How to wash vintage cashmere?

How to wash vintage cashmere? - 10/24/2010 9:55:12 AM

Status: offline 		I recently bought a 1950s cashmere cardigan from Saks 5th Avenue that I found at the local vintage store.

I've heard that the best way to wash cashmere with shampoo by hand.

Is this truly the best way? Are there any other techniques? Also, since its fairly old, is there a certain way to go about cleaning it?

Status: offline 		If there is beading or the like on it, handwashing VERY CAUTIOUSLY is your best bet. DO NOT WRING OR TWIST, dry flat on a towel, or a sweater dryer (do they still make those? they were mesh gizmos that hung over the bathtub). Woolite is good for such things, just like it says, but use a minimal amount of soap, and cold water. Roll in a towel to get rid of the excess moisture, then shape it.

Yes, I have washed many old things. The only ones to not make it through were the ones being held together by the dirt. Gentle, gentle, gentle.

Status: offline 		um...if they come in like a cris-cross rack of sorts, yes they still make them. I stopped using mine since i would get the bumps from the rack stuck in my clothes.

Status: offline 		Maybe the gentle cycle in a lingerie bag?  I wash my stitching this way, I fold it so it doesn't get misshapen, but it gets clean, doesn't rip the threads out, and when it's done, I just roll it in a towel.  I just make sure the bag fits the size of the project so it won't unfold.

Status: offline 		The agitation of a washing machine will not be good for cashmere, even in a mesh bag. You want to gently push the material under the soapy water, swishing it back and forth. Then rinse thoroughly, using the gentle pushing and swishing action. Let the water drain out of the sink, leaving the sweater in the sink, then gently push the water out of it (the idea is not to pick it up and wring it out). Lay it on a large clean towel, and roll it up, then gently squeeze the roll (don't twist or wring it). Then unroll it and do it again with another clean towel. Then lay it on the mesh dryer (I have a fine mesh dryer that has nylon netting on it). Gently shape it to the correct shape and size.

My mom used to dry sweaters flat on a towel to avoid marks.
