I have a Dyson Pet and I LOOOOOVE it! I don't have the ball, but it's still great. Best investment ever.

I only used a Dyson once and I was severely disappointed. Everyone had touted its ability to vacuum, however I found it sorely lacking. It was not much help vacuuming up the broken ceiling tiles at my work.

I bought a Dyson "pet ball" a month or so ago and so far I'm way impressed. I haven't figured out why the thing is "purple" but I didn't buy it for the color.

We have one, about 4 yrs old now and I love it!   Tossed the Hoover right out the window :)  It's not made of iron, like the old time machines, so the plastic will probably break eventually, but if you have a bad back, this is awesome.  With two dogs running the house and living out in the boondocks, dust is and little fuzzies are constant, I will never be without my Dyson :)

When I win the lottery, I was told I could be the newest one...and one of those fans too!  Just to see how they work!   That guy is a genius, I can't wait to see what he invents next, lol

We have a dyson here and I love it. I've used the dyson ball as well, but I don't like that one as much as the one at home. The ball is actually a bit difficult to maneuver.

The pet ball is probably purple because the Dyson Animal is purple as well. I had a Dyson Animal and it worked well for a year or so and then started randomly overheating like 2 minutes after you turn it on and no matter how clean the inside was it just worked crappier and crappier everytime I used it. I have a Eureka Boss pet smart vac and I love it, ya gotta watch the stair attachment though, it has a brush that spins extremely fast. Whenever I used it on the steps in the entryway it would kick and sand on the step back at me so hard my leg would get sandblasted

As I said I swear by Numatics and so have a modified Henry canister vac, modified in that it is a mixture of the better machines, Hepa pet filter, twin speed and commercial size canister, also the turbo brush tool for picking up what my cat leaves behind.

What does amaze me is the stupidity of people, they just skip these things when they stop working, whereas I rescue them, repair them and give to my pals, just given a pal a commercial Henry to keep his Chinchilla mess down ( seven of the little messy sods). Always the same faults, and the faults are caused by abuse, like using a heavy foot to tap off the on/off switch, the result being the simple switch inside gets driven past it's operational setting, simply take it apart and reset it, easy repair. The other common fault is the damned moulded plug, they break down way too easily, simply cut the bugger off and put on a normal plug.

Numatics with the correct filter fitted will also suck up water and I have even done it with my own machine without the correct filter, a bit naughty, but the electrical insulation on these machines is superb, as I found out when I used to hire numatics out to all and sundry when I worked for plant hire companies as a repairman. The first we found the electrics were damp, was it failed the P.A.T test. Drying the thing out involved just turning it on and let it suck dry air for a while and do that until it passed the flash test and was there fit for hire again.

I have also found Dysons in skips too, and have had a go at them, put found them unfriendly to repair and it is just so cheap in it's construction that I have come to the conclusion people are paying what they do for these things for what is basically a heavily advertised fashion item.

But the Dyson vortex, it is hardly a new design, and he didn't invent it, but I lost faith in the guy when he went against his own words and moved production to the far east, thus putting his UK workforce out of work. I remember the guy right back at the start stated he was going to have his designs built in Britain, give the British jobs, a few years later, he transferred operations to the Far East, so he could make more money from his product, he in two words sold out. I won't purchase nor recommend his products out of principle.

I have a Dyson (my chinchillas are slobs and I have litter and hay scattered on the carpet). It's pretty good, but a Ridgid shop vac does a darn good if not a better job and can be bought for well under $100.
I gots me a Ridgid, meself. Great machine. I put the 0.1 micron (IIRC) filter on it, and it really does an excellent job. The problem is, using it is awkward. The hose twists in the wrong way every time, and the attachments get stuck (plastic on plastic; super-high coefficient of friction) It also turns under its own volition, so that the exhaust blows the dog into the next room. Smitty (at Rainbow Bridge now, I miss him terribly) wasn't very fond of going airborne. That exhaust is wicked.

Otherwise, that machine is a clean machine... very clean...

