any form.

It does, unless those rights are specifically protected by some law. For instance, racial or sexual orientation discrimination in a work place is prohibited by labor laws. On the other hand, when you try to get into a club and the bouncer says he does not like you - you are out of luck.

I agree, but there is no legal basis for discrimination here.

The only remedy, as some others have pointed out, is to stop buying the newspaper, boycott the advertisers in the paper, and other similar ways to put pressure on them.

Do such announcements cost to post?   Obits do.

My local paper will run sorta of type announcements tho use certain words.   I think... either way- no one reads newspapers anymore- life is all online now.
