I have tried everything I can think of to put my list of favorites, urls, onto a document.

I've got ones that were desktop icons done, one at a time, by clicking on the site the copying and pasting. It's been two days now and I'm turning into a zombie...there has got to be a better way.

WindowsME keyboard stayed fried. I'm using On-Screen Keyboard via mouse clicks and my wrist feels on fire.

My plan is not to locate another ancient but functional keyboard (knocks on wood), but store some things on floppies AND send same info to my yahoo email addy just in case.

Fingers are very sore tonight from (I still can't believe I did this and...seem to have succeeded) installing a "power source" thingy (looked like technicolor spaghetti spewing from a metal box) into my old XP. The lights come on now, but I have to finish that dratted favorites list before I unplug this machine and remove it, then set up the other one.

If I have to keep doing it the slow way, I'm looking at two more days because pages take so long to load and it throws fits and freezes up often. If anyone knows...please do not leave out even one tiny step or I'll scr*w it up somehow.

Thanks in advance.

First, whatever you use a desktop icon to get to, get to each site and "add to favorites" in internet explorer. Wherever anything is online, make sure it is in the favorites list in IE.

Open windows explorer and navigate to c:\documents and settings. One of the subdirectories is the one in use (users). Under that somewhere is "favorites". They should all be there.

All of them should not be that big, all they are, are URLs and titles, all text. From there you can copy them to a floppy, zip drive, attach the whole folder to an email or whatever you want.

Then you do the same thing on any PC using IE and just copy all the files to the same favorites folder and they all show up when you click favorites. The only hitch is making sure you have the right user under documents and settings. Seems like there are always three of them for some reason. But then each one has it's own my documents as well, so between the existing favorites and the documents you should be able to figure out which one the PC is using.

No keyboard required. Even though you might use the shift key to select them all for copying to whatever, you don't even need to do that. Just go up to edit and down to select all. Then it is just a matter of dragging them all to wherever you want to put them.

Another thinng I usually do is to put a shortcut on the desktop to windows explorer. It allows you to have more than one instance of it running which helps a whole lot (when dealing with gigs of downloaded music BTW). (Size the windows to a half screen)

Now there is one hitch - if you intend to copy this to the same drive, when you drag you hold down the Ctrl key. There is a way with the mouse, but I don't know it. If you do not use the Ctrl key or whatever other means it will just move the files. This is not true if it's another drive, like a flash drive or burning a CD.

The main trick about PCs is to learn how to use windows explorer, which is actually a newer version of filemanager in the old windows 3. Back then you had to know it, now it is largely forgotten. However, forcing it to copy the files rather than moving them probably has something to do with a right click of the mouse.

Actually, my question at this point is WHY ? If this PC is newer and better, and the only problem is the keyboard there are used computer shops out there that should sell used keyboards for like five or ten bucks. And if it is plug compatible, why not just take the keyboard from the older PC and hook it up to the newer PC ? Don't let them tell you any different, if it will plug in, it will work.

Termy, thanks. $5? I didn't know. Went to Staples a few days ago and keyboard prices almost gave me a heart attack.

I bought this old girl at a no kill animal shelter for $25 just so when my phone co. lost it's signal briefly, I wouldn't have to make them send someone with a laptop to "reconfigure" my modem/router/thingy so our WII could go online.

This has damaged memory places, has an old browser I can't update, and it's incompatibility with CM's mailroom gives me an apostrophe glitch. I have to substitute * or get ' tossed into my words. She cannot get the newer version of Adobe Flash Player so I haven't been able to access the chatrooms in forever. My computer cannot find some links online, or can't read them.

I cannot even watch Youtube(?) or download AVG. The McAfee I have that keeps updating...only seems to look for updates through '95. My girl probably has lots of viral nasties I can't get rid of right now. If I can burn a copy of several things from my XP and download them to WindowsME... I won't throw this away, just stuff her in the basement until I figure out what to do. Ideal scenario... transform her into an offline only Windows '95 or '98, as I have School prgrams that will only play on those...and on this monster if it had more memory. (No, I don't know how to add more memory so I can play my beloved Oregon Trail version 3.)

I will try to do as you suggest, but you lost me at...
Open windows explorer and navigate to c:\documents and settings. One of the subdirectories is the one in use (users). Under that somewhere is "favorites". They should all be there.

To find Favorites, I look to the top of an internet window. To see something like settings, I do this:
Start
Settings

For documents:
Start
Documents

I've tried left clicking, later tried right clicking for options. Did the same within an internet window after I accessed Favorites.

I will TRY but you might have to re-explain...as you would to a kindergartener...who's in special ed. Or a chimp.

I'm not a computer geek; it's a MIRACLE I got that power source in, so don't let that fool you into thinking I know anything. I labeled everything before unplugging each thing, with sticky white freezer labels at both areas, the innies and outies. One thing I plugged into was a motherboard...I wouldn't be able to identify the doohicky if it grew teeth and bit me. I compared the to power sources, found the right ones, marked them with metallic nail polish instead of paper, dots like dice from 1-5, then connected to their corresponding number. All sticky paper in tower was removed and replaced with nail polish dots.

<monkey waves her banana in the air> See how computer literate I am? I am sooooo frustrated. <crosses eyes>

In the event Termy isnt around....Windows Explorer is not the same as Internet Explorer.
It is built in to most window based operating systems. You can find it most likely by going to Start - Programs - Accessories. One you find it, you can right click and save it as a shortcut on the desktop.

Then what he means is, open Windows Explorer up, and you will have a bunch of folders to choose to explore.
The collection of Interner Explorer favorites is most likely stored in the folder he mentioned.

Best of luck! You can doooooooo this!

The apostrophe glitch isn't just you. It is a CM issue and not a you problem.

