In scandinavia, which has or had a couple things going on, the father as absolute head of household, ( but divorce was quite easy for a woman to obtain from even aincient times) would name his children quite often after himself and they didnt have familial names so it would be lars larson or thora larsdatter (in the case of a girl) (which brings up a question or two in that there are 'datter' family names today) immaculate conceptions thru the ages?
In any case my name would have been at some point Knut(e) Knutson (Kenneth Kennethson, perhaps) Newt is english (as in Newton) the K is never silent in Knute it aint Nute Rockne.
There have been Knut(e) Knutsons back in my family history as long as I can trace back, until my generation.
Anyway--- like Thor was a popular name as was Knute and Lars and Swen and Ole or Ola and so on.......so you got Thorson Knutson Larson Swenson Olson, usually Olasson remains intact, no contration and so on........nevertheless we come from a small township near Melby(e) Norway means mill town .....so with the plethora of common names across scandinavia they went to Knute Knutson av (of) or fra (from) Melby to make it a little easier to distinguish Knute Knutsons...............
At embarkation to the US, Knute Knutson fra Melby (my great grandfather) became Knute Melby. The rest, including that; is history.
