This really came out nowhere.  One moment I'm doing something, the next BAM! a memory long forgotten comes flooding back from the dark corner of my brain.

So I was in the Chinatown part of Las Vegas and was super excited to find these mochi sweets on a stick.  When I took that first bite, one repressed memory I had no clue I kept under wraps came flooding back to me like it happened yesterday.  I, as an 7 year old girl, stood waiting for the light to turn green at a street corner.  A car suddenly pulls up and this man had his weener out flashing me then drives off.    It was an ugly, wilted thing, pale with dark hairs sticking out at random places.  Ew, ew, EW!  I think I was too confused as a kid to know what to do.  I never told anyone or cried or moped around about it.  I just pretended like nothing happened but I'm pretty sure I threw the sweets away because as soon as I remembered this, I just couldn't eat it anymore.  Haha!  How weird!

No question, really.  I guess I just wanted to share something weird that happened to me.  I'm not going to ask anybody to share their darkest secrets on CM posts but anybody care to share anything?

I wish I had repressed memories. I would like to have my mind scrubbed like the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind movie.

The memories are not repressed, but I have had odd things or long since forgotten memories pop up. Most of them were not pleasant, and made me shudder to remember. Some were pleasant though.

A couple of weeks ago I let a man at the mall demonstrate a ceramic hair straitener on my hair, and he must of had the thing to hot, since it made my hair smell burnt, and I was sitting at my pc trying to analize the smell, and then it came to me. It smelled burnt, like when we were younger and we'd curl our hair, and it'd have that weird "crispy smell" to it.

Some profile pics require eye bleach & brain bleach.....

Repressed memories suck. I get weird reactions to mine, I'll suddenly start cursing at random and scare the people around me.

How far would one need to stick the pencil up ones nose to erase something?

BrokenSaint -> RE: repressed memories (10/19/2010 11:39:05 AM)

About an inch past when you hear a crunch.

How morbidly funny.

I hear you, sexyred1.  Well, not so much scrubbed spotless but rather undo some past from myself.  But then a friend would tell me, "Then you wouldn't be the you we know today."  Yeah, well, maybe I'll be an upgrade of the me today, right?  Lol!  Who knows.

CynthiaWVirginia -> RE: repressed memories (10/19/2010 12:26:20 PM)

Yes, itsmeinLV, I get flashbacks occasionally.  Ugly memories seem to be linked to things like...the smell of a cologne, a taste, visual or tactile things.

I would love to wash my brains out and make everything disappear but it doesn't work that way and even years of therapy doesn't erase it all.

One of my therapists helped a little by telling me to remember the incident...but add my present self into the scene and intervene.  If I were you, I'd buy another mochi, let the scene unfold...and then tear into the memory to make it lose power over you.  It works for me.  ;)

If it is ugly, sometimes our mind chooses to lock it away until we are more able to handle it...and yes, I haaaaate it when my mind decides it's time for me to handle some unfinished business.

Next time when you get that flashback, your adult self can jam that mochi stick...somewhere...and imagine the ambulance coming to pick him up off the curb. [;)]

Then there are the tabloid newspaper headflines to imagine...and the hospital staff seeing his problem...  Daydreams are not just for kids. [:D]

I am not a shrink...I've never known one who would advise getting a punching bag with a pic of someone from the past and just venting all your ugly feelings onto the punching bag until the last drop of energy leaves your body...while telling the universe what an evil rat b*stard someone was.   The Japanese did something like this for their workers though.  Had a room with dummies with faces like bosses and the employees were given something to beat the tar out of them so they would vent and be at peace when they went back to work.  That's what I read years ago...and it made me smile.

It takes every ounce of will I have to repress memories of really bad blowjobs.

BrokenSaint -> RE: repressed memories (10/19/2010 1:28:59 PM)

Pretty sure bad blowjobs qualify as war crimes.

To begin, I want to applaud you for sharing as you did. What you described to have experienced as a 7 year old indeed is beyond what any 7 year old should ever have to experience. This demented man who behaved as you described has no power to take away what is yours unless you allow him so.

What you describe is not at all only common to your experience. There are countless people who have survived similar and worse scenarios. I encourage you to reach out for help in talking with a professional in your area, if you need to talk further. No shame whatsoever if you choose to talk with a professional.

Thank you for being brave and sharing. Hopefully you will one day reclaim your love for Mochi Sweets on a Stick. You have every right to do so!

Take very good care of you!

I don't believe in repressed memories, I think they are fantasies that occur spontaneously

thornhappy -> RE: repressed memories (10/19/2010 5:34:55 PM)

Care's needed if you seek a counselor for repressed memories.  People found that the memories could be easily planted.  Just something weird about how our brains work.

Exactly. That was what made the film so philosophically interesting; the question of should you remember a painful experience and learn from it and try to go on or should you scrub your mind of anything painful, and in the process, never remember anything good that happened from the relationship.

Your friend is correct; we would most likely be quite different people without the sum of our collective experiences.

But some things seem determined to remain actively embedded in my mind and I would rather forget, or at least, not feel the negative emotions associated with them. To remember with just objectivity instead of emotions would work for me.

My mum keeps warning me that old age will do what therapy cannot. I think  she's right. Now, where the hell are my keys......

That was extremely weird.
