I've been following my nerdy pursuits and searching for more. I read 'Nickel and Dimed' not too long ago. Just watched 'Maxxed Out', a documentary focusing on the who-what-when-where-why-and-how of credit card debt. Now I'm watching something about WalMart's wage practices. Financial/social topics like these are interesting me lately and I'd love to keep learning.... Any suggestions for books, sites, or films? [:)] Thanks!

Well it's likely more propaganda but still interesting, Michael Moores' books and Kevin Trudeaus' books about BigPharm. When I have a moment I enjoy catching late night Docs on Direct TV it's called the DOC channel. Also Current TV has great Docs as well. And Link televison is swell. One of those above, many moons ago I watched how the Mardi Gras beads are made for US revellers in an Asian country and the workers slave for 22 cents a day. The crew went back and showed the workers (whose whole goal all their life was to get a job at the local factory) the debauchery of Mardi Gras and the amount of US dollars we paid for the trinkets...and how they ended up on the street after the Big Party in a gutter... Another book I enjoyed was Death By SuperMarket. I followed a thread here and just purchased Real Food and Why We Need to Eat It. I have not got into yet but will after Labor Day holiday... Netflix has some excellent documentaries that one can watch online. Capitalism: A Love Story (M Moore) Food, Inc. The Future of Food King Korn Jesus Camp Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price Grass (history of MJ) It Might Get Loud (Jimmy Page, the Edge, and Jack White) Born Rich The Cove (mass murder of Dolphins in Japan; just listening to this on NPR had me in tears) Stupidity (on my list; why modern people choose to be ignorant) And many, many more. In the spirit of "Grass", I heartily recommend "Smiley Face", about the misadventures of a young lass who accidently consumes waaay too much MJ early in the AM. I haven't laughed so hard since I first saw "Young Frankenstein".

Here's some books I've enjoyed lately... "Everything I Want to do Is Illegal; War Stories From the Local Food Front" by Joel Salatin "Twelve-by-Twelve; A One-Room Cabin off the Grid & Beyond the American Dream" by William Powers "Animal Farm" by David Kirby "Off the Grid; Inside the Movement for More Space, Less Government and True Independence in Modern America" by Nick Rosen Websites... Utne Reader Fantastic magazine also. No Impact Man His movie was also pretty interesting. Mother Earth News Another fantasic source of information. Reality Sandwich Counter-culture fun. Living off the Grid This website was started by the Nick Rosen who wrote the book "Off the Grid". There's tons more but this should get you started. *edited to add website link.

BBC did a good docu-drama on the Lehman Brothers collapse. Given the folly of his recent congressional testimony it makes for good viewing.

Greatest Documentary Period: "Roger and Me" I saw that film of what it has to be twenty years ago now in a business ethics class, and it has affected me and my views on business everyday since. Especially now, as I see business's only interested in helping themselves and not the employee.
