Desperate heroin users in a few African cities have begun engaging in a practice that is so dangerous it is almost unthinkable: they deliberately inject themselves with another addict’s blood, researchers say, in an effort to share the high or stave off the pangs of withdrawal. /snip

unbelievable!~!

Wow!  This would be kind of like being a vampire!

Do they sparkle afterwards?  I sure hope not.

I remember one of those mini cartoons on the edge of the pages in Mad magazines.

It was a stoner walking threw an ally with Dracula waiting to pounce.The next frame shows Drac floating away with colors above his head.

It's not much different than standard needle-sharing for AIDS-transmission.  You'll pick up more of a viral load, but old-school needle-sharing is exchanging blood.

Just when I thought I had seen/heard everything.

I am not saying anything about Africans, but are these maybe the same people who rape kids because they think fucking a virgin will cure AIDS ? Maybe you didn't hear about that and I only brought it up now because I thought the time is right.

First of all, taking AIDS out of the equation totally, you can't just inject another's blood into your body because it might be  different type, you remember, like A, B AB ond O, along with the Rh factor. You just can't do this. If the drug is strong enough in the donor's bloodstream so you don't have to drown your own in it, but they must've been high as ten motherfuckers. I think you can withstand a certain percentage of the wrong type of blood, but you can't change blood type.

I don't fuck with hard drugs because I know better, but I know people will be driven to death for the want of more. Is it really that bad ? If so it is a goddam shame, I mean for anyone.

I have known about the various blood types since I was about eight. I was very reluctant to become "blood brothers" with anyone because of it, even though I eventually did. This is where you cut your arm open and rub the wounds together, thus "sharing blood" in a way. But really very little of it gets into your body.

If you're into this topic at all, I would recommend a movie called I Come In Peace. Dolf plays an alien criminal who steals a shitload of smack and injects people with it, and then with a high tech tool extracts the chemical in the brain, which is apparently resultant and is highly coveted and valuable in his world.

But that is some kind of hormone or whatever, I don't see the practicality of doing it directly with blood, and unless everybody has the same blood type down there, I bet a few of them got sick or maybe even died doing this shit.

And all this while most countries give out syringes to addicts so they don't have to share them and spread disease ?

Remember my Moron thread ? People who would take blood like that would need alot of help to reach the moron status. And I think I used the term correctly. This is fucking ridiculous, letem croak, save our oxygen. I am serious.

While I find this very disturbing for the more than obvious reasons , I find it equally disturbing that these people are not only desperate enough to do this but also ignorant enough.

Spend enough time in the local ER and you're gonna listen the most crazed theories (if youre standing up while having sex you cant get pregnant, etc) While a lot of us seem to be/are educated, not everyone in the world has that chance and, sadly, ignorance will lead to death in many a occasion like this one.

Im not saying this to be a party pooper or anything but it is something that I, personally, have a hard time thinking of. Maybe its because I come from a developing country and I could see drugs doing this to kids.

Sadly, my reponse to that is - is that so bad ? Darwin might have been a bit off, but really is life so precious that those who cannot survive should be saved via extreme measures by those who can ? The answer is in your heart, not mine.

If Im not mistaken you're ill yourself. How could you say that?

Or maybe, some of us, were born in the wrong side of the planet.

All it takes is education (and food in a lot of cases)

Sorry about the OT, ill leave the thread alone after this.

Um, actually reading the article might have answered some of the above posters' questions. For instance, this section tells much about the who & why:

...Most of the addicts she has interviewed who practice flashblood, Dr. McCurdy said, are women. For them, sharing blood is more of an act of kindness than an attempt to get high: a woman who has made enough money to buy a sachet of heroin will share blood to help a friend avoid withdrawal. The friend is often a fellow sex worker who has become too old or sick to find customers....

& I note very carefully that this is yet another consequence of the 'war on drugs', like so:
  • Make the drug illegal;
  • Illegal drugs are more expensive, the more they're cracked down on, the higher the price should rise;
  • Usage methods depend on how much one can afford to buy, the less material purchasable the more risks taken to get the high: eating a drug requires the largest amount of the substance to produce a given effect (get high, for instance); snorting is typically the most expensive way to use powdered drugs such as heroin or cocaine; smoking is less expensive; & the needle is the way that makes the drug last the longest. Needle usage is a de facto artifact of the war on drugs.

Oh, & we (the US) went around throughout the 1970s & '80s & basically strong-armed all the other countries on the planet into signing on to our drug war, thus virtually guaranteeing needle-based heroin addiction all over the planet . . . . . I note that traditional usage of opiates is to smoke them, & yes, there is traditional usage of opiates.

In Iran, for instance, smoking opium is a perq for the elderly & retired . . . . . .

"If Im not mistaken you're ill yourself. How could you say that? "

Because I will apply the same standards to myself as others. I know this is rare but if it means my demise, so be it. I know it is difficult to understand, but I could type for days and not get the messege across.

I have been in situations most people can't even imagine and basically I belong dead already. I am thankful for the last extra twenty years or so, but back then before, I was ready to go. Most of my friends were dead anyway.

Just one of those things.

Hell, I used to know needle freaks back in the day who would inject cheap wine when the coke/speed/whatever was gone, just for the needle rush.

Yeah, but it's apparently so much easier and funnier to just skim by, read the title, make a smartass uninformed remark and head off to post again elsewhere. Whee! Great points, DemonKia. Totally agreed..........luci

On the way to work I heard the folks on Dr Radio (Sirius/XM) talk about the report and how overblown and distorted it got by various news outlets.
