I do not understand all the bellyaching about the salaries and amount of money made in the NFL.  Fans are the ones supporting it, that is the reason for all of the money.  Don't blame the owners and players for the situation.  This reminds me of people hating the Yankees because they are in a system that allows them to field an outstanding team.

Katy, don't forget that many stadiums are paid for by the local sales taxes.  Here in Denver, we had to pay an extra tax to build the Broncos a new stadium.  Whereupon they sold the naming rights to Invesco.

Edited to add:  Ted Turner bought the Braves because he wanted to, and AFAIK never considered it a for-profit venture.  But the other team owners are in it to see how much they can get in parking fees, concession fees, ticket sales, tax breaks, etc.  No love for the game.

Very true Steven. I find it funny that Randy Lerner owns the Browns, when his dad, Al, helped the traitor move the team to Baltimore, and owned the team when they came back.

I am not sure that all owners in the NFL are not lovers of the game.  I think there are probably some who love the game and have for generations.  There are many people in the corporate world, making good money who are not in love with their career.

About the taxes, I can understand the complaint, I would be annoyed about it, although there are benefits to the city as far as increased visitors and revenue from fans on game day.

The thing about the major sports leagues is that the butts in the seats really don't matter all that much, it's the television deals that really finance these sports. Once ratings start to decline significantly, then the leages will really be in trouble financially.

I heard that all four US leagues have their collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) coming up next year.  The talking head on the tv/radio program I was listening to said that he felt there was a really good chance two of the leagues (NFL, NBA, NHL or MLB) woiuld have serious labor stoppages.

As I've gotten older, sports have become less importnat to me, but I still love them. Currently my favorite sports to watch are college Fb and BB, then NHL and  EPL and Champions league soccer. I'll be fine if the NFL goes on strike or whatever. I just don't enjoy the type of football playted in the NFL as much as i do college. I could watch pretty much any two college teams play and enjoy the game, with the NFL, not so much.

Do you follow the Pirates? I am astounded that baseball hasn't lost more fan interest because the league is so flawed.

I go to one Pirates game per season.  I do not follow them.  At PNC Park, the game is incidental to the overall experience.  I can not talk myself into the expenditure of buying tickets for a Steeler game.

Even the Green Bay Packers used some taxpayer money to update Lambeau Field a few years ago. In this case and some others it is money well spent. Tourists come to Green Bay year round because of the Packers. The city of Green Bay would be nothing without the Packers being there.

the new cowboys stadium cost over a billion dollars to build. About half of that came from the taxpayers and the NFL. The only reason Jerry Jones built it was to satisfy his ego. This is also the cheap bastard who built a sub-par practice space that collapsed during high winds a couple years back. Thats just excessive to me.

I heard about this on NPR. They were talking lockout. The owners are reluctant to disclose their financial information, they don't want anyone to know just how much money they're taking in, and the players union hasn't shot down any rumours of a strike. But  they'll find out the hard way that a player's strike will do to the NFL the same thing it did to MLB.
There was  a lot of anger over that among baseball fans. We still haven't forgotten it. It's like the one time you get a rotten olive in your martini. Never happens again, but the bad taste is still in your mouth.

Yeah, there was a lot of anger and disgust at the time... even lots of  pledges to abandon baseball altogether but show me in concrete terms how MLB really suffered from the strike of 1994. I mean in the form of ticket sales and merchandise sales, not some unmeasurable fallout like 'fan anger'. For every fan who deserted the game it seems there was at least one waiting in the wings to take their seat. Show me any real lasting ill effect in 2010 from the strike of 1994. There isn't any. There are certain things people will not turns their backs on. Alcohol, cigarettes and their favorite professional sports team. Pussy doesn't even belong on that list.

You forget that baseball was about to head down the crapper in 1996, and 97, then came 1998 and the Mac Gwire - Sosa home run race and those guys SAVED THE SPORT FROM ITSELF.

Thing about the NFL is,  before one ticket is sold, before one parking place is paid for, before one concession is sold, the TV money pays for everything, and EVERY CLUB is in the black including salaries paid, before the season starts.

Think about it this way Norman Braman (former Eagles owner) bought the team for 65 Million in the 80's when he sold to Jeffrie Lurie, about 13 years later, he tripled his money and sold for 195 Million, if Lurie were to sell today he would get in the neighborhood of 850 to 950 Million, and the Eagles are not the only franchise to appreciate in value like that.

Sportingly,
Some Knucklehead in NJ
