This is actually an issue?  I find it so much easier to say, "this is the munch I will be attending and I'll see you there".

SubPet715 -> RE: Travel money needed!!! (9/5/2010 9:09:35 AM)

I'd like to just wander forever like david banner, or quai chang cain, helping who I can learning about myself.

Thats the best way to travel, misunderstood, good hearted, lonely, a silent minority forever wandering...

I like train rides. I can sleep, eat, read and pretty much do whatever I wanted. I have a habit of getting lost because I have no sense of direction.

You can get a GPS.  Just sayin'.  I have a phone that has one built in...

GPS units lie. Lola took me miles and miles to the middle of nowhere when I was trying to get to a friends house. She 'recalculated' me into the desert...

I have a GPS in the car and in my phone. I once ended up on a dirt road near a cemetery in the middle of nowhere.
Never trust a GPS.

I found a fun way to deal with those needing travel money as I like road trips and do not drive. I offer to come to them by bus and bring the travel money and ride back with them. They actually argue about it, lol. I then block them.

Most of that stuff is scams anyway.
I just tell them I'll "reimburse them" when they get here. Of course they never take me up on it.
There were a lot of Russian scammers a few years ago and of course Nigerian scammers all the time; "I want to be your slave forever!" "Please send me $1,400 to come to you."
Yeah, "Me love you LONG time!"

Indeed...here a 12 mile trip for an ambulance crew ended into an 8 hour journey due to blindly following the GPS system...

I travel a lot for business and couldn't do without it, especially if I need an alternative route.  Paper maps are too hard to read while driving on the freeway and it's impossible to read them at night whilst driving.

I've been steered wrong by Mapquest and Google maps, so it's kind of "pick your poison".

pahunkboy -> RE: Travel money needed!!! (9/5/2010 12:29:19 PM)

GPS,

HA!

over reliance on teck which may or may not work- --    egads-  how often do I go ANYWHERE, let alone a new place?

Thorn, when I take a trip I just look in my map book and write down the route on a pad of paper.
"1.) Take rt. 95 South to Rt 10 in Jacksonville, Fla take exit 7"
"2.) Take Rt. 10 to Mobile, Ala....."

Do that and you'll never go wrong.
I'm taking a trip down to Misssisippi this month for a Navy ship's reunion and I'll do that and also study the route so I know it in my head beforehand.

thornhappy -> RE: Travel money needed!!! (9/5/2010 7:09:06 PM)

I've done that before and where you run into trouble is when you miss a turn and find yourself off-route, with a really ugly path to get back on-route.  For example, I was driving back into LA at 2am only to find that the interchange I was going to use was closed for overnight CalTrans work.  Stuff like that can ruin your evening! [:D]

Hopscotching around the DFW metroplex is no fun, even with a list of turns.  Some transitions make you jump across 3 lanes of traffic within 1/4 mile.

I've been on about 100 business trips in the last 7 years, have tried all types of navigation, and will go GPS everytime, with a preview on my mapset before I leave.  Call me a simply phart if ya will, but it works for me!

DFW is the pits. Mexico City is easier to get around. My ex was always going off to Yellowknife or Sydney or Halifax od whatever, and I always admired her ability to find her way to her meetings. Being a VP at PSFT and ORCL and NEOF and now with Lawson, she has all the latest hi-tech toys, but still...

My first time in Munich, before they opened Strauss airport, the old airport was east of the city, and there was an autobahn which went to within 3 KM or so of the city center, which is where our hotel was. I recall driving on a one way street, seeing exactly where it was I needed to go, and not being able to get there. Then finally finding undergound parking, finding the exit, and coming out in the basement of a department store, hauling our luggage past a fishtank-like case of brussels sprouts, and displays of cheeses and sausages, while getting the weirdest looks from people. Oktoberfest weekend. jetlagged and tired, we found our way to the Festival grounds. I got claustrophobic, and went on back. Hotel ahd some sidewalk tables, so (early PM) I started sipping some beer. By and by, I got buzzed. Got into a chat with a couple lorry drivers (in Spanish, what little we both knew). Went up to the loo to take a piss. Some middle-aged German queer followed me, and had the nerve to come over and make a pass whilst I was pissing. Asshole. I don't recall if I zipped up or not, but I chased that fuck out and down to the street, and somewhere I found some shit to throw at him. Disturbed my tranquility.

Travel can be a trip sometimes.

Be thankful it wasn't a deaf, mute, tapping slave.

damn you.... taptap...bitch

thornhappy -> RE: Travel money needed!!! (9/6/2010 9:36:56 AM)

I think the worst driving I've done is in downtown San Francisco.  I did service calls down there and drove a few times for personal business.  You really need a co-pilot down there!  Between all the navigation with the one-way streets, the homeless guys jaywalking against the lights, and the cabbies it's quite the experience.

Then there's Atlanta...where every street is Peachtree street with just a few minor tweaks to confuzzle the tourists!

Malkinius -> RE: Travel money needed!!! (9/7/2010 12:05:35 AM)

Greetings all....

I have had fun with them by saying I will be in a nearby town in a week or three and I can make time to come see them, talk to their Master/trainer/whomever in person. I have never heard from anyone I have done this with ever again. Now, if someone ever called me on it....who knows...I might show up. <grins>

Be well....

Malkinius

Of course not sophie.  It appears you have more sense, and more sense of direction, than a mute tapping slave.

Well, I don't know if I'd go THAT far. You may be giving me too much credit Cali! [;)]