Ok a quick lesson, from my vacuum repair guy, on upright vacuum cleaners, no new non-commercial up right is worth a shit.  That roller on the front it has brushes in most cases these days right?  Go check, and come back to the post.  If there is a "beater bar" it is plastic, right?

Now the purpose of that "beater bar" is to slap the carpet hard enough to bounce the deep seated dirt into the air stream so it can be sucked up.  Exactly how hard is a plastic bar going to slap the carpet versus a metal bar?   Short answer... not as hard,  period.

As I stated previously I'll match my 20 plus year old Eureka, and my 18 year old Hoover against any of the new machines, plus both of my machines came with 30 foot cords, most new machines a 20 foot cord as standard.   Why?  Easy, every third machine they build now has "free" cord compared to the old 30 foot standard.

First time I saw Dyson on one of his advertisements on the tube here in the states my visceral reaction was "CON-MAN".  From the stories I have heard from people I know that own one, and from here on this thread, I don't think I was too far wrong.

I have had a Dyson vacuum now for years and it is amazing. When we first got it, I'd vacuum and everytime it would suck up a ton of stuff from the carpet. It was scary how much stuff was coming out of what I thought was a clean carpet. Obviously our old vacuum hadn't been doing the job for some time. The downsides are that it is heavy and its irritating how you have to take the thing apart to use the handheld feature with the attachments. I definitely think it cleans better than any other vacuum brand I've ever had although I've never had an Orek. They look pretty awesome as well.

My Henry cylinder vac has that much suction, it even picks up the carpet sometimes and it is positively evil with things that get in the way, coins, pens, tools etc, the first you know is the rattling up the pipe and the smack as what got sucked hits the back of the cylinder, no wonder they are the favourite of building contractors, they even suck up rubble.

I have all hardwood floors and tile throughout, so I don't need a vacuum, other than my Swiffer vacuum sweeper. After seeing how much hair and dust THAT picks up all day long, I doubt I'd ever want carpets again. When I'm done cleaning, I know the place is clean. No mysteries lurking beneath any surfaces. I haven't had any visits to the hospital with asthma attacks either, since moving into a place without carpets.

I have wondered about the various vacuums, and the claims made on television - but I'm happy to not need to find out if they are true!

Most of the dust in our homes is in fact shed skin flakes, hair and clothing fibres.

The downstairs is mostly ceramic tile, and we have the swiffer and a steam cleaner for that. But I loves my carpet, I spend a lot of time on the floor, spreading out projects, yarn, all that.

Our current Hoovers are not new, so I am glad they are reliable! I will check into those Henrys and see if you can get them in the US.

I have pets (dogs and house rabbits) and I bought a purple Dyson pet six years ago. It was the best purchase I EVER made!

It does wood floors, tile, carpet and stairs really well, and I even use one of the attachments with it to do the dusting!

I've had Henry's before, and didn't think much of them. I bought a 'pet' Hoover, which lasted less than a year before it fell apart and was unrepairable. My Dyson is awesome, and when it finally dies I shall buy another purple beauty

It's remarkable, the different experiences we've had with the same products! I wonder what that says about Asian manufacturing quality control!

Our third broke last week - we are 5 years in the house. Magic at getting the job done - not very robust. However we have carpet up and downstairs and I do believe its the "knocking" they get while being dragged around that kills them. I would not buy another ( unless they come out with a model to last)

I think the problem is,is finding a device that caters for all uses, to which I understand not every device is as hardy. I think it has come to the time where one needs to specify what use the vacuum will be used for. My favourite, the Numatic Henry and it's family are good for general purpose muck shifting and can be adapted for more specialist needs, but it is no comparison compared to a machine designed for the requirement in mind.

Pet hairs are a problem, they require heavy suck and at least a rotating brush to pick up, as pet hairs in carpets are kind of sticky, they do not give up their carpet hold easily, so a good rotating brush is necessary and with that a brush that can be maintained easily.

If one is looking for a replacement floor cleaner, they need to define the major use and there find the best option.
