LadyEllen -> master class for terrorists (7/7/2010 10:55:54 AM)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/10536881.stm

Since Saturday now he's evaded police attempts to capture him, having shot and killed one and shot two others, including a police officer, in Northumbria over the weekend.

There are firearms teams from all over the UK searching. There are dogs, helicopters with infra-red cameras and all the kit. And now there are armoured cars coming over from N Ireland to protect the police, against whom he has announced a vendetta.

This is one pissed off man with a gun, tying up huge amounts of resources over several days now and disrupting the whole area. And in a rural part - probably the most rural part - of England, where there are few places to hide from a search helicopter, where (as its believed) they know he's in a small area of a few square miles.

The lesson for jihadis is clear. If you want to make a mark, dont bother with bombs (its the anniversary of the London tube bombings today), take to the outdoors with a weapon. Lots of disruption, huge resources tied up for days. And if you are really serious, coordinate with a few others, drag the firearms teams of the UK to one area of the country before launching your main attack elsewhere.

If only the army werent halfway round the world eh?

E

That would never happen here.

We shoot back.

Cool, our lot would shoot back, only if it was they could find the person, which I suppose goes for your lot too.

To me, it does come across as this is a job for the military, as it is the police seem not to have the intelligence in these going to ground situations, but would the military become involved if they were available, the actual action of hunting and possibly killing one of their own countrymen ?

But if they did, it would be a massive snub for the police who will be seen as incapable in these kind of situations.

So does he: it seems all three people Moat shot, he shot in the back*.
To be fair to the bluebottles, it is a pretty thickly wooded part of Northumberland he's holed up in, and as his "hostages" have now been arrested, it appears that he may well have been getting protected by a few people as well.

*(Apart from his ex, who he shot in the face.)

Aneirin -> RE: master class for terrorists (7/7/2010 11:56:59 AM)

Bluebottles haha, I wish they were, as I have a nice electric fly swat for them.

Moonhead -> RE: master class for terrorists (7/7/2010 11:59:05 AM)

You've not heard that one before? Maybe it's a northern expression, or even a specific Manchester one.

Aneirin -> RE: master class for terrorists (7/7/2010 12:13:29 PM)

I am Northern, born in Lancashire, but no, not heard that one, when I was a kid, it was the rozzers or the fuzz, I often heard that shout' rozzers' accompanied by us legging it, scattering in all directions.

Moonhead -> RE: master class for terrorists (7/7/2010 12:19:41 PM)

It's probably just an older term, then: the guy I heard using it was getting on a bit and had a bit of a '50s fixation.

Aneirin -> RE: master class for terrorists (7/7/2010 7:10:26 PM)

Hey, I just looked up bluebottles on wiki, and it says;

Bluebottle A British term for policeman that may have derived from Cockney rhyming slang. 'Bottle' is an abbreviation of 'bottle and glass', which is rhyming slang for 'arse'.Very fitting !!!

Moonhead -> RE: master class for terrorists (7/8/2010 4:48:48 AM)

Cockney not Manc, then. Thanks.

You have a short memory, pahunkboy.

"The Washington sniper attacks took place during three weeks in October 2002 in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Ten people were killed and three others critically injured in various locations throughout the Washington Metropolitan Area and along Interstate 95 in Virginia. It was widely speculated that a single sniper was using the Capital Beltway for travel, possibly in a white van or truck. It was later learned that the rampage was perpetrated by one man, John Allen Muhammad, and one minor, Lee Boyd Malvo, driving a blue 1990 Chevrolet Caprice sedan, and had apparently begun the month before with murders and robbery in Louisiana and Alabama, which had resulted in three deaths."

THELADY -> RE: master class for terrorists (7/8/2010 11:05:05 AM)

the nanny state,

I just watched a report on sugar sodas being banned from govt buildings...

govt employees, with govt health care.
the govt has the right to tell its employees how they will eat drink, no smoking, next they will instute an exercise policy.

the nanny state the govt takes care of u from cradle to grave....

was it senator clinton or obama (or both) suggesting a 'baby bond' ...

so the govt starts ya off with savings, educates u, gives u a job with health care, ur retirement....cradle to grave nanny state.

Yep. If we're opening that can of worms, I'm sure everybody remembers how nobody except the gun toting drop outs in trenchcoats got shot at Columbine.
Hell, even that business at Texas University in the '60s, nobody tried to shoot at the sniper until the Police arrived, did they? You'd have thought with all those tooled up open carry evangelists who make a big deal about coming from Texas, one of them might have managed to screw up the nerve to make an attempt.
