I sort of resent this whole topic if you don't mind. You know what a gang mentality is ? It differs only in certain aspects from the premises of the founding Fathers, one of whom reportedly said "If we don't hang together we shall surely hand separately". In a way a gang mentality could be seen as comradery, but it differs in intent. Instead of breaking loose from a remote tyrannical government the intent is now "We run these streets".
It exists in all strata of society and is not the individualism that the founding Fathers collectivized to achieve. Yes a gang was formed, but ad hoc to face a large foe, which was quite collectivized itself. It was the only way. And don't kid yourself, if not for oppressive taxes the revolutionary war may never have happenned. Later, as power corrupts, that gang started doing exactly the same thing to some southern states which is one of the chief reasons another gang was formed - known as the Confederate army.
[for brevity's sake only I will use the word 'mafia']
A mafia is nothing but an older gang. You have your mechanics, your bean counters and a few others, as well as a "boss". And not all of these groups were on the same side. A mafia might want to carry out a hit, and it must be done. They never wanted anyone to get caught in the crossfire, but if it happenned too bad. It was the mechanic's job to get away with it at all costs because he might be a known associate of the boss. Eventually mollochs came to power and they got nasty. Later this type of folk got into government, speaking of which.......
Can you think of police training as an initiation rite ? What are the police ? When faced with any type of danger the first thing they do is to get on the radio. Now I am not stupid, we need this. When you have a hostage situation you need enough people to surround the area so the assailant cannot escape with the hostage, and generally they will call in a sniper if all else fails. But what of the other side of the coin ? Search your memory banks for the name Rodney King. When was the last time you saw an officer go toe to toe with an unrestrained suspect ? Motives are not quite as altruistic in such a case are they ?
Look at major media, they always seem to be on the same page don't they ? Well a long time ago we had diverse opinions presented. Just like the mafia would "buy in" to busineses, it only differs in the type of initiation. Street gangs will have rites just like a frat hazing, only a bit more severe (sometimes). To get into the media racket the initiation is to have an audience. If the outlet is on the public market, big money can and does force their way in.
Forming gangs is just a human throwback akin to animals running in packs, and the lone wolf be damned. What of those of us who value our independence, who are not willing to run with a gang ? Talk about not fair. Now these punks are whining because there is a bigger gang coming for them ? Hideous examples of homosapiens in my opinion.
The third side of the coin - I doubt Hitler killed even one Jew, he had others do it for him. Look where that got him. Now these punks are whining because the bigger gang is threatening to use big boy weapons on them, aka the RICO act or something similar ?
Give me a break.
What's more that police chief may find that the gangs will unite, and if that happens this is the most counterproductive move there could be. Remember "Divide and conquer" ?.
