It can be enlightening and depressing to test an ad. Cut and paste a chunk of text from that attractive ad into Google's "exact match" search category, and you may discover that it's spam, posted on many sites. Just more garbage, phishing and spamming. My profile is less than a day old, and I've already received two extremely-obvious fake messages inviting me to email them directly.

We have had threads about fake profiles before, but never one making the suggestion of copy pasting into google. That is a new one on me. the.dark.

The fact that you cut and paste chunks of profiles into Google suggests you have issues of your own. You're new, so you are ripe pickings for the scammers. Instead of posting about it, ignore the message and move on.

I google all my potential partners. Google can get you some interesting information. I learned a awful lot about the people I know. Some of them are much better than they look on paper. It's fun to do... Off to Google peoples Profiles. QSM

When I was looking for someone special I used to google them...at least those that supplied me any personal information but I never asked for anything personal...I have always had a bit of the detective in me and found it fun! I actually used to do this at my last job to find people from an old 401K plan who were due a little money. Our company administered the plan rather than have a financial institution do it for them ....the company was very small then. I would find addresses online or phone numbers and contact them and tell them they had money and had to transfer it to an IRA or if it was below a certain amount they could just keep it.

Googling someone before meeting when you have spoken for a while, although still somewhat inappropriate, is not the same as getting a first email from someone or looking at profiles and then pasting chunks into Google to see if they are fake. For one thing, we've all talked about how easy it is to spot the fakes, so if someone needs to resort to checking their profile for plagearism, perhaps their bullshit meter is on the fritz and they shouldn't be looking for anyone until they get that problem fixed.

I google anyone that mails me (elsewhere, on a group webhosting page) and anyone with potential to meet. Otherwise, I don't bother. but, LL is so cute, I'm gonna Google that bitch right now! lols.

I use google as Entertainment. I google someone as soon as I have a full name. Just fun to do. I also Google things people say to find out where they get their information. Helps when people don't actually know the bullshit they are slinging and just regurgitating what they "Know" or my favorite make it up as they go along. GOOGLE is your Friend. QSM

I'd agree that a spammer / fake-ad poster is playing games, but how do you manage to twist my taking prudent action to test an ad or a message as "playing games"? I received a suspicious message, checked the profile, cut-and-pasted the content and discovered that the sender has "her" profile in a wide variety of sites, claiming to be a resident of a great many geographically-distant places simultaneously. It's a comment about a technique I found useful. Your comment in response seems rather hostile. Any particular reason why you're displaying such an attitude towards me?

A common-sense awareness that there are a lot of fakes on the net, and a proactive effort to screen them out hardly seems like an "issue" to me. The fact that this profile is new doesn't make ME "new", though I admit I don't live here the way some folks appear to. Sharing this technique may be of use to someone who genuinely is new to all of this. If you dislike my threads, maybe you should take your own advice. Ignore them, and move on.

What is "plagearism"? Posting the same profile to multiple sites, claiming to be from multiple geographic regions simultaneously isn't plaigarism. How is it even remotely "inappropriate", as you say, to background-check an acquaintance (especially an online acquaintance) before becoming more closely involved with them? Obviously, my "bullshit meter" as you so elegantly put it, is working just fine, since it was confirmed by my check. Unlike some, I tend to check on things before drawing conclusions.
