I would let him vent, then if he wants my opinion I would tell him to cut her loose or else he's just going to keep re-living this continual heartbreak, and never be able to heal from it and move on. I doubt it will do much good though.
Sounds like he hasn't reached his saturation point yet; hopefully he will eventually, and will move on to find someone more stable and comitted to the same long-term goals as his own. Meantime all you can do is be there for him as a shoulder to lean on.
