An update for those interested (those who dont like cats should seek professional help)
Fudge, (who is by the way, the brother of Charlie pictured left but nothing like him), went to the doctor for his one week check up yesterday and all was fine with his leg. Less fine is that he has to stay in for another two weeks yet......
He's been outside three times now though. The first time he was let out by his helpful older sister opening the door for him. He was quickly recaptured and returned to the front room - the cage is in the front room but Fudge has informed me in no uncertain terms that he objects most strongly to being put in there, and quite honestly the mess he makes when in there makes it unviable.
The second time I put him on a leash with a harness (more kinky stuff). He spent five minutes running and walking about and then decided he was going off on his own. Cue a frantic struggle as he tried to pull away and I tried to get him before he hurt himself even more. After that I decided no more outside.
Except that last night the little monkey got the door open himself. Its fairly easy for a cat to push the door open from the other side, but for him to pull it open (its on a self close spring), quietly and without me seeing him was quite a feat - maybe he's much more clever than we thought.
He walked to the kitchen and had some dinner with his family. Thats nice I thought, closing the cat flap. A backlog of cats grew at the catflap, wanting to go out when it was switched for "in only".Fudge continued eating.
The next thing I knew he was at the catflap and again his helpful elder sister came to his aid - coming into the house. Fudge caught the flap before it could close and, hobbling on three legs, somehow pushed himself through. I opened the stupid catflap and the rest went out too.
I'll soon capture him I thought, taking a pack of treats outside. Everyone came quickly for treats, Fudge followed. I should have grabbed him then but I didnt, distracted by his sister who arrived late for treats and me, being a fair minded sort ensured she got some. In that moment Fudge was away. You wouldnt believe how fast a cat can run on three legs - it doesnt seem to slow them down any.
He was off, under the gate and out into the neighbourhood. Gone by the time I opened the gate. Thats it I thought, he's a gonner for sure. There was nothing more I could do - I called him, looked about and so on but then it started falling dark.
I really didnt think he'd be back - and yet this morning, here he was, lying on the sofa, waiting his breakfast and seemingly saying that he had had business to attend to but was back now to make me happy that he wasnt out and about on his broken leg.
Methinks he's a much cleverer boy than we had him down for.
