This is a bit of a rant, I'll put that right up front. Every article I have read about him, every piece of news, seems to have a not of "feeling sorry for Mel", oh, he has a drinking problem, or he's bi polar; or, now most recently, salon.com is talking about his self hatred. Excuse me? He is racist, anti-Semitic and a woman hater/abuser, to me. I was wondering if anyone else is sharing my perception that the media is trying to kind of get him off the hook for his despicable behavior.

Julia, I tend to think the guy is being pounded- If an artist puts out good work- people will fund it. If he is truly creative with his films- .... I dont care what my dentist or hair dresser thinks- but i do care about then doing their job well. I dont know enough about his racist rants.... but I do tend to think Hollywood likes to build people up and tear them down. I cant really even think of any films he did.... Oh well. The press will be a media circus... people seem to like that.

He is a racist. I have not went to anything he put out since Braveheart, but at the same time just because you are a racist douche does not make you a child/wife abuser. He was married to the same woman for 30 years, and even though they are still ironing out her share of the estate, she stands behind him... She made no such vouchers about the racist shit he spewed... I prefer to wait until the authorities go over the recordings, decide whether or not they have been tampered with, etc. She released these things to the press, which makes her a complete and total rat... take your domestic shit and work it out behind closed doors and don't destroy your daughter's father.... her daughter is the one that pays for her shit... This kid doesn't have a chance

-- a lover recording things- seems- extreme. People break up all the time. Some manage to air the laundry for everyone to see. Whenever there is a break up- I try not to get influenced by the he said- she said part. a vengeful ex- is bad news. I am glad it did not happen to me.

It will be very interesting to see what happens once the tapes are processed by a crime lab.

I think she's pretty crazy herself, but she's manipulative and selfish, and that's easier to reconcile with society than Mel's raving lunatic episodes. But yeah I think he hit her. And threatened her. And probably did knock her teeth out.

There was an expert on the news the other morning who has analyzed tapes for the FBI and he was certain the tapes were not tampered with, and that it was Mel's voice. I think its pretty clear from what he said that he is abusive. As far as I am concerned, a bigot, a racist, an anti-semite, are abusive qualities. As far as the wife, while I cannot attest to her character in any way, she may be terrified of him, hence recording his voice; AND he is still responsible for his behavior. As she is responsible for hers. I dont think the burden of his abuse should be shifted to her. Are we saying "What did she do to provoke him?" That is what abused women have been asked for centuries.

Where does it say that celebrities have to be anything different from anyone else, or is it in their elevated status of worthy of the constant public eye, they must be exemplary humans that we can all look upto. Acting is a job, nothing more, a person makes a film, stars in a film, they are an entertainer and that is it, they should if they are in the public eye be judged on their ability to do their job as everyone is entitled to a private life, the media should not be party to the behind closed doors. Perhaps we as an entertained viewer would do well to give out what we are prepared to accept in our own lives, celebrities are just people, just like the rest of us. As to the ever hungry media, if you value your own privacy, don't buy into media and make it more powerful, as one day, it might be your own private life being ripped open for the world to judge whilst x media organisation profits from your misery

Interesting. The expert I heard speak said that his voice is less clear because she is the one speaking into the phone into the phone and he is not. Maybe they deserve each other.
