IntenseMaster3 -> Quick Question (Profiles & Your Identity) (9/16/2010 4:40:29 PM)

Regarding pics on CM and fake/imposter profiles... is this mainly with women?
Have any men had problems with this issue?

It can happen anywhere, on any site, but seems to be a little rampant here (though it is on other sites as well), so I was just wondering if this was happening with predominantly female profiles, and if there was ever really a concern amongst men of ever having your picture/identity here used falsely.

Frustrating to see it so rampant around, and seems to be a much bigger problem with women, though sometimes it concerns me for sake of "privacy" (to some degree; nothing on the net is ever "private", but you get me) etc. which is more frustrating due to many people who wont respond if you don't have a pic, sometimes because they might think that YOU aren't for real.

~Fast Reply~

I honestly haven't had any issues with false profiles - or at least not that I have known were false . I suppose my cynical nature and distrust is too much for a user with a false account to waste more than a few e-mails on me. I get HNGs all the time though.

As far as I know, men are targeted by the fakes, so they're almost all straight women, although I have seen some fake les profiles.

Why would someone use my pics or words without my permission?  FFS, you can get pics of male porn stars online!

Wolf2Bear -> RE: Quick Question (Profiles & Your Identity) (9/16/2010 4:53:12 PM)

There's been only once where I got a mail from a person who had a profile and photo which indicated they were male yet signed the message with a female's name that was also part of their yahoo email. Consequently it was deleted. Rarely do I get mail from women and the few I had gotten were what I consider the female version of a HNG.  Like Aqua, I am cynical enough to know that no person who has a lick of sense will message a total stranger and profess instant servitude and an instant relationship!

*FAKES THREAD!* You're all fake! Fakeness everywhere!

Wait, lemme type up something with em dashes for good measure.
The summer breeze — knowing it's being chased away — made one last effort to comfort me before the winter chill came to sap all my warmth.

P.S. I dunno, I creatively solved the problem by putting up a picture of me stylized in a way that you can't really tell anything besides a few shapes. Why don't you include pictures of yourself in the messages you send?
I think most people don't complain about fakes because they have no desire to invest much into it before they actually meet the person.
The other thing is "fakes" don't have much patience.

dreamerdreaming -> RE: Quick Question (Profiles & Your Identity) (9/16/2010 5:01:56 PM)

There are plenty of scammers who will scam anyone at all who lets them. Who's to say what gender they are, or whether they target males or females more? Both males and females are subject to them, and the scammers may be of either gender.

They may or may not be the gender that they claim to be. But then, that goes for anyone else online, too. I'll bet scammers are trying to scam other scammers constantly- because they tend to just spam whomever shows as online at the moment.

poise -> RE: Quick Question (Profiles & Your Identity) (9/16/2010 5:14:31 PM)

I agree with dreamerdreaming as for never knowing what ones true gender could be.
I do think though, based on the amount of threads started by men complaining of scammers,
that the men here are more the target for the scammers than women are, and because of that,
most of the scammer profiles are females (even if its really a male behind it all)

edited to add...the photo in my profile is not of me lying poised and pretty with a flower on my belly,
but a representation of the type of photo I would post if I were to post one of myself.
Please submit your credit card info asap.

I've gotten several obviously fake requests from a couple of guys promising perfect servitude, loving relationship, etc. The profiles revealed they were all willing to relocate, and were from impoverished 3rd world countries.
Unfortunately, many of these scammers seem to be people desperately trying to escape poverty any way they can, male or female.

jujubeeMB -> RE: Quick Question (Profiles & Your Identity) (9/16/2010 5:17:17 PM)

I've only ever seen people steal female pics/profiles. You don't have to worry, OP, unless you look like Johnny Depp. And in that case, email me immediately [;)]

*shrugs* Twice now someone's stolen my picture... the forum avatar here.

mstrjx -> RE: Quick Question (Profiles & Your Identity) (9/16/2010 5:36:40 PM)

To answer the OP directly (as I understand it) ...

Yes, the problem is predominantly with female profiles.

I would venture to say that 80% of all of the 'new' female profiles (in whatever category) are not who/what they pretend to be.

I had one person insist I was using a picture from a certain actor. I just think they needed new glasses.

I ran across one profile witha picture that belonged to an acquaintance that is a lingerie model. I think her attorney had fun with that one chatting up the person and finding out where they were so they could serve a subpoena.

Faker/scammers....ahem.....people with fake profiles(lol) ..here on CM!  NEVER! NOT ONCE! And certainly NEVER on Sundays.
Oh! The very thought!

peppermint -> RE: Quick Question (Profiles & Your Identity) (9/16/2010 7:42:14 PM)

I've had males writing to me, offering spectacular jobs if only I will pay a small fee to them.  I've had males telling me that they are the heir of a fortune, and will share that fortune with me if only I will deposit their fortune in my bank account, keep a few million for me, and send them the rest via a money transfer that, of course, can not be traced.

Although it seems that most fraudulent accounts are female, there are many males looking to make a quick buck at your expense.  Basically, as far as I've seen, they are all pretty easy to spot if you use a bit of common sense.

I've heard that some of them live pretty nice lives.

LadyPact -> RE: Quick Question (Profiles & Your Identity) (9/16/2010 8:46:46 PM)

To the best of My knowledge, My pic hasn't been stolen for someone else to create a profile.  I do know that there have been a couple of cases where folks have been told they needed to change their avatar because the pic that they were using as their main profile pic was a picture of another person.  It was of an actor, model, or some such thing.  The person had to pull the avatar.

As for if there are fake profiles and if they are more often women than men, I couldn't tell you.  I'm not a big profile reader unless something has specifically sparked My interest to look at it.  I generally just converse with people from the forums.

I will say that all of the people that I have met from the site have not been fake.  Every last one of them was real.
