Hillwilliam -> RE: Viva La Revolución? (9/8/2010 7:10:02 PM)

Fidel Castro saying communism doesnt work is about as earth shattering as a HS math teacher saying that the sum of the cubes of the 2 legs of a right triangle is not equal to the square of the hypotenuse.

Been true for millenia. It just took some folks a while to figure it out.

That is interesting. I wonder if the quote feature is picking up his id because his post is still there, even if you have it hidden. I would think if that is the case, then it wouldn't pick up the right quote but it seems to. Maybe that is why people are having problems quoting lately.

GT3000 -> RE: Viva La Revolución? (9/8/2010 7:41:43 PM)

Well, having actually been to Cuba unlike most people here, I think I can say for certain that while this isn't earth-shatter news to anyone who actually paid attention to high school history. Fidel Castro isn't exactly well known for admitting the political system he help pioneer in Cuba isn't feasible. However, those who question the expertise of the medical facilities of Cuba need to do their research better. The ranking done by the World Health Organization (in 2000 and they have admitted to possibly never doing another due to the extensive complexity of the issue) placed Cuba at 39, with the U.S. at 37. Which to say the least, is troubling.

WHO's ranking: http://www.who.int/inf-pr-2000/en/pr2000-44.html

Could the average leftist even "get" such a memo?

Hopefully someone will send a memo to "the dog!"
They had a major conflagration in Detroit yesterday, did he have any comments?

No, we are too inferior to intellectual giants like you and Popeye.

Sometimes just reading the brilliance that you post causes my ears to bleed.

The level of discourse remains the same here I see.

Ron if you weren't such a lefty puke you would SEE there is no difference between Obama and Castro.

And no difference between yourself and a Cuban peasant.

Pssst!  I don't think he was agreeing with you.

Lefties have admired Cuba and its Medical system for decades.

Even Castro is admitting its crap so we get lefty posters trying to derail with a bunch of insults. Activity that used to be defined as "trollish".

I must have missed it, but I'm sure you can point it out.

Where in the article is there any mention of the Cuban health care system?

And of course this is where certain posters are going to try very hard to keep the thread about ANYTHING other than Fidel Castro saying communism doesn't work.

That's pretty funny if you read back through the posts, because it is Sanity derailing his own thread.

Here's the deal Rich...thinking people, whether liberal or conservative, are wondering what this thread has to do with anything here in the US. Since less than .5% of our population and maybe one of our elected officials identify as Communist or would support Soviet style Socialism here, then we are wondering what point Thomas and luckyduck are trying to make. This is the polite version of Ron's post.

First off, Brainia, don't try to drag me into your tent. The word "communism" may occupy great disfavor, but the ideals, principles, and even the propaganda are welded to liberalism in America. Rather than simply let the verbal denials roll on, I like to ask them why communism hasn't worked, and what in particular they don't like about it, to get the actual opinions flowing.

This man led an army to victorious revolution, led his country for decades, and is now saying what he believed in was wrong and had failed. I think that's worthy of discussion.

Jeffff -> RE: Viva La Revolución? (9/9/2010 4:32:58 AM)

Communism doesn't work for more reasons than I can type here. It's a sucker bet. It's an over reaction to some of the abuses of capitalism. It is an excuse for totalitarianism. Once you put people in charge with limited checks and balances the opportunity for abuse is to great to be ignored.

The History of Cuba makes for an interesting read. they had a relatively successful constitutional government until the 30's and the Great Depression. As in many places communism looked reasonable in the 30's.

At the time of the revolution, the Cuban people where living under the largely totalitarian government of Baptista. It made anything look better than that. When Castro ad the army over through him, it was easy to convince the people hat communism was they answer.

50 years later, everyone now knows it isn't.

I'd suggest that you try reading some Marx or Engels before trying to discuss communism: the above statement makes it perfectly clear that you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

At least one die-hard Leftist is willing to admit it -

quote:

Report: Castro says Cuban model doesn't work

HAVANA – Fidel Castro told a visiting American journalist that Cuba's communist economic model doesn't work, a rare comment on domestic affairs from a man who has conspicuously steered clear of local issues since stepping down four years ago.

The fact that things are not working efficiently on this cash-strapped Caribbean island is hardly news. Fidel's brother Raul, the country's president, has said the same thing repeatedly. But the blunt assessment by the father of Cuba's 1959 revolution is sure to raise eyebrows.

Jeffrey Goldberg, a national correspondent for The Atlantic magazine, asked if Cuba's economic system was still worth exporting to other countries, and Castro replied: "The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore" Goldberg wrote Wednesday in a post on his Atlantic blog.

Goldberg missed the key question which would be if Castro forsaw any other model that would be better for Cuba. Or if he felt Cuba would have faired better with equitable treatment by the US. Or at least not having been sanctioned and blockaded at every point.

Its an amazing development too, isnt it?

First there was Gorbachev, then Red China.

Now even old Fidel is fessing up to it!

The only ones left in denial are the hard line NK dictatorship and the Democratic party here in the United States.

yeah.....

why is that smoking anything, they are equivalent as likely as communism and liberalism are equivalent.

Lets review the facts:

Pro-Business backed to the hilt by it regardless, war, war, war. Total Belligerence and unfounded policy.  Forgot that they started the war that set the nations against them (1 being the prime mover)...

So, I would say if someone can trot out the bolded underlined asswipe in the original quote, then it is not more than a hop, skip and buttfuck to get there........

Why would a communist country need anything from a capitalist nation as the United States used to be? And whats the last time we blockaded them. Youre also overlooking the fact that Cuba was heavily subsidized by the Soviets for decades and I believe they still have a lot of sweetheart deals going on with the likes of Russia, Venezuela and Iran.

But that argument doesn't hold any water, since it could then be asked, what could a capitalist nation (like America) need from a communist country (like China)...then we have to examine such vexing issues as why we owe them such a great deal of money instead of the other way round....that sort of introspection does not fly in our politics, today.
