Comodo Internet Security.

It is free, it is a firewall, and it is an antivirus checker and the best thing is you can turn off all incoming ports.................which is where they can get you often even with anti virus.

COMODO............JUST DO IT!!!!!

I cant get rid of the icon.

Drag it into the waste bin and next empty the waste bin. (I had the same problem.)

I heard that even AVG is not safe, that if you DL it from anywhere other than their site it might be malware or virus. This sounds like a similar situation. To address the problem all I can think of right now is not take anything they offer, go look for what you need. In the Google or whatever window look at the URL, and see if it makes sense, and once clicked, look at the lil window at the top of the browser to make sur that you are where you think you are.

There is a program much like the one that luscious is talking about which uses the AVG logo and also goes by some variation of the AVG name.

You must pay close attention.

OK...I know I will take grief and hear all the horror stories but ...it is better to spend the money and get a good Internet security program... I use Norton...yes I know it is a memory hog but I have plenty to spare. The benefits are the automatic downloading of antiviral updates…the settings to stop popups and rouge programs before you even see them.

There are good free programs but they don’t have the resources of a Norton to keep up with all the new viruses.

I’ve never had a virus or rough program in all the years of computing and it has been worth every penny of cost… Be cheap and grieve…spend a little and keep your computer virus free and in good running condition

I use Norton also.  It has literally stopped what was happening and slapped me upside the head saying this is not good when a friend got one of those email viruses that mails to everyone in your address book.  It deleted it as soon as I opened it.

A couple times when I have clicked links, it has done the same thing.  I love it, and knock on wood, for 8 years I have never had any problems with Norton and I have never gotten any type of virus.  I think it's the best 40 bucks a year you can spend.

flcouple2009 -> RE: Spent the night dealing with malicious rougue programs (8/13/2010 12:41:41 PM)

The only time I ever got a virus is when I was using Norton.  AVG is certainly Norton's equal and often gets better reviews.

Symantec (Norton) was never the best security/AV software. They do have great tools for system administrators and that's why you often see it installed at your work place. If I was a sysadmin somewhere, I'd buy it for my company too; but that does not mean I would be buying the best software available - only the best tool to make my own life easier.

Microsoft has more money and resources than Symantec. Here's a free anti-virus software from them (pretty good too): http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

kdsub -> RE: Spent the night dealing with malicious rougue programs (8/13/2010 2:56:55 PM)

Norton is more complicated then many other programs and has many bells and whistles...but if you set it up properly so it can automatically update it works very well... I think most bad reviews are not about it's virus protection but about how complicated it is to set up. I get a kick out of people that want everything done for them then bitch when it does not work. I customize according to my requirements.

Comparing freeware to a comprehensive system like Norton is like comparing PictureIt to CS5 Photoshop. If people don’t take an active part in learning how their virus protection works they are not getting the full benefit of the program.

Of course like most else with computers it is just opinion and what works for me may not seem like a good idea to others...results are all that count.

Missokyst -> RE: Spent the night dealing with malicious rougue programs (8/13/2010 3:47:30 PM)

Yes, there are some things that are called rootkits that can only be killed by programs designed to hunt them down. I use those in my job.. but I don't give advice on those programs because some of them will destroy data and you have to know how to recover in case that happens.

I was inflicted with some gnarly trojans that neither the commercial stuff nor malwarebytes, etc. could handle.  I was blocked from windows update and the windows security center, and system restore was blocked.

Finally had to wipe the drive and start over.  A good weekend's entertainment.

Good grief.  Doesn't anyone pay attention?
Good programs:
  • Malwarebytes
  • Superantispyware
  • PCtools
  • Threatfire

If you have XP, go into safe mode with networking, choose administrator and disable the evil doer enough so that you can kill it.  For the most part on an XP you will find it in C:\Document and Settings\Application data\.... check for some weird file that looks similar to this oculiejowe3jro.. ect.  Notice that nothing in there makes sense if you try to make a word from it.
Delete the file after making sure that when you opened the file it has the icon for that rogue program.
Install the above programs, update and run them.

If you have Vista or 7, you will find the rogue program in
C:\Users\App\Local  ... once again look for a file that makes no spelling sense.  Inside you will find an icon that looks like that rogue program you saw on your computer.
DO NOT delete any file that does not have that icon inside.

You don't know what you are talking about. You don't seem to have any expertise in any AV products, nor do you have any expertise in inner workings of Security Essentials tool.

Price is not the factor in determining the quality of the product.

kdsub -> RE: Spent the night dealing with malicious rougue programs (8/13/2010 5:12:34 PM)

No need to be disrespectful...unless you like being an asshole... It is easy to have a difference of opinion as I posted. You use what you like and so will I...both of us are just giving our opinion.

And now the non-snarky three word answer to your incredibly snarky response : ZONE ALARM PRO.  THAT is the shizznit of ALL internet security suites.  Steve Gibson might just know a thing or three more than you.  I could get vicious here, but I think the three words are enough.

It is not AVG but Trojan.FakeAV
Here is more info including are some of the mechanisms it (and similar programs) uses to make you think your computer is infected. They are all smoke and mirrors but quite convincing.

flcouple2009 -> RE: Spent the night dealing with malicious rougue programs (8/13/2010 7:13:22 PM)

Yes, you used to see it a lot in pop ups.  They duplicated the AVG logo and would throw a name on it like AV Shield.  It would tell you a security scan found you had x amount of infections and to click now to rid yourself of them.  Once you clicked it would install itself in and want money to unlock.  If you weren't paying attention it looked just like AVG which was how they got people to click on it.

ZONE ALARM PRO

I had used Zone Alarm for years about ten years ago. I have good memories about it. However, when I later got a new computer and a new antivirus program, Zone Alarm proved to interfere with the latter and I regretfully removed Zone Alarm from my computer.

Just so you know Zone Alarm Pro does anti virus these days, and it is at least as good as Mc Afee or Norton, if not better.  The zone alarm creator Steve Gibson writes the majority of his programs in "assembly language" which makes them waaaayyy smaller and much less of memory hogs.

Norton may do a good job but it is such a freaking resource hog that I had to uninstall it and try something else.

I do not believe this is correct. Steve Gibson is the man generally credited with the
term "spyware". He has said some good things in the past about Zone Alarm when
he appears on the radio, usually with Leo Leport.

But if you go to Steve Gibson's webpage you will find he is still selling the latest
version of SpinRite and giving away a lot of useful software, but you cannot get Zone Alarm there.

Unless you are talking about another Steve Gibson.

Gibson wrote the first Zone Alarm in the mid 90's (iirc) and since sold to Check Point Systems.   This from Wikipedia : ZoneAlarm is a personal firewall software application originally developed by Zone Labs, which was acquired in March 2004 by Check Point.

Zone Labs was Gibson's baby, I know because that was where I first down loaded Zone Alarm, and I  NEVER had so much as an intrusion on my machine when I ran it.   FWIW I run Trend Micro Security suite now, and when this subscription expires I am going back to Zone Alarm.   Any way more germane to this discussion is the fact that it is still the single best internet security suite on the market.
