Couldn't cope, had to stop watching a third of the way through.

Apparently I'm still traumatised by the unsafe high-wire I did when I was eleven.

Two things .....

a) I wish (after having spent all that time) they would at least say what they were doing once they got up there

b) I'm assuming that there was a problem that caused them to do the climb. I would hope it's not a daily thing where you do the climb, then hang out for a while.

The last station I worked for, our tower was 1200 ft.

No one working for a station is climbing the tower.  Even if there was someone on the staff qualified to do the climb the station's insurance would never cover it.  There are tower crews you call when you need something done.

It's a big deal if that light goes out.  You have to call the FCC and the FAA then you have only so long fix it or explain why you haven't.

Why did I have an urge to go base jumping?

I know from talking to linemen from utility companies and a high school buddy that owns a transmitter maintenance company that usually the only reason to climb the tall towers is to replace the bulbs in the aircraft beacons. The fixtures usually hold several bulbs and can be shifted to a new bulb from the ground so you never lose the beacon. But, at some point someone has to go up and put in a new bulb. Since they were stopped at the beacon assembly, I have a feeling that is what they are doing. The only other reason to go up there would be to reconfigure and antenna or replace parts that were weather damaged.

I think heights is the only thing I'm scared of.

I simply cannot convince my brain to ignore all that potential energy.

We used to joke that those guys are certifiable, but I've worked with a guy who did that when he was younger and servicing antennas.

Better him than me!!  Rooftops were enough fun!

dear lord, it's only halfway through the video and i had to turn it off. heights are a serious hard limit for me, worked in a 42 story office tower and got violently ill during strong wind gusts that made the building sway. no thanks!

Well, I can emotionally dissociate myself from it enough that I watched the whole thing.
But it would be really dangerous for me to try it because I wouldn't be able to focus.

GT,

I have already sent this out to several friends.  Everybody

NOT ENOUGH!!!

But, you forget the business management attitude; "Why should we pay high dollar just to change lightbulbs. Any idiot can do that."

I don't think you wanna crack your skull if your tethered and slip.

I don't have a fear of heights, but there's no way in hell I'd do that job.

GT,
From this description alone... I love that you provided it, because since I have an issue with step-stools , now I know not to watch.

There is no amount of money, beer, anything in the world to get me to do that. The only thing that stops me from completely builing a house is that I am acrophobic and can't do the roof. I guess I could on a flat roof on a ranch style house but that's about it. In fact I'm glad I have the kind of gutter that don't need to be cleaned.

The commentary was, well ......

"Now the tricky part" Right.

"Only sixty feet to the top" Uh huh.

"You can see fifty five miles to the horizon" Damn, that's about an hour drive (out to the farm ! )

"Check on weather conditons" That makes sense, he is about as close to weather conditions as it gets.

Betcha that guy makes goooood money. I guess on the insurance it wouldn't be injury or death, just death. Let's see here, at 32 feet per second per second....... my mental math machine just overloaded.

<sarcasm>THANKS ALOT</sarcasm>, now how am I supposed to bitch about sitting on the floor at work ?
