What I've learned ... from teaching science and observing people in everyday life as well as from involvement in bdsm ... is that common sense (or we call it gumption too) just isn't common anymore. Neither is the notion of consequences. Kids just don't seem to be exposed to the idea of "If ... then" eg "If you play with matches then you'll start a fire that will damage things and hurt people". A classic everyday life case was the 2 apprentices who were building our patio some years ago. The boss told them to cut the metal in the patio area which had a stone floor. Unfortunately he didn't spell out WHY they should do it there, he later said he expected them to have the gumption! They didn't ... they decided it was easier to cut the lengths outside where they'd been delivered ... and were ever so surprised when they set fire to the tinder dry grass which burned SO fast! Luckily they were able to just put it out before it got into the bushland on the property which would have gone up big time and threatened the house. They said they'd had no idea that sparks like that could cause a fire. Like d'oh! Why are they so clueless? I put a chunk of the blame on the nanny society we have created, including 'helicopter parents' who seek to protect their children from everything. Kids don't get to experiment and make their own mistakes. They don't get to be warned of the consequences, do it anyway and then suffer the consequences! Sure, there are things they shouldn't learn that way, but we don't let them learn the not-too-dangerous things that way either. And while I'm not against electronic games per se, I don't think kids should spend so much time playing them (where there aren't consequences) and not spend enough time out in the real world where there are. So without a good grounding in common sense, and understanding that actions have consequences ... is it any wonder that they make so many fundamental mistakes when they come to bdsm? Thanks LP for an interesting thread. Maam Jay aka violet[A]
