If you want to have a better idea of where someone really is, two data points with distance and find a program that will draw a circle around the center zip code points at that distance. Where they overlap is the location. To be very certain, use three zip codes. That is just simple triangulation.

So CM has a feature that enables you to triangulate the postcode of any user in the US. Great. Fantastic. Totally safe and innocuous and not at all open to abuse.

ETA: I'm just glad there's no English equivalent.

Don't worry folks, it doesn't work that way. The zip code location is always the center of the zip code area. You will never get closer than the center. You have to use distance from their physical location to pinpoint them.

On a related note, I've noticed over the years that a lot of times people in the UK end up listed as Canadians, and vice versa. Going into settings and changing it works, but....how come it happens in the first place?

That may be because the British and Canadian postal codes are mirror images of each other. Letter/number/letter number/letter/number for one and number/letter/number letter/number/letter for the other. Or it could be a mistake in the programming.

Be well....

Yeah, it's just been pointed out to me by several people that US zipcode areas are a lot bigger than their UK counterparts. (Sorry, didn't get much sleep last night, wasn't thinking particularly straight. This is my embarrassed face.)

I thought it was a distance from your MacGuffies, which is gonna make any object in any mirror closer than it appears.

CM has a glitch in their search by distance function.
I live in Mississippi. If I set the interface to show profiles within 100 miles of me; I get to see local profiles and also profiles in areas of Alaska.

Has to be by zipcode. Curiously, when i moved and changed zip code, the CM distances shown in profiles are still based on my former zipcode. i have tried a number of times to change the zipcode in my profile but it didn't help.

I am often perplexed by profiles that view me/email me on the other side. They will have their location as being in New York, or some other outlandishly far away place, yet when you look at the "distance" it will say something like "1 mile". It just made me wonder, how is distance calculated? Is it based upon ISP addy? Or is it based on the zip code we provide when we sign up for a profile. I am really curious to know.

Julia, it's only about 2,800 miles from where you are to Myrtle Beach, SC.

Change the zip code on the "My account" tab.

The users you see from outside your area may not have entered their zip code correctly.

Or have not updated their zipcode when they moved, also the zipcode distances are estimates, usually its about 5 to 10 miles more.
