Feeling suicidal, really suicidal, isn't something that an outsider can really understand. It has it's own logic. You have to be there.

I once wrote an essay on the subject that I'd be happy to share if anyone wants to PM me - I'm in the process of slowly polishing it for publication, so it won't be posted here.

Eeryone's situation is unique to them,. we all have our interpreetation on it.

My dad was in his early 80's and had to go to the nursing home for cares. It was highly unlikely he would ever be able to go back to living independently even with services. He was mentally very much there and had the usual assortment of physical ails for someone in his age group. He had nothing terminal or excruiating in pain. He became very despondant and wanted to 'die'. I can still hear his cries. Fortunately, a short course of an antidepressant, some TLC and a bit of time changed his mind. I sure as hell wouldn't have wanted someone helping to 'off'' him or allowing him to do it. It was a transient thing that he was able to find his way through.

Conversely, my mother made it through surgery for colon cancer but developed an incisional infection that just started a casscade of effects. She became very depressed and wanted to stop everything. She was tired of it and wanted to die. She elected hospice. (Yes, I know it is not suicide per se)

There's no pat answer.

Fifteen years ago today, my father succeeded in taking his life on his third attempt. He was a Vietnam vet with PTSD, a sufferer of anxiety and depression and an alcoholic who was deserted by a wife who didn't understand or appreciate him. I hope that he felt only relief as he slipped into unconsciousness. I wish I had him back, but not in the state in which he was suffering.

Umm.  I am sorry if I opened up anyones pain here.  That was not my intention.

HUGS to all who need them.

I'm ok. I hope everybody else is. I just want everybody to be willing to stand up and defend those who are hurting, those who are bullied, those who are hopeless. Suicide is a viable option for the terminally-ill, but let's be there to save those whose bodies will recover if only their emotional suffering can be alleviated.

I believe that this statement is often (but not always) true:

"Suicide is not chosen; it happens when pain exceeds resources for coping with pain."

I'd be inclined to agree with this. Very sane people could be pushed to suicide if pain (or the threat of pain) exceeds the ability to cope. Extreme examples would be people lost at sea, or in some other unbearable predicament. And a sudden trauma to the psyche could tip the balance even in people who are not clinically depressed.

I believe in personal choices. Suicide is one of those choices. I do not believe everyone who commits suicide is mentally ill.

Some people are just not meant to be happy so suicide is quite possibly the best alternative, rather than constant struggle.

The only bad thing about suicide is those who care for you (if indeed anyone does) will be upset for a while and if you fail at the suicide attempt and end up paralyzed or some other horror.

Sometimes life is too painful so it is not hard to understand why suicide would be a choice.

Suicide for many is an act to end suffering and pain. It is the hope to put the end to all the stuff going on in ones life. Most people who commit suicide rarely talk about it- they just do it and it is at that point- they leave letters or notes or texts. Others who give signs of being suicidal can be helped if connected the the right professionals. Pain comes in so many shapes and sizes. What is small and tiny for some is a huge mountain for others. I have known friends, friends of brothers and sisters, uncles, mothers, and aunts who have killed themselves. Everyone asks the same question, "Why?" Even if they left a note- the note is not enough.

I do believe some do change their mind. Often it is usually too late. The young man who jumped from the GWB probably had a lot of thoughts. Most suicides are planned so he had to be thinking about this for awhile. The sad situation that pushed him over the edge- just sealed his fate for completing it.
