prior to the...ahem...drama of yesterday, i was having a blast with a new cat o' nine tails whips that my beau got for me. i primarily used an infinity symbol motion while using it, with little variations in between. i lost track of the time in terms of how long i was going at it, but i feel as though it was around two hours. my wrist was so sore, but typically, so are my biceps after giving a hard paddling. now this morning, my wrist is still a bit ache-y, but its making this odd clicking noise whenever i move it, something that its never done before. should i not be using that motion? does anybody have a suggestion to make it less painful, but still gives a hard impact with the whip?

Not sure precisely what the problem is lass and it may be worth while allowing your medico have A look just to be sure there is no damage. However I do use floggers often and often do so without a human target but for excising the muscle groups and keeping my arms limber. This is a standard work out for ere I pick up swords for a really good workout on mind, body and spirit. Now your 20/21 and I'm nearly 65 so it figures that regular practice for me could be why I have few issues with wrists forearms upper arms and shoulders. art of my regular workout (just to give you an idea) involves an 8' bull-whip (triple plated) in each hand and finishing with an 18' bullock whip for fun and pure devilry.  You problem simply could be over working the wrists especially if you are out of practice. It could be your technique needs refining. If so, find someone with expertise and ask them to evaluate you. If it were you  trying to crack the whip, I could understand a painfull wrist untill you got the technique right and until muscle memory kicked in. Like so many similar things and sword play uses similar muscle groups, which need to be developed and taught by practice how to work as you want.

If you do find out what the problem is lass, please post and let us know, you have again aroused my interest.

around your wrist is like a rubber band of cartilage like stuff called the Palmer Carpal Ligament (as in carpal tunnel syndrome)

http://www.drfoot.co.uk/wrist_pain/wrist_anatomy.htm (see picture here)

and it is swollen from your repetitive motion, making your radius and ulna ends sort of bind together tighter, thats what makes the clicking noise, the compressed air popping outta there.

you should stretch your hand in supine and prone positions and so on like these videos, starting with Stop!(in the name of love) stretch and doing to the end.
http://www.ergocise.com/wrists.html

Additionally, with an acute injury such as this, ibuprofen (if you haven't been drinking) and ice, like maybe from a pack of frozen vegetables.

For next time, when the hurt goes away, warm up with those exercises and practice the moves (without partner or with if you can make it work) for say 10 minutes on, 4 minutes off at low to medium effort, gradually building effort until you get more of your forearm muscles handling it than wrist.

If it helps, what I use for the time after aches and pains is an ointment made here in QWueensland called "Goanna Oil" The old fashion "Tiger Balm" still readily sold in many stores works the same and if not get a bottle of horse liniment from a horse trainer it works too but smells worse. They all create a heat sensation but have the effect of relaxing the muscles and easing our joint pain similar to the medical gels used for inflamed joints but sell at about twice the price. . If this works then I'd suggest a good relaxing hot bath with your favourite herbs/aromatherapy oils Were it me I'd be adding mustard and other hot spices into the bath mixture too..

DS you are such a sweetheart..

Whenever we embark on a new exercise untrained (and believe me some of this shit is WORK!) we tend to over use our ligaments rather than our muscles because they are tougher.

Thats why when you do preacher curls (for the guys) the pain is mostly in your inner elbow joints and thats why there is alot of rotator cuff and tennis elbow stuff.....too much too hard too fast too soon, no warmup 0-1000 in one second.

Ron beat Me to it.  What you're doing is over straining your wrist.  Surprisingly enough, the repetitive motion is too much for the primal carpal ligament.  This is something to keep in mind because, over a course of time, you can give yourself carpel tunnel.  Very much the same issue that some folks have to watch out for when they have a job that has repetitive motion where the hands or wrists are involved.  (Think check out gal at the supermarket.  Ever see them wear those wrist guards?)  Those of us who like florentine flogging are setting ourselves up for a double whammy in this because we're using both hands/wrists at once.

This is the very reason why anybody who has watched Me play will see that I change up a lot.  If I'm using one flogger, I will switch up hands.  If I'm using two, I will change the pattern up or follow the pattern with a crack that the bottom and I will both get a few seconds break from the continual motion.  Heavier floggers (weight) won't get used for as prolonged a period of time as lighter ones.  Also, I change toys out.  If I've been flogging with a medium set of floggers for a bit, I'll switch out to something that is easier on the wrists (cane, paddle, whatever) for at least a few minutes to give Me a bit of a break on the repetitive motion.

You may have a toy that is just plain too heavy for you for a long duration.  Use it for shorter time periods until you become accustomed to the weight.  Also, until you get to the point where you can use it for longer periods, make sure you are not swinging it continually the same way.  A constant infinity pattern is going to be the one that is hardest on your wrist, so alternate that with different impact and motions.

I found an old tin of something called 'Fiery Jack' when I first moved into my last home.  This works the same way as horse liniment.  From what I can tell, all it is is Vaseline mixed with cayenne pepper.  Certainly does the job, though.  At a pinch I'd certainly try mixing those ingredients to make a tester embrocation.

rest, ice, compression, elevation.

Don't heat it per IB's suggestion till after the swelling has gone down, 2-3 days should do it.
And yes, you were bending your wrists which has caused the carpal tunnel syndrome.
Keep the wrist straight and use the arm muscle, not the wrist for the motion.

Asylum,

Good advice so far.. especially about seeing a doctor within a day or two if the pain doesn't subside. Something not mentioned yet is the center of gravity of the instrument. Besides repetitive motion, you may be holding the piece in the wrong place. Find where the balance is and use your grip there.. not too tight but not so loose that it will go flying either. I've seen a lot of people who are unused to a new piece of equipment hold it way tighter than is necessary. Good luck. Hope you feel better soon.

Great thought Lass.... I actually prefer to have a lanyard attached to my wrist so if a weapon or "toy" slips from my grasp. It will only hit me.

Fiery Jack - The Toy Dolls

Oh! I woke up with a backache
Backache! Backache!
I thought I ought to go to the first aid tin
Where I found something for my backache
Backache! Backache!
I rubbed in some cream and started to scream! Oh no!!!

[Chorus:]
Firey Jack Firey Jack- It's red hot on your back
Firey Jack Firey Jack- Believe me it does knack
Firey Jack Firey Jack- It's red hot on your back
Firey Jack

Now I had a back ache on me backache
Backache Backache!
I jumped into the bath full of cold water
The firey Jack had made me backache
Backache Backache!
I'm worse than before I can't take anymore
Oh no!!!

[Chorus]

Oh! If you do get a backache
Backache backache!
And you feel you have to reach for the first aid tin
Think! Life is not that bad with a backache
If you see a tin with firey Jack in
Stay awayyyyy...

[Chorus]
[Chorus]

Its red hot... on your back... on your back

Tell him you were in a parade or something similiar and had to wave a flag back and forth. That way you can show him the movement you were making without going into details you are uncomfortable with. As to the cracking, I can't say. My joints make noises all the time, but I am a whole lot older than you, so that doesn't surprise me.

In general, you always want the bigger joints to do the work. So the shoulder should be moving instead of the wrist.

They make compression gloves for craft artists...hand-eze is the good one, but there is also a version you can get at Joann Fabrics. They are AMAZING for the pain relief.

LP said it about switching grips, motion, and ARMS. It's fun to be ambidextrous! Do the RICE thing, and hey! remember that you are your most valuable toy, so treat yourself right.
