about 2 or 3 weeks ago I was extremely ill with flu-like symptoms, listlissness, body aches, tossing up my cookies, and eliminating them in other ways, even though I did not eat anything for the 3 days it was at its peak. I rarely get sick and this one was worse than anything I have felt. No part of me could tolerate anything more than water for 3 of those days. Since the illness has passed, I still cannot eat like I used to. It takes me about 3 hours to consume something as easy as a sandwich.
My stomach is stll sore, and looks a bit swollen. It feels like I have been holding in my muscles for hours at a time without rest, but it looks like I am deliberately pushing my belly outward. I know I have something but since I don't have insurance it will take me a bit of time to eliminate all possibilities. I went to the doctor on Monday, and though he gave me meds for a bladder infection, he told me there was no sign of an infection beyond my symptoms. 107 bucks later it will be at least 2 weeks before I can take that hit to my bank account again.

What concerns me most right now is the fact that I have not lost one pound during the flu, the no eating, the less than 1000 calories which I can now tolerate in my system without needing to puke it up. Shouldn't I be losing weight? Has anyone else had very little caloric intake without losing?

<---- Not a medical professional in an form or capacity, nor do I play one on TV --

Is this your regular doctor that knows you well (and you feel/think gives you good care) or just _a_ doctor?

What did he say about your swollen, pooched out belly?

I don't know if strained belly muscles can become inflamed the way other muscle strains do and then cause swelling?

I have had stomach bugs that linger and kill my appetite for awhile. If you have a bladder infection on top of that I imagine that would compound things.

Maybe things will begin sorting themselves once the medication for that kicks in.

If you begin having severe pain or really unusual symptoms, don't wait for the bank account, go to the ER. If you think it might be an emergency, you are a very reasonable person, it probably is.

If you have curtailed your physical activity then you could be not losing weight despite the "dieting."

I recommend that you continue not eating for some days, perhaps up to a week. Just have water and vitamin C tablets. If you really feel a need to eat, then have some plain yoghurt.

I actually considered not eating, everytime I do it hangs around in the upper part of my intestines. But when I was not eating all my muscles were getting cramped. It just feels like a blockage of some sort that won't untie.

Is your stomach hard? If yes, i have more questions that may be a bit too delicate for this thread.

There is no question my physical activity was cut back. I just thought there was a minimum amount of calories for a quieter life. Just judging on what I have eaten in the last week I would say it is anywhere from 500 to 1000 calories.

I was in a great deal of pain on Monday when I made myself go in for a doctor visit. I am not prone to being sick, it has to be a major deal for me to go in for a visit. I do not have a regular doctor, thus no medical history.

Others have commented on the stomach, which I am sure you are getting checked. Yes, I have heard of many cases of no intake and minor weight loss.

Might the swelling be caused by hunger edema?

I see that one of the causes of muscle cramps may be a lack of salt. Drink some salted water. I still recommend to not eat for another week and to daily take some vitamin C tablets.

Aside from the lack of weight loss, a lot of what you describe reminds me of what GD went through before he was diagnosed with Crohns. His large intestine had ulcerated and was actually leaking into the abdominal cavity. Had become grossly infected and required surgery and a two week hospital stay.

The freaky part was that he had been ill off and on for over a month before his blood tests showed any abnormality. Then, it quickly went haywire. Had he not gone back and demanded more tests that day, there was every chance it could have killed him. He was literally going into shock in the doctor's waiting room.

Don't poo poo your symptoms. The swollen stomach thing is the part that concerns me.

If Crohn's, it ought to subside after about a dozen days if she stops eating.

A flare up yes, but not if there is an ulceration/infection. There is a difference.

Indeed, infection is likely to be lethal.

It's just sad that in the wealthiest nation on earth, a suffering woman can't go to the doctor for proper treatment because she doesn't have health insurance.

I am currently drinking some lemony crap to facilitate a CT scan in a couple of hours. Initial visit included bloodwork (elevated white cells), urine (yes now it is infected) and xray. There are definite mass areas that cannot be viewed properly, hence the CT scan later. It might be my appendix or something more scary.
I hate doctor visits but my tummy hurts!
