pahunkboy -> Can a screen name be too public? (10/21/2010 5:10:49 PM)

You know the drill.  See a certain name and you like or hate the post before you read it.  Expecting ABC, or XYZ.

At what point does a screen name be too public?

Some things- I dont mind the entire Internet knowing.  Other things- like event of today---  I am pretty private over. At least for now.

It seems that many-  my screen name is too close to the real me.

The question- is- has anyone ran into this?

Any names I used are-  too public by now.

Thoughts?

Are you actually meaning the "reputation" one's id has? Otherwise, Im confused by the bolded portion. Or, say my real name is pose...because I made it poise, this hits too close to being the real me? Clarify what you really mean please [:D]

I think your right.  You see certain screen names and people can just skip over the post or expect they know what is written before they ever read it.

Well there are two questions here:

1. can a screen name be too revealing is what I think you are saying? who knows, think about some of them, Lordgrandmasterbigpoobaoftheentireuniverse would not be a realistic depiction of someone, right?

2. does a screen name carry with it the expectation of that person's personality? Of course, if they post alot everyone is going to have an opinion of people by how they post. There is nothing else to judge other than the words.

It would be nice if we were all so open minded that we would not expect a certain posting style, but it is what it is here.

Kinda wish the screen name I had chosen was 'Fruit dealer'.

hertz -> RE: Can a screen name be too public? (10/22/2010 2:12:13 PM)

I always think that screen names starting 'Dom...' are too much like screen names starting 'Dumb...' and that leads me to judgement on the posts following the names. Personally, I think if your real name is 'Dumb', then you definitely shouldn't use a screen name that begins 'Dom...' because that rather gives the game away.

Stereotypical names make me wince. Names like 'Harsh Master With A Big Stick' and 'Put It In My Mouth I Won't Complain' - I just don't see the appeal...

I'd love to see a guy named Dominic with a screen name like "DomtheDom" or "DomDom"

:D

MrKicia -> RE: Can a screen name be too public? (10/22/2010 4:47:22 PM)

I think the OP is eluding to screen names like "poopeater" "livesforpussy"  "kickmypenis"  "slutforsale".  You look at the screen name and think if the author of this thread was that uncreative in picking a screen name, how well thought out and coherent are their post going to be.

I used to dump a screen name after 2 or so years.

I am not sure how I feel about it. It is a mixed bag no doubt.

Yep, I have a couple of people on ignore because I have recognized them as ones who seem to post a lot of goofy conspiracy theories that are really waaaaay out there, or they have shown a penchant for inserting the same political crap into threads that are supposed to be light-hearted and fun.  On the rare occasion that I actually unhide them to see what nonsense they have posted, I'm never disappointed!

I'd like to see Sylvester Stallone sign up as "Dombo".

littlewonder -> RE: Can a screen name be too public? (10/23/2010 9:27:12 PM)

I've had this same nick for years upon years, use it in numerous places online and have never had a problem with anyone. I don't change it because I'd probably forget what name I used.

My nick doesn't really say anything about me except that I like the song.

kttqnp -> RE: Can a screen name be too public? (10/24/2010 7:20:01 AM)

Google makes everything too public.  For simplicity's sake, I once considered using my Collarme name for all my online screen names.  That is, until I realized that googling it would bring up a link to my profile and all my forum posts, and clicking on those links leads to the CM sign-up page, explict content warning and all.  Not something I want everyone to see.  I'm not sure if that's what you were driving at, but it's something not everyone may be aware of.  Sign out and google your own screen name and try it.  The more unique the screen name, the more it stands out.  Say, "littlewonder" or "poise", no problem. But "pahunkboy" or "kttqnp" stick out like sore thumbs.