Walmart generally has decent prices on replacement ketboards (for $10 -$15 or so) IF you can't find a used one.

Malwarebytes' antimalware and Lavasoft Ad-aware programs can both get rid of pesky programs and they are free.

Termy, I want to do both of these:

quote:

From there you can copy them to a floppy, attach the whole folder to an email.

How do I go from having my Favorites list before my eyes and actually doing this? Left mouse click? Right click? Of choices, I see Add and Organize.

Edited after seeing poise and angelicaJ's posts.

Thank you both, I'll try all that...when I get back from taking mom shopping.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate all the help.

Trying to get my carpal tunnel to simmer down from all that mouse clicking I've been doing this week, but my wrist still feels like it's on fire. The solution to my keyboard problem was downstairs with my son's WII. Though two other keyboards didn't work...one had the wrong plug in and another one my computer wouldn't recognise...the wireless one I bought a year or two ago to use on my son's WII worked fine. I thought it was too high tech for this ancient dinosaur of a ME and my son had to get the bright idea to try it out. I was playing Pokemon Rumble on the WII and my son wanted to go looking at eBay...so I told him to go upstairs and use the computer, lol. He took one look at the on-screen keyboard and mouse clicking and said frack that, and went for the keyboard. Thank goodness for laziness, it can be the mother of invention. It is so wonderful to be able to type my usual 47 WPM instead of pecking everything out with a finger and a mouse.

I will try to find those sites angelicaJ mentioned to see if they can work when my Spybot can't...I have to download something else for that Spybot to work better or be able to update, and this machine cannot locate the site to download anything.

I tried the Start, Programs, Accessories thing but could not find Favorites anywhere. Termy spent a long time on the phone talking me through saving my favorites to a floppy (monkey noises echo in the background, lol). Thanks, Termy.

mnottertail...<remember those monkey noises>...I couldn't find "file" anywhere, so I stalled at the very beginning of your instructions.

SpiritedRadiance, thanks. Sounds scary to do something I won't have the ability to undo and I might run to Termy for help over the phone, lol.

Right now I cannot think well enough to try out many new things, as my brain is kinda broken. I have PTSD and panic attacks, and the faucet on my panic attacks got twisted harshly this week and won't stop dripping for a while. Probably a month or two. As well as keyboard problems, my brakes went completely out on me this past week and I was going down a sharp hill. As fast as I could scream to my son, "WE HAVE NO BRAKES!" we went from 10 mph to 35 mph. Nowhere to pull over. We are okay because using the parking break like go-cart brakes and then popping her into lowest gear...and guardian angels keeping animals and people and cars from appearing in front of us...got us safely down the hill and into a church parking lot. It was the master cylinder, which meant that not only did the brakes disappear but the gas revved.

Also, neighborb*tch phoned me and screamed abuses for a while. No matter what she does, there is no way in H*** I am getting into a fight with a woman who is totally blind. It pushed my buttons though because last time she went off on me (btw, our kids are friends, she and I are not), some of my cats disappeared, my minivan's tires kept going flat, and police kept coming to my house over my grass getting too shaggy. Her being forced to go into anger management classes didn't help, neither did a year seeing a shrink while having only supervised visitation with her son. With a neighbor who is psycho I would stand half a chance, but a BLIND psycho?

Someone from CollarMe came and fixed my master cylinder and all I had to do was buy the part...there are some very sweet people here. I needed my car to drive down to a town I used to live in, to see a friend who is losing everything. The family business was taken by the bank, her car doesn't work, and all utilities are being cut off, and she is losing her house. I have been trying to get her some home help jobs and supplies and help from agencies. She will be okay, as they are planning on moving into her son's girlfriend's mother's house. Anyway, her ex hubby was there while we visited. He was drunk as a skunk and a total asshat the entire time. My friend's face has aged 20 years in the past 2...because of him, and his drinking is the reason they lost their business. He did the bookwork and also messed her out of her unemployment insurance. He was there because he was visiting his son, and he picked at her the entire time and tried that shiite with me. It was all I could do not to rip his testicles off and choke him to death with them.

All of this shiite came to a head this past week! Sheesh.

So...right now, my brain is not working well until I can get my panic attacks under control. I feel zoned out, unable to mess with my XP some more. Termy, I will try doing what you said in your c-mail letter but right now I wouldn't know a computer battery if it bit me on the arse...and if I did know, I would probably take it out and stare at it for hours as if it contained the secrets of the universe. I will look in some books or online or something until I feel I can possibly recognise it. Thanks bunches, and yeah, I will be phoning you soon.

This past week sucked and I cannot wait for payday...spending money always makes me feel better, even if it is only dropping a hundred or so on groceries.

The first. Must. Survive. Till. The. First. I'll be fine by then, lol.

Now I'll try to locate those malware sites.

mnottertail, I found it under file and not under tools. I saw import/export. I usually only look way up there on the browser thingy for favorites so I didn't notice file.

*******************
angelicaJ,
I tried what you said. :( Saving those sites for whenever I get a new computer or else fix up my old XP.

Lavasoft Ad-aware site said, "Setup requires at least Windows 2000."

Malwarebytes' antimalware site said, "Internet Explorer cannot download mbam-setup-1.46exe from www.filescrunch.com. Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later."

That last part is what happened when I tried to download AVG and later on Adobe Flash Player, as well as several other things. This baby is just...going to have a very short lifespan. I don't know if it is because she is a ME, or because...someone dropped her on her head and she's just out of sorts ever since.

I'll have to write down the list of computer keyboards my Add Hardware will allow me to use, and if I cannot find one of these at Walmart, I'll check out computer repair shops. I only know of one, in another nearby city, lol. Tiny towns, gotta love 'em.
