Firm just loads up one or two chapters of some technical or philosophical book.

lol... From his breathing I'd say he never makes it past five minutes before he's sound asleep.

Rarely have I heard the Toby Keith biography as being listed under technical or philosophical studies.

Whatever floats your boat.

Who's Toby Keith?  He a friend of yours, domi?  [:-]

lol. Yeah we are good buddies.

He single handedly saved the world from the Dixie Chicks. He's dreamy.

How are things in your neck of the world? Up pretty late. What tape is in store for you tonight?

always attempt to get the room as dark as possible.

This is me, I hate light in a room. I have dark drapes because I have lots of windows and sunlight pouring in every morning...

My suggestion for relaxing is try to meditate every day... if you have trouble sleeping concentrate on relaxing every body part... starting with your toes. This usually bores me enough to fall asleep before I get to my knees

First thing; it's normal!
Presuming you've checked with your doctor that your thyroid's ok, etc:
No street drugs, caffeine or alcohol; taper off if you're addicted. Sleeping pills don't give you the deep REM sleep, just make you unconscious.
Don't nap, otherwise you won't sleep at night, and wake up the same time weekend/weekday, or sleep in less than one hour and only if you must. Go to bed at 10:30 and get up at 6:30 no matter what.
Don't drive sleep-deprived.
Same routine every night, just like babies. Exercise but no closer to bedtime than two hours. No TV news, just a nice familiar book for half-an-hour before bed, then a shower/bath, brush your teeth, have an orgasm, and lights out!
Cover all lights including your clock radio. Use two alarms if you keep rousing yourself to look at the time.
Deal with your daytime stress during the day; if you find you're worrying, write it down in a journal after supper, then shut it and put it in a drawer, and DON'T OPEN IT until the next day.
Remember, you still get microsleep when you don't think you've closed your eyes, so stay down at least one hour. If you're still awake, get up and do something light and boring, like alphabetising your CDs or ironing a shirt. After an hour, go back to bed. Don't watch TV or eat a big meal; drink some water or eat some cereal if you're hungry.
White noise machine or light classical all-night radio station.

Did I mention ORGASMS!?

Good luck!

Orgasms wake me up often, not the other way around

Non-pharm..maybe try sleepy time tea or valerian and kava-kava. Melatonin gave me terrible nightmares. It's odd how different substances work on people.
Also I know it is very corny, but when I can't sleep I keep the room dark and cool and lay in bed and imagine I have won the lottery, like millions. I start to loosely think of the very first thing I would do and what family and friends I would help out and TADA I wake up in AM.
On the Pharm path I have one called Restoril and it works very well. No hangover just that rested slept feeling.. My insurance knocks it down to 5 bucks for a months supply and I use it intermittenly one jar lasts me 3-4 months....anywho best of luck to you lots of good ideas....[:)]

Twoshoes -> RE: Insomnia Is the WORST (8/21/2010 9:38:43 PM)

I'm young so I can get away with 98% of all the stuff you guys listed. What works for me is physical exhaustion.

So have you ever tried causing physical exhaustion? Like running laps around the park or climbing a mountain? :)

Also, focus on trying to stay awake at the right times instead of trying to go to sleep at the right times. (If trying to fix a sleep schedule).

juliaoceania -> RE: Insomnia Is the WORST (8/21/2010 9:40:52 PM)

I slept even better when I was younger than I do today.... man, I am a bedhead.

Twoshoes -> RE: Insomnia Is the WORST (8/21/2010 9:44:42 PM)

I can fall asleep with music and lights on, while someone is having a loud conversation on the phone or a nearby room. Got nothing to complain about, I hope it holds up.

Meditation doesn't sound bad, then I could learn to be at peace anywhere!

LaTigresse -> RE: Insomnia Is the WORST (8/22/2010 4:22:56 AM)

Monday night football will knock me out almost every time!

KatyLied -> RE: Insomnia Is the WORST (8/22/2010 4:56:35 AM)

Exercise during the day.  And a quiet routine before bedtime helps.  Although there is nothing that can be done when hot flashes wake you up at 5am.  I can get to sleep easily, but I can not stay asleep.  But I deal with it or embrace it.  Not going to take sleeping pills.

Things have been pretty busy lately.  Not much spare time to spend down in the P&R forums. [sm=writing.gif]

Last night I was on lecture 10 (The Chrisitanization of the Roman Empire) from Dr. Bart Ehrman's "From Jesus to Constantine: A History of Early Christianity".  Interesting, but I never seem to get more than a few minutes into a lecture before the sun comes up, again.
