All over the world.  Regardless of the language, an engine is an engine and a transmission is a transmission.

And people are people. All over the world they are built the same. You can call the bone in your upper arm the humerus or the funny bone, but it's still between the shoulder and the elbow. If you tell someone it's between their knee and their ankle you will be wrong. You will also be wrong if you call the bone in question the mandible.

Yes, this is a rant, but I think it's one that's needed throwing.

There are times when facts don't matter. Then there are times when they do.  And when they do, they tend to really matter.

please know the difference, and when they do matter, please get them right. Ignorance is not always bliss.

Wow... I have been reading waaaaay too much Heinlein lately.

There is never too much Heinlein.

(except Farnham's Freehold and Sixth Column of course)

Okay. . . I understand that this is a rant.  I am just unsure of what you are ranting about.

This.

And no, cars are not 'just cars'. Some cars, and people for that matter, are just wayyyyyyyy sexier and more fun to drive!

An italian 3.2L V6 would be very upset with this generalization.

I didn't understand either.
I think it might be about people not being precise enough and it's medical.
Can we talk about cars?

Ignorance is always bliss for the ignorant.

It just annoys the fuck out of the rest of us.

Saying a Car is just a Car is like saying that Size doesn't Matter.

Both statements couldn't be further from the truth.

I'll try to clarify I just didn't really want to single anyone out.

My patience ran out this morning when I saw a poster claiming to be experienced write a post in which he could not even accurately state what the acronym BDSM stands for.

The rant is about facts, and about how when people don't stop and take the time to get them right it makes them look like an idiot.

Would you use a mechanic who didn't know the difference between an engine and a transmission?

Would you see a doctor who didn't know basic anatomy?

Minor style differences, terms, etc do not matter. Even trivial facts may not matter, but just as with any other skill set, in BDSM sometimes the facts and knowing them do very much matter.

Sometimes it's just not OK to get them wrong.

That's all.

Ms. Betty

Go right ahead. I have it out of my system.

We can turn this into any conversation you like.

A car is a car ? You are reading the words of a MF who had (in the family) a car that literally ripped the bolts out of the front seat because it accelerated so fast. Thing would barely get past 100MPH, but it got there fast, I mean like a motorcycle.

Then of course there was that big ugly 1957 Chevy the olman had. It would pop wheelies and go 100MPH in second gear. But later there was no second gear. Do you have any concept of what kind of torque it takes to blow second gear out of a stickshift ? That one however was even a bit more modified. Of course we all knew what to do with suspension, but the engine.... the 57 had a bored out 283 with a Racer Brown roller cam. It also had a hard chromed crank. At 9,600 RPM it would always wipe the number one main bearing. Luckily though, the olman had the crank turned down undersize and had it hard chromed back to size, about .020". The bearing wiped but it didn't waste the whole engine, just time to tow it back to the house and fix it again.

So I am ironically (and I love every minute of it) in a position to say that a car is not a car.

HEY!! I liked Farnham's Freehold!! Ok, not his BEST, by any means, but it was a fun, quick read, IMO.

Cars are not "just cars" and people who read Heinlein's tripe need to learn how to think for themselves.

Cars are just cars? A cigar is just a cigar?

Both are just SO wrong, on so many levels.

T: Stop, you're making me hot!
My brother took a 60's VW Beetle and put an Alfa, water cooled, flat 4 in the back. It could do 130mph. Unfortunately, in order to cool it the rear seats came out and in went a radiator and 2 bloody great big fans! It was deafening and you had to drive with the windows open all the time so the said fans could pull in air. He was a talented engineer, never had a single lesson.
