Status: offline 		To what extent do you shop mom and pops?
Today- I went to a mom and pops to get my eyes tested. I had an appointment with a large chain- then I thought I would get more attention and a less hectic bedside manner- if I picked a small place. I am pleased with how it went today. So my question is- to what extent do you keep your business local? Sometimes I will pay abit more to stay local. Not as much as I would wish to. Your thoughts?

I would, however all of our mom and pop shops cost more.  They are rude.  We started out thinking we'd be helping the local community.  Our one gas station in town was smacked hard by the state of NE by messing with the gas it sells.  Then ripping off everyone buying it. 

So, nope..not at all anymore.  The local bars will give you food poisoning.  You'd never want to see the kitchen in one of these small mom and pop shops. 

We used to think small town doctors would be better as well.  Problem is they aren't making the money larger town doctors are so we get the less qualified doctors for lack of a better term.  Then on top of paying your insurance and co-pays they also bill you.  Something the health insurance will tell you month after month is illegal.  Yet, other than ruining your credit what are you going to do?

then I do so on a regular basis.

Status: offline 		I shop exclusively at mom and pop stores, I think the last time I went into a store was a cvs at 3am because I needed to...they actually replaced the cashiers with machines you use yourself. You just scan it and do things yourself, they replaced the people who worked there that is just beyond me.

We do not have a locally owned grocer. Unless you count an Iowa based chain.  I have to make a special trip to purchase gas locally so generally don't. There isn't a locally owned shop for most household supplies like detergents, TP, etc. Horse feed and supplies is purchased through a Midwest chain store.

There is a locally owned, General Store type place, I buy some things from.......if they carry what I want.

Had the fascinating experience of going to watch my kid's football game, and when a friend of his dislocated his shoulder, my doctor was there giving advice to the trainer. As I know his wife just had a baby, he showed up just to be helpful in case of need. He's got a long time till it's one of his on the field.

Status: offline 		It all depends on what I am after. A few months back, a Mom and Pop grocery store was still in business. I would do a lot of my grocery shopping there, because I loved that they had what I wanted at really great prices. Now that its gone, I try to get fresh veggies from the stands, or neighbors near my or my mothers house (I LOVE living in the country like I do!!). And everything else comes from a Food Lion/Kroger/Walmart establishment. If I need something small like eggs, or bread, or chips or the like, I will hit one of 4 Mom and Pop stores in the area that is locally owned. It may be a dollar or two more, but it saves me a couple gallons of gas to do so.

Forgot to add that if I can get the meats from the local butcher shop, everything is purchased locally, with the exception of cleaning items.

Status: offline 		It depends. i like to go to independently owned restaurants and coffeeshops. The food and service is often better, but, then it depends on the shop. Sometimes it is worse. For bookstores, i go to Borders. They just have a much bigger selection, and often they're cheaper. When they have discounts you can get really good deals. i seldom shop for clothes.

P.S.- the best meal i ever had was out of this food mobile in the back of a junkyard. Best taco ever.

We do this as much as we can.  Although we really only have about 3 month's out of the year where we can buy fresh produce.
So, what I don't grow myself I seek out.

We have a turkey rancher about a mile from our house.  You can buy your thanksgiving turkey from him.  Premium price.  He openly tells you he purchases his turkeys from the midwest grocer frozen.  Thaws them out and sells them to you as home grown. 
Apparently growing your own turkeys cost too much money anymore so it is cheaper to dupe the public.  No idea how many people he tells what he really does.  Although he did tell us.

Status: offline 		I tried yesterday, to give the little grocery store another try.

I would love to be able to go there, because it is actually closer, I can walk, it's like 6 blocks away.

The problem is the loaf of bread I bought was expired. I bought a two liter there about a year ago, and didn't check the expiration date, and it was expired. I did check that this time, but didn't think to check the bread.

So, I have to drive all the way across town, (not walking distance), to go to Aldi's, Wal-Mart, or Schnucks, because I don't want to check the expiration dates on everything, and it makes we wonder what else might be happening if they can't keep old bread off the shelf.

So, if they go out of business, it will be there own fault, as I'd gladly have spent most of my grocery money there, but now, they will get little to none. I'm sure I'm not the only one that doesn't go there because of that.

Anyway, I might give them another chance a year from now.

Status: offline 		I eat at mom and pops type of food places during my lunch at work because they're actually cheaper. I used to shop at a mom and pop hardward store in the area until Home Depot moved into the area and they had to close their doors. The small hardware places was so much cheaper and I knew everyone on a first name basis and would stop in all the time. I was so very upset on their last day. I absolutely hate the useless Home Depot.

Status: offline 		I forgot about eating out.........I hate hate HATE chain owned restaurants and almost never eat at one. The exception being the rare trip (once or twice a year) to get my disgusting greasy KFC fix or a road trip where we get our nasty McD's breakfast biscuit fix.

And I totally understand the problems with shopping at a locally owned grocer. Twice in my life I've lived in or near a small town that each had a small, locally owned grocer. Not only were the prices nearly double, but the merchandise was often nasty. Just not worth it unless there was something you absolutely needed to finish a recipe or something.
