JstAnotherSub -> RIP Captain Phil (7/13/2010 5:15:48 PM)

I know, we knew he died back in February.  He was always my fav on Deadliest Catch, maybe because of how he interacted with his kids and crew, maybe because I lusted him big time.

The past few shows, watching his kids deal with his stroke and all the emotions they and others show has had me with that knot in my throat, feeling like a fool since I hate reality tv and have no need for people who get emotionally involved with such silliness.  I suspect it has to do with going back 25 years to a time when I was his boys age, and losing my dad.  Or I am just insane......[&o]

So, am I the only one who is going to roll a bigun and pop a top on a few budweisers and sit and just go through the journey tonight with Phils family and friends?  I felt bad when they told us back in Feb. that he had passed.  Watching the raw emotions unfold has really made me feel like I knew him and his crew.

Well, Jst, I'm not a smoker or a drinker, so I won't be joining you with that, but I also got very attached to Phil and the crew of the Cornelia Marie.

I lost my mother in March after she suffered a massive stroke in February, so I know exactly what the family is going through. I would never wish that kind of emotional pain on anyone.

I really am completely disgusted by Discovery over this. The man died. Plastering his family's and friend's grief all over big scteen TV's around the world for ratings and ad money is sickening. I had pretty much given up on Discovery except for Mythbusters now I'm skipping it completely.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: RIP Captain Phil (7/13/2010 6:20:16 PM)

I am deliberately avoiding the show tonight. I just can't deal. I feel horrible for the family, I am sure they were totally unprepared for his death (being young men, and he being as he was, hiding his real illness) and I have been too close to death to not be overwrought.

And Sig is an ass. Really.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: RIP Captain Phil (7/13/2010 6:23:58 PM)

Discovery didn't make the call on how much to show.  Phil and his sons did.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: RIP Captain Phil (7/13/2010 6:25:09 PM)

Really? I read an interview (on the internet news) where the older boy said he hadn't seen the final footage.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: RIP Captain Phil (7/13/2010 6:27:37 PM)

I meant they wanted the entire story told.  I am sure they weren't in the edit room.

Communication is my problem area.  Never woulda knowed wud ja?

:o)

Sure his family is forcing discovery to spend weeks lingering over his illness and to devote and entire hour to the man's death.

The fact is the producers of the show are actively hoping for people to die on camera. Go find the early seasons on reruns or DVD and listen to the breathless naration about the ships that sank and faceless crabbers who died.

The right thing to do would have been to not show any of that but to let the fans know he died and then show a retrospective and interviews with his survivors.

Death should not be a spectator sport.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: RIP Captain Phil (7/13/2010 6:34:44 PM)

Well, alrighty then!

Yes. We should stuff it into the back of a closet somewhere with mental illness and handicaps and other stuff like that.

DomImus -> RE: RIP Captain Phil (7/13/2010 7:21:26 PM)

I think the show's producers did an excellent job over the episodes that covered Phil's stroke and subsequent passing. He was an important part of the show and of the fleet and told his story with respect. Death is a part of life. It wasn't as if the paparazzi had invaded his hospital room. It was what Phil and his sons wanted. Rest in peace, Phil.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: RIP Captain Phil (7/13/2010 8:00:03 PM)

I think they did an awesome job too.  He woulda loved the jazz and dancing on the streets of N'awlins!

I asking you this in all seriousness:

Did/Do you feel the same way about Farrah Fawcett and her friends and family videoing her dying process ? And making a documentary that was hown on TV ?

edited to add 2nd Question.

texancutie -> RE: RIP Captain Phil (7/13/2010 8:29:35 PM)

He wanted them there.  It was handled well.  Death is just another part of life.

I just finished watching ‘After the Catch’ following the episode in which Capt. Phil died. They spoke with the camera man, who spent a lot of time with Phil filming the show. After Phil got sick, the camera man said Phil told him words to effect of, “You’ve got to film this. You’ve got to film the end.”

TheHeretic -> RE: RIP Captain Phil (7/13/2010 8:34:05 PM)

FR

The show turned into a soap opera after the first season anyway. This is how soap operas sell soap.

DaddysInkedSlut -> RE: RIP Captain Phil (7/13/2010 8:37:39 PM)

Phil wasn't shy when he wanted the camera men out he put them out. He wanted his story to be told ALL of it. I think Discovery did a wonderful job of respecting everyone invovled from the other crews, to the family to Phil himself.

They made a documentary out of watching a woman die from cancer? Yeah I'm pretty disgusted by that too.

domiguy -> RE: RIP Captain Phil (7/13/2010 9:28:16 PM)

He looked unkempt. I am glad he is dead.

Thank You for answering.

Yes, they did. Actually she was the one who started videoing her journey with cancer and wanted it to be videoed until her death. Her choice, just like Cpt. Phil.

While I see nothing wrong with either case, I respect that it makes you uncomfortable/disgusted.
