I remember reading that in Australia, if someone is attacked by a shark on the southern coast, its most likely to be a great white attack. The southern coast is the coolest being closest to the antarctic. For the north coast, the offending shark is most likely to be a tiger shark. Bulls are able to swim beyond brackish water and enter fresh water. They have attacked people in rivers hundreds of miles from sea, in places like South America and India. quote:
ORIGINAL: soul2share Splorff has it correct......whites prefer the cooler waters of the oceans, however, they will follow their food supply, and they may travel to warmer waters for breeding, but since no one's ever gotten footage or seen Whites breed, that's as good a guees as any. A few months ago, a 14' white was spotted off the coast here in J'ville, it had been tagged in Woods Hole, MA, and they were tracking it. It was also seen by a boat full of fisherpeople (there were women on board!), and they got pics of it. Me, I would've thought it was great to see a White in the ocean. Interestingly enough, the inset pic of the shark shown while the Jaws theme played is a Bull shark...one that is far more dangerous than a White....they have attacked many people here on the Florida coast, and a few have died. The Bull is an agressive shark, and when he bites, won't let go...they have been dragged ashore while still attached to their victim! Bulls can also go from fresh water to salt water without any difficulty, so they've been seen in rivers. The Matawan Creek attacks in New Jersey are now being attributed to a Bull shark instead of the original thought of it being a Great White......Whites can't shift to fresh water. I loved the movie Jaws, but hate what it did to the shark, especially the White Shark, population. Even Peter Benchley wasn't happy...he now speaks out for the sharks. And I LOVE Shark Week! Got to watch it at work, and I'll catch the repeats when it's on Discovery on my days off!
